Sena slams Rahul Gandhi over 'padyatra'

Mumbai, May 5: Shiv Sena today criticised Rahul Gandhi for his 'padyatra' in drought-prone Vidarbha district, saying he should have wiped away tears of farmers when the Congress was in power. The Sena also hit out at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over his Maharashtra Day message, saying that merely being ashamed over farmers' suicides will not solve the problem.

Sena slams "Rahul Gandhi seems to have forgotten that it was his government in Maharashtra and at the Centre in the recent past. Why was financial aid not disbursed among farmers that was sanctioned by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh? He sat with farmers to have snacks and tea. This is even more shameful," Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

"Today you (Gandhi) see the tears of farmers. Why did you not wipe their tears then? What happened to the promises you had made to farmers then. Why did you at that time not ensure that farmers become debt free?" it further questioned.

On Fadnavis's statement, the BJP ally said, "Farmers' suicides are a matter of shame for everybody, but merely giving such speeches won't help. The government has changed but suicides have not stopped. Work towards the problem so that you need not be ashamed next year on Maharashtra Day." The Sena said it is highly "shameful and condemnable" for Haryana Agriculture Minister Om Prakash Dhankar to say that farmers who commit suicide are "cowards". "What is more shameful than farmers committing suicides, are such statements. Distressed farmers are not getting their dues and are burdened with debt. Now, elections are won on 'waves' but the waves have not helped farmers overcome their problems," Sena said.

India sees highest single-day spike of 17,296 COVID-19 cases, tally reaches 4,90,401

New Delhi, Jun 26: With the highest single-day spike of 17,296 COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count reached 4,90,401 on Friday, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

The country also saw 407 deaths in the last 24 hours, which pushed the death toll to 15,301.

The total number of cases includes 1,89,463 active cases, 2,85,637cured/discharged/migrated cases, as per the MoHFW.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of samples tested up to June 25 is 77,76,228; the number of samples tested on 25 June is 2,15,446.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country with 1,47,741 cases. The active cases in the state are 63,357. The number of people cured or discharged stands at 77,453 while the death toll is at 6,931.

Delhi has so far reported 73,780 cases. The active cases in the national capital stood at 26,586. While the cured and discharged numbers stood at 44,765. The death toll in the city is 2,429.

Tamil Nadu has so far reported 70,977. With active cases at 30,067 and the number of cured or discharged at 39,999, while the death toll stood at 911.

Ex-CJI Ranjan Gogoi takes oath as Rajya Sabha MP

New Delhi, Mar 19: Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi took oath as Rajya Sabha MP on Thursday.

Gogoi's wife Rupanjali Gogoi, daughter, and son in law were also present in Parliament.

Congress staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha over Gogoi's membership to the House.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Ravishankar Prasad welcomed Gogoi in the Rajya Sabha.

President Ram Nath Kovind had nominated the former CJI to the Rajya Sabha on March 16.

Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from October 3, 2018, to November 17, 2019.

On November 9, 2019, a five-judge Bench headed by him had delivered the verdict in the long-pending Ramjanmabhoomi case.

Sabarimala Temple set to reopen from June 14 for pooja, festival; Guruvayoor to permit weddings

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 6: The Sabarimala Temple in Kerala is set to reopen from June 14 for devotees for monthly pooja and festival.

The temple will be open for the five-day monthly rituals in the Malayalam month of Midhunom that begins on June 15. From June 19-28 is the Sabarimala festival

A virtual queue system has been put in place in which 200 people will be allowed to register within an hour, Devasom Minister Kadakampally Surendran said.

To avoid crowding, only 50 devotees will be allowed to be present in front of the temple.

Before entering the premises, people will be scanned in Pampa and Sannidhanam. As a precautionary measure, people have been asked to wear mask and sanitation would be carried out at regular intervals.

Notably, no accommodation will be provided to the devotees in Sabarimala.

According to the Devasom Minister the administration has made two slots for the temple visit-- 4 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 11 pm.

Also, the vehicles will only be allowed till Pampa. People coming from other states are required to register at government COVID Jagrata pass registration portal. Moreover, Appam and Arvana will be provided only through online booking.

Also, the devotees coming from other states will have to upload Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) labs certificate as a proof that they have not been infected with the lethal infection.

Also for the Guruvayoor Temple, the district collector, police and temple administration will hold a meeting to decide on the re-opening of the Temple. Here too devotees have to get themselves registered online.

In a single day, 600 people would be allowed to offer prayers at this shrine. Each hour, 150 people will be allowed to enter the premises.

Also, the time slot will be provided to people. In one batch 50 people will be allowed for 15 minutes inside the premises

Not only that, but marriages can also again be solemnised with divine blessings at the Guruvayoor temple. The administration will allow only 60 marriages in a day.

Weddings were stopped at the temple, due to the COVID-19 lockdown that was in place since March 24.

A marriage group should not have more than 10 people, including the bride and the groom and it is mandatory for the group to abide by the social distancing norm.
