SC notice to Karnataka Speaker on disqualified MLAs' plea to contest by-elections

New Delhi, Sept 23: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Karnataka Assembly Speaker on an interim plea of 17 disqualified Congress-JD(S) MLAs, seeking its directions to allow them to contest Assembly bypolls scheduled on October 21 in the state.

A three-judge bench, headed by Justice N V Ramana, sought a response from the Karnataka Assembly Speaker on the former MLAs' petition. "Issue notice to state (Karnataka) Assembly Speaker (respondent) in the case, and we need a reply from him," the bench said.

The court will hear on Wednesday their petition challenging the disqualification and the interim plea seeking its direction to contest the bypolls.

During the course of hearing, senior advocate and former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the disqualified MLAs, pleaded before the court to suspend the bypolls in the constituencies once represented by his clients.

The Election Commission (EC) told the court that the former MLAs can contest the bypolls despite they being disqualified from the Assembly. The by-elections should take place as per schedule, the EC submitted.

"Elections should not be stayed. The state Speaker can disqualify but can't deprive the ex-MLAs from contesting the elections," the commission submitted.

By-elections in Karnataka will take place on October 21 and counting of votes will be held on October 24.

Women lead massive protest demanding liquor ban in Karnataka

Bagalkote, Jan 27: The bank of Krishna River in front of Sangamantha Temple at Koodalasangama in Karnataka today witnessed the launch of women’s indefinite strike demanding liquor ban in the state.

Thousands of women from various parts of Karnataka have taken part in the strike being organised under the banner of 'Karnataka Madya Nisheda Andolana'.

The strike was launched to draw the attention of the state government to press for a complete ban on the sale of liquor across the state.

About 50 various organizations and religious pontiffs have extended their support for the strike. Food is being cooked on the bank of the river for the agitating women.

The women from Chikmagalur, Tumakuru, Raichur and Ballari districts are taking part in it.

Police turns saviour on New Year, convinces runaway college student to return home

Mangaluru, Jan 1: On the first day of 2020, Bajpe Police became somewhat of a Guardian Angel for a college student, who was wandering around the city in the wee hours of Wednesday, convincing and escorting him to his home safely, after coming to know about his residence.

According to Bajpe Police Probationary Sub-Inspector Anita Nikkam and Police Officer Devappa Hosamani, they noticed a youth, hailing from Handelu in Todaru and studying in a college at Moodbidri, wandering at around 0245 hrs.

When asked about his whereabouts, the boy did not respond initially. However, police managed to collect his address and his mother's phone number after half an hour of interrogation.

Udupi: Private bus owners seek DC's nod to resume service

Udupi, May 12: The Coastal Bus Owner’s Association members have approached Deputy Commissioner to permit them to run bus service in the District.

Nearly 80 buses coming under the Coastal Bus Association and they are prepared to run the buses as per the guidelines set by the government. They have also requested RTO officials for permission to operate and are awaiting approval. If the bus service starts operating, many workers like drivers, conductors, cleaners, mechanics will get employment.

Coastal Bus Owners Association President Raghavendra Bhat said that the bus owners must provide services to the public as per regulations set by Deputy Commissioner.
