SC notice to BSY on plea against stay on denotification probe

New Delhi, Dec 11: The Supreme Court, on Monday, admitted for consideration a plea made by the Karnataka government against the stay of investigation into the role of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa in de-notifying lands, thereby causing losses to the state exchequer.

A bench of Justices R K Agrawal and Abhay Manohar Sapre issued notice to Yeddyurappa on a special leave petition filed by the Anti Corruption Bureau, Bengaluru city.

The court, however, refused to suspend ex-parte the Karnataka High Court's order of September 22, that had stayed the investigation into the matter.

It also sought a response from the state BJP president within four weeks, on the plea for staying the HC's order and allowing the investigation to go on.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the state government, contended that despite a statutory bar under Section 19(3) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the HC delivered a 120-page interim order to stay the investigation. "The HC has accepted a specious argument that investigation can be stayed," he submitted.

In its special leave petition filed by advocate Joseph Aristotle, the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Bengaluru city contended that Yeddyurappa as chief minister in 2008 had ordered for dropping of 257 acres of land from notification at the instance of land owners and after having allegedly received monetary considerations. The government, at that point of time, had decided to acquire 3,546 acres of land for the formation of Dr K Shivarama Karanth layout in Bengaluru, comprising lands from 17 villages.

"The then chief minister had misused his office to order deletion of those tracts of land from notification, even though the BDA commissioner had indicated that such lands formed the centre of the proposed layout," it stated.

The ACB had lodged two FIRs against Yeddyurappa and five others in August this year on a complaint by social activist Dr Ayappa Dorey for the offences of cheating, criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and others under the Prevention of Corruption Act, after conducting preliminary inquiry. Following a notice issued to Yeddyurappa for joining investigation by the ACB, he approached the HC, which stayed the investigation till further orders.

Tumakuru, Feb 5: Former Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde has questioned the integrity of the B S Yediyurappa led BJP government as it has not taken an action to abolish the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) to re-establish the Lokayukta in Karnataka.

Speaking after felicitating the retired scientist of NASA Gopal Iyengar at the Karnataka Public School at Kadaba in Gubbi taluk he reminded that the BJP had promised to establish the Lokayukta.

"No party will like to strengthen the Lokayukta and now BSY is also tightlipped and even put an end by appreciating that ACB has been doing a good job", he regretted.

In fact, the Lokayakuta had the power to prosecute even the top brass of officials and now the ACB cannot without the government's permission, he clarified.

He denied any remarks on the CAA and NRC but observed that the youths of the country have been misguided by the politicians as they lost their focus on education by involving in protest rallies.

"I suggest they to straight away take a political plunge instead of getting misused at the hands of the politicians with selfish motives", he said.

Bengaluru, Jul 12: KCTET 2020: Attention candidates, the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister has confirmed the exam dates for Karnataka Common Entrance Test, KCET 2020.

As per information, KCET 2020 will be held between July 30 and July 31.

Karnataka Common Entrance Test or KCET is an examination which is held for admission to BTech courses in the state’s institutes.

The Higher Education Minister C N Ashwathnarayan, took to twitter to confirm the KCET dates. The Minister tweeted:

“The K-CET 2020 examinations will be held on the decided dates of July 30 & July 31. All the best to all the students!”

Details regarding KCET exam centers, time, and schedule will be mentioned in the admit card. Candidates can download their admit card fro the official website of KEA i.e. cetonline.karnataka.gov.in.

KCET 2020 was earlier scheduled to be held from April 22 to April 24, 2020, however, due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, KEA postponed KCET 2020 exams.

Bengaluru Jul 29: There will be a centralised system in place in Karnataka to classify asymptomatic, symptomatic and mild symptomatic persons and recommend treatment based on the severity of the cases, said Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar on Tuesday here.

"Various existing apps related to COVID-19 will be brought under one platform to get real-time information which will assist in strategising allocation of hospitals/beds to the needy. This will probably remove the delay in bed allocation and treatment which is being faced now. The patients will get all information in one phone call," Dr Sudhakar said.

Sudhakar spoke with a team of experts from the government and Infosys.

Referring to a company by name Step 1, which is providing such services in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, the Minister said that a similar system will be implemented in the state as well.

"This company is having a team of doctors and nurses which is guiding the people whether they need hospital treatment or home isolation after they are tested positive for COVID-19. More than 70 per cent of the positive cases are being asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and are advised to go for home isolation," the minister said.

"The load on the hospitals is reduced and severe cases can be administered proper treatment. Infosys co-ordinates with the government to provide technical support for this system," Dr Sudhakar added.

Earlier during the day, the minister held a video conference with the heads of private medical colleges to review COVID preparedness.
The government has already passed guidelines to allocate 50 per cent of hospital beds for COVID patients.
