To save govt, Kumaraswamy reaches out to dissidents

Bengaluru, May 28: Ahead of the crucial Congress legislature party (CLP) meeting on May 29 and in a desperate bid to save his government from falling, Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday met the confidante of dissident Congress leader Ramesh Jarkiholi, Mahesh Kumatalli, who is also an MLA of the party.

Kumaraswamy's efforts to pacify the rebels came on a day when former Congress MLA KN Rajanna struck a discordant note saying the coalition government will "collapse after June 10". Rajanna also blamed the defeat of CM's father and JD(S) leader HD Deve Gowda in Tumakuru on deputy CM and Congress leader G Parameshwara. The deputy CM hails from the Tumakuru district. CLP leader Siddaramaiah is already holding talks with Congress rebels who are being wooed by BJP. Kumaraswamy joined the peace moves as a major grievance of Congress MLAs is the inaccessibility of the JD(S) leader. At the CLP meeting on Wednesday, Congress leaders do not rule out the possibility of some MLAs demanding an end to the coalition with JD(S), which they feel did more harm than good to the party.

Kumaraswamy is all set to fill the three vacancies in his cabinet to accommodate disgruntled MLAs, especially Ramesh. The expansion could take place this week if all goes well in the coalition.

Mangaluru, Apr 25: The coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today reported another covid-19 case. With this the total number of coronavirus positive case in the district rose to 18 including two deaths. 

The health and family welfare department in its bulletin today announced that a 33-year-old woman from Bantwal tested positive for coronavirus. She is undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital which is now converted into covid-19 hospital. 

She is the daughter of 67-year-old woman from Bantwal who was tested positive for the deadly disease last week. Both are the neighbours of the two women from Bantwal who died of covid-19 recently.

Udupi, Aug 6: Three people including police personnel entered a well and rescued an elderly woman who had accidentally fallen into Udupi on Thursday.

A police sub-inspector and two others got down into a well and rescued the elderly woman, who accidentally fell into well at near her home at Kukkikatte.

The locals immediately alerted to police and fire and rescue personal.

Udupi town police sub-inspector Sadashiva Govroji, fire and rescue staff Vinayaka and a local Auto-driver Rajesh Nayak got into the well and brought the woman out safely.

Bengaluru, May 5: A 62-year-old woman from Vijayapura succumbed to coronavirus infection on Tuesday, taking the COVID-19 death toll in Karnataka to 28, a health official said.

The state has registered eight more COVID-19 cases in the past 19 hours, increasing the count of such cases to 659, the official added.

"Positive case 640, 62-year-old female resident of Vijayapura died on Tuesday due to cardiac arrest," the health official said.

Admitted to a designated hospital''s ICU on Sunday, the woman was also suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Bronchial Asthma (BA) and complained of breathlessness.

Among the eight fresh cases that emerged in the state, four were contacts of earlier cases, two with Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and one with travel history to Uttarakhand.

The health department is also tracing the contact history of a 30-year-old woman from Bengaluru Urban.

Incidentally, no new cases emerged from Davangere as 22 cases rocked the district on Monday.

Among the new cases, Bengaluru Urban contributed 3, followed by Bagalkote, 2, Ballari, Dakshina Kannada and Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada, 1 each.

Of the new cases, six are men and two women.
