New Delhi, Sept 8: Besides the UPA constituents, the Left Parties and the Trinamool Congress declared they will protest against rising fuel prices; the September 10 ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by the Congress will become another platform of opposition parties to show their strength against the Narendra Modi government.

The Congress has announced the Bharat Bandh against the rising prices of petrol and diesel along with essential commodities, the party accused that the government had increased the excise duty on the crude oil products, which will further escalate the fuel prices.

The main opposition party also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Ministers for their silence on the fuel prices and decline of the Rupee against the Dollar.

The Congress said ‘it is not a call by the Congress party, but the people of the nation’ against the government and requested all the opposition parties to join hands.

While the Left parties announced a separate nationwide Hartal on September 10 against the Modi government, the ruling party of the West Bengal, Trinamool Congress has announced that it will organise street protest across the state and refused a complete shut-down.

The Mamata Banerjee-led state government also directed all employees to be present in office on September 10 and that no leave will be granted.

According to party leader Partha Chatterjee, bandh is a wastage of working hours and acts against the interest of the state.

The Left parties will organise ‘protest hartal’ against the Union government, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said “the exponentially rising prices of petroleum products is having a crippling effect on the livelihood of crores of Indians”.
“In protest against this situation, the Left parties have decided to call for a nationwide hartal on September 10”, the CPI(M) said.

The Opposition party in Tamil Nadu and one of the constituent in the UPA, the DMK has also extended its support.

“DMK will extend complete support to the Bharat Bandh call by the Indian National Congress protesting against the BJP government for steep rise in prices of petrol-diesel. I urge the people and party cadres to make the bandh on 10th Sept a big success”, said DMK leader MK Stalin.

Another UPA partner, NCP, stated that the party will support the bharat bandh.
Congress' alliance partner in Karnataka - Janata Dal (S) also extended its support to the Bharat Bandh.

JD(S) state president AH Vishwanath said the party will stage protests in all districts and state capital on September 10.

Another UPA partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) stated that the party will support the Bharat Bandh.

“NCP appeals everybody for their cooperation and support to make this bandh a grand success”, the party said in a statement.

Rebel JD(U) leader and patron of Loktantrik Janata Dal, Sharad Yadav tweeted, “I appeal all citizens of this country to support Bharat Bandh called on 10 September 2018 against the record hike in the prices of diesel and petrol in the history. Neither this Government passed the benefit of low international prices of oil earlier to the consumers nor reduced the taxes thereon”.

Taking on the Modi government the Congress spoksperson RPN Singh on Friday said 'when rupee was at Rs 60 a dollar during the UPA rule, Mr Modi, who was then the Gujarat Chief Minister, had said that rupee is in hospital. Now, under the rule of the NDA, the price of petrol and LPG prices has hit the highest in 70 years. Also, the Rupee has witnessed a sharp fall against the US Dollar.

Escalating the attack he further said, “if at 60 rupees to a Dollar, the rupee had reached the hospital where has it reached today. Today when the oil prices are hitting the roof and the rupee is at an all time low, there is no statement from the PM or any other BJP leader.'

Meanwhile, first time in the history the price of petrol crossed the Rs 80 mark in the national capital with an increase of 39 paise.

Saturday morning petrol was being sold at Rs 80.38 per litre and diesel price went upto Rs 72.51 per litre with an increase of 0.44 paise per litre, here.

In Mumbai, petrol price reached Rs 87.77 per litre and diesel was sold at Rs 76.98 per litre with the price increasing on the third consecutive day.

Tezpur (Assam), Mar 2: Seven boys, who had appeared for their class 10 board examinations, were apprehended on Sunday for allegedly raping and killing a 12-year-old girl in Assam's Biswanath district, police said.

The girl was hanged from a tree after the crime.

The incident happened on Friday in Chakla village under the jurisdiction of Gohpur police station, they said.

A senior police officer told PTI that the culprits, all of them High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinees, were on the run, but were nabbed by a police team.

The accused after the examination had called the victim to a house on the pretext of organising a party and raped her, the officer said.

It is suspected that the girl was raped on Friday night and then hanged from a tree in a forest near the house, the senior police officer said.

New Delhi, Feb 8: Arvind Kejriwal is set to return as Delhi chief minister and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will virtually sweep the assembly elections, exit polls predicted Saturday.

As polling came to a close at 6 pm, with the Election Commission of India (ECI) projecting a voter turnout at 60.24% (as of 9:50 pm), a poll of polls covering 10 exit polls gave 52 seats to AAP, 17 to the Bharatiya Janata Party and one to the Indian National Congress.

The polls, which are sample surveys conducted among voters exiting polling booths, signalled that the Delhi voter responded to AAP’s campaign that focused on “kaam”, or getting work done.

Kejriwal, a former civil servant and activist who stormed into electoral politics with an anti-corruption campaign in 2013, led a campaign focusing on the development work his government did in Delhi, especially in education and healthcare, as well as sops such as lower electricity bills and free bus rides for women.

The exit polls gave AAP between 47 and 68 seats in the 70-member Assembly.

They predicted an absolute rout for Congress, which ruled Delhi for three terms between 1998 and 2013. The maximum seats to AAP were given by India Today TV-Axis exit poll, which predicted 59-68 seats for the party, while giving 2-11 for the BJP and none to the Congress.

If these figures hold, the results will come as a disappointment for the BJP, which had hoped its sweep in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 would reflect in the assembly polls.

Delhi’s voter turnout saw a sharp fall over the 2015 elections. According to the Election Commission of India, voter turnout till 9 pm was projected at 60.24% — lower than 67.12% in 2015.

Traditionally, a lower voter turnout is read as a vote for the incumbent.

The voter turnout in Delhi has been similar during the Congress regime under Sheila Dikshit, when she won consecutive terms. In 2003, when Delhi voted a second time for the Dikshit government, the voter turnout was 53.42%, and a comparable 57.58% was the turnout in 2008.

Later, in two consecutive elections — 2013 and 2015 — voters turned out in big numbers to vote Dikshit out of power. In 2013, 65.63% of Delhi turned out and the percentage increased further to 67.12% in 2015.

Across constituencies, Matia Mahal in Central Delhi registered the highest voter turnout of 68.36%, whereas Bawana assembly constituency in North district saw the lowest turnout at 41.95%. Among districts, North East district registered the highest (62.75%) voter turnout, while the lowest turnout was recorded in South East district (54.15%), according to the ECI app.

Guwahati, Feb 13: Hours after Assam's updated citizenship data disappeared from the website 'nrcassam.nic.in', an FIR was filed against a former NRC official for allegedly failing to submit the password to the sensitive document before quitting her job.

Talking to news agency on Thursday, NRC state coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma said the complaint against former NRC project officer was filed under Official Secrets Act in Paltan Bazar police station here, as she "did not provide the password to the document, despite written reminders".

"She failed to surrender the password even after tendering her resignation on November 11 last year. She was a contractual employee and no longer authorised to hold the password, after quitting her job. An FIR has been filed against the former NRC project officer on Wednesday for violating the Official Secrets Act," he said.

Sarma also stated that the NRC office had written to her on several occasions for submitting the password, but did not get any response.

"We knew (she had resigned) and, therefore, sent several letters to her for handing over the password. But as she did not respond all these months, we filed a complaint against her yesterday for violating the Official Secrets Act.

"We must know if she has tampered with the sensitive information, after resigning," he added. The NRC state coordinator, however, refuted allegations of "malafide intent" involved in the matter.

"...this (cloud service provided by IT major Wipro) was not renewed by the earlier coordinator. So, the data went offline from December 15 last year. I assumed charge only on December 24," Sarma, who had gone on leave for a weeks after being appointed as the NRC state coordinator, clarified.

He also said that the state coordination committee had discussed the issue in its meeting on January 30 and wrote to Wipro during the first week of February.

"Once Wipro makes the data live, it will be available to the public. We hope that people will be able to access it in the next 2-3 days," Sarma claimed.

Reacting to the development, Wipro had said: "The IT Services Contract was not renewed by the authorities upon its expiry in October, 2019. However, as a gesture of goodwill, the company continued to pay the hosting service fee until January-end, 2020."

In another FIR filed with state criminal investigation department on Wednesday, NGO Assam Public Works (APW) alleged that former NRC Assam coordinator Prateek Hajela tampered with the final NRC list - published on August 31, 2019.

APW member Rajib Deka, in his complaint, accused Hajela of disobeying orders and directions of the Supreme Court, forgery of public register and committed offences under cyber laws for altering or changing public records by misusing his powers and position.

The NGO also said that after publication of the final list, several social networks and sections of the media had reported anomalies, insisting that many 'doubtful' persons were able to insert their names in the final list.

The Centre on Wednesday asserted that NRC data in Assam was safe even though some technical issues have been detected, which would be resolved soon.

Senior journalist-cum-RTI activist Saket Gokhale had sent an application to the NIC, the IT wing of the government, seeking a copy of the contract with Wipro.

"The Assam NRC data suddenly vanishing from the website (& the lack of data security) is incredibly shady. I've filed an RTI with the NIC specifically asking about details of the contract with Wipro, name of the cloud service provider, & all contracts signed for hosting this," he tweeted, while attaching a copy of the RTI application.

Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has also written to the Registrar General of India, requesting him to look into the fiasco urgently.

"It is a mystery as to why the online data should vanish all of a sudden, especially as the process to file appeals was yet to begin, all because of the go-slow attitude adopted by the NRC Authority. There is, therefore, ample scope to suspect that disappearance of online data is a malafide act," he had insisted.
