Mangaluru, Oct 9: Expressing concern over prevalent drug menace in coastal Karnataka, Indian Youth Congress has urged the Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) Hemant Nimbalkar to take appropriate steps to save the youth from the menace and control illegalities at skill games and massage parlours.

Headed by KPCC general secretary P V Mohan, a delegation of the Dakshina Kannada district of Indian Youth Congress on Monday called on Nimbalkar and drew his attention to recent murder at Mukkacheri wherein investigators suspect the hand of drug mafia.

Later speaking to media persons, Mr Mohan said that the cops should conduct a separate probe of all drug related crimes in Dakshina Kannada. “The district has been hearing about instances of drugs since 2005,” he said.

"Police are doing their bit to crack down on drug menace, but this will not stop unless the kingpins are brought to book and the drug supply route choked," he said.

Since the Mangaluru region including Manipal in adjoining Udupi district is home to a big number of foreign students, it is imperative that policing units of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Mangaluru City keep a close tab on these students influencing the local sale of exotic and designer drugs, he said.

"It is no longer the ganja that students are getting hooked on to, but instances of students using cocaine and even designer and synthetic drugs such as LSD is on the rise," he noted.

He also urged the state government to bring in strict legislation that prevents use of skill game and massage parlours for illegal activities on lines of a stringent act adopted in neighboring Maharashtra.

"We need to plug all legal loopholes that allow such places to carry out illegal trade under the garb of a legitimate business," he said adding only such a move will stop owners of such business from getting legal relief every time that the authorities strive to crack down on them.
