Send 10k PhD students each year to US: Narayana Murthy

Bengaluru, Jan 30: Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy has said India and the US should work on an agreement to send 10,000 Indian students to the US to do their PhDs in important areas in STEM (science, technology,

narayanamurthyengineering and math) education, every year over the next 50 years. This, he said, would cost the government approximately $5 billion a year - a small sum considering the benefits it would have in terms of creating lots of innovative solutions that can solve problems across sectors in India.

The agreement, he said, should make it clear that the students would not be given employment in the US once they finish their PhDs and they would have to come back to India and serve here for at least 10 years.

"The US will also benefit from this arrangement. There will be a large number of Indian students working on problems that will add value to US academicians," he said. He also suggested that India issue 10-year multiple-entry visas every year to hundreds of thousands of graduate students from the US. Speaking at the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce Conclave 2020 on Friday in Bengaluru, he said one of the offshoots of this strategy is greater collaboration between the Indian and US academia in developing solutions in emerging areas like the internet of things (IoT), where devices would be talking to each other and talking to your phone. "India has to become a partner in adding value to the US companies by developing advanced software in IoT not just for US companies, but the customers of US companies. This requires us to train our youngsters in adaptive control and handling analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog framework and digital devices. They have to be taught how to write and optimize code since the response time is critical in these applications," he said.Murthy also said one of the areas neglected is opening India to foreign universities. "Even though former PM Manmohan Singh wanted to open India to foreign universities, for some reason, we have not made progress. But it's important that we immediately take steps towards this if we want our grand-children and their children to be in an India which is economically strong," he said.

Mar 4: Twenty-one Italian tourists and three Indian tour operators have been sent to an ITBP quarantine facility in Delhi on Tuesday for suspected coronavirus exposure, official sources said.

Health Ministry sources said these foreigners, 13 women and eight men, were in the same group of which an Italian and his wife have tested positive in Rajasthan capital Jaipur.

“His (Italian in Jaipur) condition is stable,” a source said.

Three Indians, who were accompanying this Italian group as tour operators, have also been sent to the ITBP facility in Chhawla area of south-west Delhi, they said.

All these people, staying at a five-star hotel in south Delhi, have been put in “preventive isolation” at the ITBP camp and their samples will be taken on Wednesday, sources said.

The centre already has 112 people, 76 Indians and 36 foreigners, since February 27 after they were evacuated by an IAF plane from Wuhan in China, the epicentre of the coronavirus.

The first samples of these 112 people had tested negative when reports came in last week.

Sopore, Jul 1: Police rescued a three-year-old boy from getting hit by bullets during a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan and a civilian lost their lives after terrorists fired upon a CRPF patrolling party in Sopore.

Two of the injured CRPF jawans are known to be in critical condition. Three CRPF personnel were also injured in the attack, as per CRPF.

New Delhi, Jun 26: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday said the central government cannot shirk its responsibility of securing our borders with China and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take the nation into confidence on the situation in Ladakh.

In a video message put out as part of the Congress party's campaign to honour the Army personnel who sacrificed their lives in Ladakh, she asked why the country's soldiers were martyred when China has not captured any Indian territory, as claimed by the Prime Minister.

"Today when there is a crisis-like situation at the India-China border, the central government cannot shirk its responsibility (of securing them)," she said in a video message as part of 'SpeakUpForOurJawans' campaign.

"The country wants to know if China has not captured our land in Ladakh, as claimed by the Prime Minister, then why were our 20 soldiers martyred," she asked.

She said while the Prime Minister says there is no intrusion into Indian territory, experts after seeing satellite images talk of the presence of Chinese troops in our territory confirming the intrusions.

"When and how will the Modi government take back from China our land in Ladakh? Is our territorial integrity being violated by China in Ladakh? Will the Prime Minister take the nation in confidence on the situation at the border?" Gandhi asked.

She said the government should give full support and strength to the Army, saying "this will be true patriotism".
