Sea turns green due to contamination near Karwar

Karwar, Aug 18:  Due to the contamination, the sea water at the Rabindranath Tagore beach here has turned green. According to the ocean biology study centre, the see water has never turned green in the last 10 years.

The local residents and fishermen, startled by the colour of the waves hitting the shore, called up the office of the ocean biology study centre. 

Jagannath N Rathod, chairman of the centre, assistant professor Shivakumar Haragi and their students came to the spot and examined the extent of the water contamination.They took the water samples with them.

Jagannath said the green colour and the stench could be because of the minerals that get mixed with the water due to rainwater and sewage coming into the sea and the subsequent growth of algae.

The experts said there is no danger to the sea creatures due to the contamination and fishermen need not worry. He said steps should be taken to prevent water contamination.

He said they would conduct tests on the water samples at their lab and submit a report on the contaminants in the samples to the deputy commissioner.

Mangaluru, Mar 24: Amidst uncertainty and fear in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, the prices of vegetables and fruits have shot up in the coastal city of Mangaluru.

Fearing complete closure of shops, people arrived at the market to purchase vegetables in large numbers today morning.

Encashing the situation, the traders too increased the prices of vegetables and fruits.

Tomatoes that were sold for Rs 15 to 20 per kg in the last few days were sold at Rs 40 to 60 per kg. 

Long yard beans were sold at Rs 50 per kg while okra fetched Rs 60 per kg in the market. Onions were sold at Rs 40 to Rs 60 per kg.

Owing to rumours, the price of chicken was reduced to Rs 50 per kg. On Monday, it had increased to Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kg.

Bengaluru, Jun 23: Police have nabbed two foreign nationals who were drawing money from ATMs of various banks by using fake ATM cards after collecting details of the card including code while customers used to withdraw money.

Police on Tuesday said that the arrested were identified as Felix Kisiibo (25), Present address Kogilu, Yelahanka, Bengaluru Native address BUGOBERO Village, Khabutoola sub-county, Manafwa District, Uganda and Khairun Abbdulla (32), Present address Kogilu, Yelahanka, Bengaluru Native address House Uzini Zanzibar, Mkele urban, Tanzania.

The duo by inserting Skirmish machine into ATM used to collect details of ATM cardholders, balance and code and then by using fake ATM cards used to withdraw the money without the knowledge of customers.

Mangaluru, Feb 12: As many as 54 house surgeons from Kasturba Medical College (KMC) staged a protest near the casualty of the Wenlock Hospital on Wednesday over over non-payment of monthly stipend.

House surgeons, who have studied MBBS under the government quota, have not received their stipend from last 11 months. They have to get a monthly stipend of Rs 20,000 during their one-year internship at the government hospital.

The protesting house surgeons alleged that their stipends have not been released despite Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s written order dated December 24.
