SC judge recuses from hearing BSY case

New Delhi, Feb 6: A Supreme Court judge on Monday recused from hearing a plea challenging quashing of sanction for prosecution to ex-Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in land scam cases.

Justice J Chelameswar, while presiding over the bench, also comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, withdrew himself from considering the pleas filed by Sirajin Basha and the Karnataka government. "List the matters before the bench of which one of us (Justice J Chelameswar) is not a member," the court ordered.Notably, Justice Chelameswar-led bench had heard the matter on a number of dates since December 16, 2015.

The petitioner has challenged the November 24, 2015 order of the Karnataka HC that had quashed the sanction granted by the previous governor Hansraj Bharadwaj for the prosecution of Yeddyurappa.

The high court had cited "uneasy relationship" between Yeddyurappa and the then governor Bharadwaj and set aside the January 21, 2011 sanction. It had also noted that the governor did not advert to the advice of the Council of Ministers in granting permission for prosecution of the senior BJP leader in five cases of land denotification. Subsequently, present governor Vajubhai Vala had also on December 4, 2015 declined sanction for prosecution of Yeddyurappa. The government has also filed SLP to challenge the relief granted to the BJP leader.

New Delhi, Jul 3: The aviation regulator DGCA said on Friday it was extending the suspension of scheduled international passenger flights in the country till July 31 but added that some international scheduled services on selected routes may be permitted on a case to case basis.

Scheduled international passenger flights were suspended in India on March 23 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Modifying its June 26 circular that stated that scheduled international passenger flights will remain suspended till July 15, 2020, the regulator stated on Friday it has decided to extend the deadline to July 31, 2020.

However, international scheduled flights may be allowed on selected routes by the competent authority on a case to case basis,” said the circular by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Air India and other private domestic airlines have been operating unscheduled international repatriation flights under the Vande Bharat Mission, which was started on May 6 by the Central government.

India resumed scheduled domestic passenger flights on May 25, after a gap of two months.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: The Karnataka government on Monday decided to purchase 1,000 ventilators from medical devices company Skanray Technologies and five lakh Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), amid rising COVID-19 cases.

Health Minister B Sriramulu convened a meeting with officials to review the situation in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, and with the Mysuru-based firm through a video conference.

"In the meeting, it was decided to buy 1,000 ventilators immediately", the Minister tweeted.

He said the government has already taken steps to buy ten lakh masks, and decided to purchase five lakh PPE.

"The Health Department has been working on a war- footing to halt the spread of the (COVID-19) infections", Sriramulu tweeted.

The Minister appealed to the citizens to strictly follow social distancing.

Six new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Karnataka on Sunday, taking the total number of infections to the respiratory disease to 26 -- the highest number of positive cases in a single day in the State.

The Karnataka government has announced shutdown of all commercial activities barring essential services in nine districts, where COVID-19 cases have been reported, till March 31.

They are: Bengaluru city, Bengaluru Rural, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, Dharwad, Chikkaballapura, Kodagu and Belagavi, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

Bengaluru, June 19: The throat swabs of a Bengaluru-based Kannada journalist, who passed away on June 18, were tested positive for the covid-19, officials said.

Gauripura Chandru (54), who was one of the sub-editors of Vijaya Karnataka Kannada daily newspaper, had reportedly suffered cardiac arrest.

It is learnt that Chandru wasn’t keeping well for past few days. He collapsed at his home on Thursday afternoon and was immediately rushed to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

A native of Gauripura in Chitradurga district, Chandru had completed graduation in engineering. However, he had chosen journalism as his profession.
