Section 144 clamped in Mangaluru; social media under scanner

Mangaluru, Nov 13: In the wake of recent untoward incidents in parts of Mangaluru taluk, the police has clamped prohibitory order Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in the limits of city commissionerate.

1commisCity police chief M Chandra Sekhar told media persons that the prohibitory orders that came into force at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Nov 13) will be there till 10 p.m. on Nov 16 throughout the commissionerate.

In fact Dakshina Kannada district administration had clamed prohibitory orders for four days from November 9 to 12 in order to maintain peace during Tipu Jayanti.

However, the city police chief had extended the ban orders under the limits of Ullal and Konate police stations in the wake of stabbing incidents.

Mr Chandra Sekhar, said that he had to expand the orders to the entire commissionerate to thwart the attempt of trouble mongers to disrupt the peace.

“There will be no permission for any public gathering or protest meets during the ban period,” he said adding that the police are keeping an eye on those who distribute pamphlets or share provocative posts on social media.

The top cop clarified that the prohibitory orders will not apply for wedding ceremonies and those who stand in queues in front of banks.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur. 

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman. 

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way. 

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment. 

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.

Mangaluru/Udupi: A total 237 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi on Sunday, a day that DK scaled yet another peak with 196 cases and Udupi tallied 41. 

The grim reaper came calling on patients with co-morbidities, harvesting five souls, to take the total tally of deaths in DK to 46. The spurt also saw DK’s tally of positive cases rise to 2,230 and Udupi’s to 1,608.

The 196 fresh cases in DK included 91 cases of influenza like illness (ILI), the cause of infection in 57 people is yet to be known, 20 are primary contacts, 16 are those with severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), 10 are those with international travel history and two are pre-surgery samples, said deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh. The five deceased include three men and two women, the youngest victim being a 50-year-old man and oldest a 72-year-old man.

A total 94 patients were discharged from the designated Covid-19 and private hospitals in the city, taking the total number those discharged to 876, and paring down the number of active cases to 1,309. The commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation, tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Sunda. Deputy Commissioner (revenue), MCC, a primary contact, has home quarantined himself in the wake of this development.

In neighbouring Udupi, the double-digit blip on the Covid-19 radar included 32 primary contacts, six with inter-district travel history, two with inter-state travel history and one patient with international travel history, said district health officer Sudhir Chandra Sooda. The fresh cases also included four children. The discharge of 28 patients took the total numbers of those discharged to 1,273, and there are 332 active cases now. The district has recorded three deaths due to the pandemic thus far.
