Udupi, Apr 16: Raeesa Umarabba, a student of S.R. PU College, Hebri, and Swathi, a student of MGM Pre-University College, are the two girls from the coastal district of Udupi who shared third rank in the Science stream with two others in the Karnataka II PUC exams the results of which were announced on Monday. Both of them have obtained 592/600 marks.

Daughter of businessman A Umarabba and homemaker Ruksana, teenage girl Raeesa said that she was delighted about her results as she felt her hard work had paid. She did not take any coaching. “The teachers in my college were ready to guide students any time so there was no need for any coaching,” she said.

Though she wants to become a doctor, she said that what she takes up as a career will depend on the marks she gets in the competitive exams, including the NEET and CET.

“My study hours were flexible. I did not have any set hours for studying,” she said. Her hobbies include painting, drawing, singing and dancing. “I attribute my success to both my parents but especially to my mother, Ruksana, who is my role model and who encouraged me at every step,” she said.

Daughter of Udayashankar Nayak, Manager, Syndicate Bank, Bengaluru, and Girija Bai, a clerk at Upendra Pai Memorial College, Udupi, Swathi wants to become an Engineer in Computer Science. She would prefer to study in either NITK-Surathkal or NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte.

“My elder sister, Shwetha is studying engineering at SMV Institute of Technology and Management in Bantakal. This also made me think of taking up engineering,” she said.

Swathi used to study for about one-and-a-half hours in the beginning of the academic year, which she later increased. Her hobbies include drawing and sketching.

“I attribute my success to my parents, teachers and my hard efforts. My parents supported me and my teachers in the college were always there to guide me,” she said.

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 28: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Public Works Govind Karjol on Tuesday said that he is ready to quit if the post asks him to do so to pave way for smooth expansion of the Cabinet.

Responding to a question from media persons on the issue here, he said he was ready to quit his post any time.

“If the party asks me to resign now, I will send back my official car and return by bus”, he added.

Further, he opined that there should not be efforts to seek a berth in the Cabinet based on caste.

“Putting pressure on the party based on caste is not right. The party will consider those who worked for the party and also take district-wise representation into account while filling up the vacancies”, he added.

Bengaluru, Jun 28: Karnataka Minister for Medical Education Dr K Sudhakar faced criticism by netizens after he shared a TikTok video sent by his daughter and wife, who are currently undergoing treatment in a COVID-19 facility.

TikTok is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based internet technology company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming.

Dr Sudhakar’s father, his wife and daughter who tested positive for Covid-19 has been admitted to a designated facility and in order to make his birthday memorable, his daughter sent him greetings through TikTok video.

When the minister shared the TikTok video, people pointed out that the minister should know better and that he should urge his family to boycott the Chinese video-sharing platform and lead by example.

Many were miffed that a BJP leader put up a TikTok video at a time when tensions are running high between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: Amid rising COVID cases in the past two weeks, the Karnataka government is planning to increase testing capacity to 25,000 samples a day, said a minister.

"Due to increase in cases in the last two weeks, the government is trying to scale up testing to 15,000 to 25,000 samples per day," said Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar.

He said people living in crowded places, sanitation workers, street vendors, healthcare workers, police and other frontline staff would be extensively tested.

"It has also been decided to mandatorily test all those who have symptoms of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI)," he said.

Similarly, all people over 50 with ILI symptoms will be tested.

The health department will also randomly test samples in old containment zones to make sure that the infection is not recurring.

Currently, there are 72 Covid testing labs in the southern state, 41 government operated and 31 private labs.

However, for a few days, the number of Covid tests in the state have plummeted.

On Monday, the health department has tested only 5,362 samples across the state.

Likewise, on Tuesday, only 7,936 samples were tested, diverging from earlier weeks when around 10,000 cases were tested on an average.

In all, 4.57 lakh samples have been tested so far, of which 4.39 lakh have tested negative.
