SC notice to Kejriwal on defamation suit

SC_noticeNew Delhi, Feb 7: Supreme Court Friday issued notice to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on a petition challenging a Delhi High Court order in a defamation case against him.

The Supreme Court also stayed the operation of the high court order that had permitted Kejriwal to approach the lower court for his discharge in the defamation suit filed by Amit Sibal, son of Law Minister Kapil Sibal.

The defamation suit is rooted in a May 15, 2013 press conference in which Kejriwal, while alleging conflict of interest, had said that Amit Sibal had appeared in the Supreme Court for Vodafone while his father was the communications minister. The lower court had issued summons to Kejriwal and others. Kejriwal had moved the high court seeking exemption from appearance as he wanted to be discharged in the matter. The high court had allowed this.

New Delhi, Jul 11: India's COVID-19 case count crossed the eight lakh-mark on Saturday with yet another highest single-day spike of 27,114 new cases in the last 24 hours.

As many as 519 deaths were reported during this period.

The total number of positive cases in the country stands at 8,20,916, including 2,83,407 active cases, 5,15,386 cured/discharged/migrated and 22,123 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

With as many as 2,38,461 COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-affected state, followed by Tamil Nadu (1,30,261) and Delhi (1,09,140).

Meanwhile, 1,13,07,002 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till July 10. Out of these 2,82,511 samples were tested yesterday, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

New Delhi, Aug 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus infection and has been admitted to a hospital. 

Shah took to social media today to inform about his infection. “I have tested positive but my health is fine," he said, adding that he has been hospitalised on the assistance of doctors. 

The Union Home Minister also appealed to those who came into close contact with him in the last few days to get themselves tested for COVID-19.

Srinagar, Apr 4: Two militants were reportedly killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

The security forces launched a cordon and search operation based on intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in Hardmand Guri village in Kulgam, a police spokesperson said.

"This operation based on a credible police input was launched this morning. Two terrorists have been reportedly killed so far," the spokesperson said, adding that the exchange of fire was going on.

Earlier, the police tweeted on its official handle that three militants had been trapped in the cordon. "Same group of #terrorists trapped who killed 3 civilians recently," the police said.
