Section 144 extended till June 27 in 4 taluks of DK; bandh in sensitive areas

Mangaluru, Jun 21: The Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be in force across Dakshina Kannada district except Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate limits till June 27.

In the wake of communal clash in Kalladka on June 13, the Deputy Commissioner Dr K J Jagadeesha had clamped Section 144 till June 14 midnight in Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia taluks that fall under the limits of Dakshina Kannada district police. Following consultation with the senior police officers on June 14 he had extended the prohibitory orders from June 14 midnight to June 21 midnight.

However, the murder of an SDPI activist ad Benjanapadavu in Bantwal taluk on Wednesday morning, and other untoward incidents reported from surrounding areas, forced the district administration to extend the ban orders for another week in the district police limits.

In fact Section 144 was clamped in Bantwal taluk on May 27 a day after two Muslim youth were stabbed by miscreants belonging to a saffron outfit in Kalladka. The prohibitory orders were extended four times so far in the taluk.

Bandh in sensitive areas

The murder of SDPI activist by armed miscreants has sparked communal tensions across Bantwal taluk and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district too. As part of precautionary measures police imposed bandh in some communally sensitive areas of the district on Wednesday.

Most of the shops and commercial establishes were shut down in Kalladka, Melkar, BC Road, Kaikamba, Addoor and Farangipet after Wednesday afternoon.

Mangaluru, June 23: G Jagadeesha, deputy commissioner of Udupi, who is heading the magisterial inquiry into the December 19 police firing case in Mangaluru, has sought more time from the government to submit the report.

Two innocent passersby - Nauseen Kudroli (49) and Abdul Jaleel Bengre (23) - were killed when policemen opened fire randomly after caning the alleged anti-CAA protesters in Mangaluru. 

The chief minister B S Yediyurappa led Karnataka state government had commissioned two inquires, one magisterial and the other CID, into the incident. 

“Due to the covid-19 pandemic the probe couldn’t be complete on time. I have asked the government for more time. Two more hearings are to be conducted,” said Mr Jagadeesha, who was expected to submit the report before the government on Tuesday.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: With preparations underway for conducting exams for the final semester/ year students in the state, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan on Monday directed the respective universities to conduct exams for the backlog papers as well.

"In the wake of COVID-19, it has been decided to hold exams only for the students of final semester/year courses. It has come to our notice that some universities have decided against conducting exams for final year students who have a backlog to clear from previous semesters. This is unpardonable," the Deputy Chief Minister said.

"Our intention is to see that the final year students finish their course. In the present situation, conducting only final semester exams won't help. We have to help the students in clearing their backlogs," added Ashwathnarayan, directing all universities to compulsorily conduct these exams.

Meanwhile, Ashwathnarayan thanked the staff and officials of various government departments who were responsible for successfully conducting the CET exams even amidst the difficult situation in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

"In all, 1,94,419 students had registered for the CET exams, of which 1,75,428 wrote the exams. The percentage of students who took up the exams this year was equivalent to that of the previous years, in normal times," the DCM informed.

"After we successfully conducted the exams, Arunachal Pradesh is going to conduct the Public Service Commission exams on the lines of how we successfully conducted the exams. Likewise, even our KPSC has said it will conduct the exams. We must appreciate the good work of the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), which has set an example for others," Ashwathnarayan said.

The deputy chief minister said that 33 colleges in various districts across the state faced shortage of land and that it is the responsibility of the District Commissioners (DCs) to get the lands sanctioned for all these colleges.
In Bagalkot district alone land has not been sanctioned for six degree colleges, he said.

Reacting to this, Bagalkot DC Captain Rajendra assured to look into the matter as soon as he receives the proposal from department officials.

"Similarly, there is shortage of land for five Diploma colleges and 28 ITI colleges in different parts of the state. The DCs must immediately pay attention to this. Once they get the land, buildings will come up within no time," the Karnataka deputy chief minister said.

Udupi, Mar 8: The 75-year old man who was admitted to Udupi District Hospital over suspected Corona Virus infection has tested negative on Saturday.

The reports from Bengaluru Medical College’s laboratory where the samples of the person were sent, confirmed that the aged person was not infected with Corona Virus.

The report was submitted to the District Administration by the laboratory that confirmed that the person was not infected by the viral Corona Virus.
