SC questions need for Kambala ordinance

New Delhi, Nov 18: The Supreme Court has asked the Centre and Karnataka governments how an ordinance allowing Kambala could be issued when the President had returned a Bill on the traditional buffalo sport.

The apex court called the situation "disturbing" and "piquant" with "far-reaching implications" even as the Attorney General KK Venugopal –appearing for the Centre- defended organizing Kambala with strict caveats and ensuring no cruelty to animals.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra questioned Venugopal and Karnataka's Additional Advocate General Devdutt Kamat on the need to issue 'Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Ordinance 2017', which the President had given his assent on July 3.

Hearing a public interest litigation by PETA India challenging the validity of the ordinance, the bench pointed out that a Bill passed on the subject by the Karnataka state legislature and sent for the Presidential assent had been returned.

Kalaburagi, Apr 25: In order to make people aware about the precautionary steps required to be taken in order to contain the spread of coronavirus, Muslim clerics here are making announcements from mosques after 'Azaan' urging people to follow the government guidelines to keep infection at bay.

Speaking to news agency, Ateeq Ur Rahman Ashrafi, All India Imams Council Karnataka's state president, said, "Under our council, there are around 80 mosques and after Azaan we are spreading awareness about COVID-19. I also appeal to other mosques to make such announcements and follow government guidelines."

This year, due to the spread of the virus, Muslim clerics have requested people to offer prayers inside their homes and avoid any kind of social gathering.

The country is under lockdown till May 3. All religious places including mosques have been closed to stop the transmission of the highly contagious virus.

Bengaluru, May 6: Resolving the disparity in payment of stipend to the Resident Doctors across Karnataka, Minister for Medical Education Dr K Sudhakar on Tuesday directed the Medical Education Department to consider the request made by the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) to increase the stipend.

Holding a video conference meeting with the department officials and Vice-Chancellor of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), the Minister instructed the officials to look into the request and submit a detailed proposal pertaining to the increase of stipend.

The Karnataka Resident Doctors Association had submitted a request seeking a hike in the stipend which is due since 2015.

Mangaluru, Mar 24: With four new coronavirus positive cases reported, surveillance against people coming out of their houses and wandering around in public places has been intensified in the coastal city of Mangaluru today.

With today's addition, the total number of positive cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased to five in Mangaluru.

All the four new patients are said to be Keralites. Among them three are undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital and another one in KMC Hospital.

There will be total restriction in place for the public to step out of their houses. Those who are found outside on the streets would be arrested, caution the district authorities.
