School syllabus to be cut by 50%; sports to be mandatory: Union Minister

New Delhi, Aug 7: In a bid to promote sports in the country, Union Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore said on Monday that a games period will be made mandatory in schools after reducing the syllabus by 50% by next year.

“We have come to a stage where sports is not a part of education; it is education. The ministry of education is ensuring that by 2019, the syllabus in schools is reduced by 50% and there will be a sports period on a regular basis,” Rathore said.

Rathore said the ministry is planning several things to make sports more relevant.

“We are also ensuring that the SAI (Sports Authority of India) reduces its manpower by 50% by 2022 so that it can cater to sports and it has a lean body and money is spent on sports.

“This year, we will have 20 specialised sports schools and the government of India will pump in about Rs 7-10 crore each. The idea is to have a very pointed approach so that each school will have only two or three main sports. They will be very focused,” he said.

Delhi: Cong promises unemployment allowance, cashback schemes, 300 units free power

New Delhi, Feb 2: The Congress on Sunday released its manifesto for Delhi polls, promising to implement unemployment allowance of Rs 5,000-7,500 per month and cashback schemes for water and power consumers, if voted to power.

Presenting the manifesto, Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra said the party will provide free power up to 300 unit per month.

The manifesto also committed to spend 25 per cent budget each year on fighting pollution and improving transport facilities.

An unemployment allowance of Rs 5,000 for graduates and Rs 7,500 for post graduates per month will be provided under the Yuva Swabhiman Yojna, he said.

The Congress will launch flagship cashback schemes for power and water supply to benefit consumers saving these resources. The party, if voted to power, will open 100 Indira Canteens to provide subsidised meals at Rs 15, Chopra said.

The Congress will challenge the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the Supreme Court and demand the Centre to withdraw the law. The party will also not implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the existing form of the National Population Register (NPR), if voted to power in Delhi.

India records 704 positive cases of COVID-19 in past 24 hrs

New Delhi, April 6: India recorded the highest number of 704 positive cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

With these new cases, the total number of COVID-19 positive cases in India have now climbed to 4,281.

Total deaths stand at 111 including 28 new deaths. So far, 318 COVID-19 patients have been cured across the country.

New Delhi, Mar 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described British premier Boris Johnson as a "fighter" and hoped he recovers from coronavirus infection.

"Dear PM @BorisJohnson, you're a fighter and you will overcome this challenge as well," Modi tweeted.

He said he prays for his good health and extends best wishes in ensuring a healthy UK.

Johnson said on Friday that he has tested positive for coronavirus after experiencing mild symptoms and is now self-isolating at 10 Downing Street in line with the medical advice.

"I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government's response via video-conference as we fight this virus," he said.
