Mangaluru, Jan 9: The former judge of the Karnataka High Court Vishwanath Shetty said here on Saturday that criminals have joined various outfits and organisations in Dakshina Kannada to “protect themselves.”

But the people of the district should not protect them to maintain peace and communal harmony and instead help police to curb them.

Addressing a gathering at the Shanti Souharda Adalat that was organised by Karnataka Journalists’ Union and Dakshina Kannada district administration, he said: “Suppress the evil. Support the good.”

The adalat had been organised with the intention of finding causes for frequent communal disturbances, “immoral rowdism” in the district and suggesting remedial measures to curb them.

Mr. Shetty warned that if such criminals were not suppressed now they would damage the future generation.

He said that officials, mainly police, face pressure while controlling communal incidents.

In such circumstances people should support police in getting criminals involved in violence arrested and boost the morale of police, he said.

Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar, Khazi of Mangaluru, said that if a Hindus had wholeheartedly welcomed Arab Muslims to India centuries ago.

“Muslims and Hindus are brothers and not enemies. Thousands of Hindus accepted Islam in India after impressed by the character and life style of Muslims,” he said adding that Islam never allows its true followers to indulge in any kind of violence.

Swami Vidyavachaspati Vishwa Santosh Bharati of Barkur said that all religions including Hinduism and Islam advocate peace and harmony. He said that as per the Islamic teachings if a Muslim hurts any other creature, he cannot be a Muslim.

Senior journalist Manohar Prasad suggested the organisers to conduct such adalats or meetings for every two months to review the communal related incidents reported during that period and find out the persons or organisations involved in it and expose them.

Some participants said that transporting cows, “moral policing” and illegal cow slaughter issues were mainly responsible for the frequent communal clashes in the district.

They accused the government of not solving incidents relating to these issues impartially. This in turn resulted in polarisation.

Harikrishna Bantwal, a participant, questioned why police should buckle under the pressures of MLAs and MPs while dealing with incidents relating to communal violence. Police should act impartially while arresting persons involved in communal violence.

“Now there is no pro-people politics. It has become a profession,” Mr. Bantwal alleged.

M.G. Hegde, an activist, said that organisations promoting communal violence can resolve the issues relating to the violence by sitting across the table, themselves. Communal violence was being promoted for political, monetary and selfish reasons, he said.

The adalat passed a resolution that all should support measures being taken to curb communal violence in the district.

They should bring any incidents which could spark communal trouble to the notice of police to take further action.

SHANTHI SAUHARDA ADALAT Organized by the District Administration and Karnataka Journalists Union is a good move and this kind of SAUHARDA ADALAT has to be organized from time to time i.e. at least once in two months to maintain peace, law and order in the District and to build the TRUST & LOVE in between the various communities.

We are all created by ONE GOD irrespective of our color or creed and in fact and it is our duty to promote brotherhood in the Society. People have to cooperate with the POLICE and ADMINISTRATION to suppress the communal hatred and severely punish the culprits.

Dakshina Kannada district was very famous for good reasons and we have to maintain the same image. Together we will not support the people those who try to spoil the image of our district. Due to the hatred and disturbances in the district we lost the incoming INVESTORS in the district and caused CRORES of loss to the district.

We citizens of D.K. District, let us live peacefully and let others to live peaceful. Let us keep up the dignity of all our fellow citizens irrespective of caste, creed or color.

Thanks to the organizers of this meet and please keep up the same trend for the sake of our people and the society.

May God bless.

Bengaluru, Feb 29: Dreaded underworld don Ravi Poojary's lawyer Dilraj has allegedly been kept out of hearing distance and as a mute spectator during interrogation by the police.

"The lawyer is a mute spectator out of hearing distance from the interrogation. He is not privy to what police ask Pujari," a source told media.

As directed by the court and requested by Poojary, Dilraj is allowed to be present near the interrogation for him to consult on legal issues, but the cops have made sure that he does not hear anything for fear of leaking information.

The court has also ordered the interrogation to be video graphed, which the police are carrying out.

Police sources said that Ravi Poojary is relaxed and cool during the multi-lingual interrogation.

"He is cool, giving frank replies. Poojary is exhibiting confidence in whatever he is telling. Maybe confidently lying, police are not new to him," said the source.

According to source, the gangster knows how to handle police, with sufficient knowledge to reveal how much he wants to, when to stop, when to talk, when to mislead and plant false information.

"Poojary is being interrogated in his mother tongue Kannada, Hindi and English. He is fluent in English," the source said.

However, the source denied speculation gaining currency that Poojary requested police not to send him to Mumbai fearing of being eliminated by the henchmen of dreaded underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan.

"Nothing of that sort happened. It doesn't work like that. He has been captured after 25 years, and he is not a king to choose. Wherever the law takes him, he will go there," said the source.

Rajan is serving a life sentence inside a high security cell in Delhi's Tihar jail.

Currently, the probe is focused on Tilknagar Shabnam Developers double murder shootout case. Police are discovering information, verifying it with respect to evidence and building the case.

Taking regular breaks, police are interrogating Poojary from morning till evening.

Of the over 200 cases against Poojary in the southern state, 39 are in Bengaluru, 36 at Mangaluru, 11 in Udupi on the state's west coast and one each at Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kolar and Shivamogga in Malnad.

The other cases are in Mumbai (49) and in Gujarat (75) pertaining to extortion, kidnapping, ransom demand and murder threats.

Poojary also extorted huge amounts from popular Bollywood stars and realtors. He was also involved in an attempt to murder case, aimed at killing a prominent lawyer of Mumbai.

A four-member Karnataka police team led by Pandey brought the 52-year-old underworld don to Bengaluru from Dakar in Senegal via Paris in an Air France scheduled flight during the wee hours and kept him at an interrogation centre in the city's south-east suburb.

Bengaluru, Apr 7: The Karnataka Government indicated today that it is too early to take a call now on lifting the nation-wide lockdown but said it’s in favour of its extension in COVID-19 hotspots in the country by at least an additional two weeks.

“We need to see for another few days before taking final call,” Medical Education Minister Sudhakar K, who is in-charge of all matters related to COVID-19, told news agency Press Trust of India when asked if the State is in favour of the rollback after the 21-day period ends on April 14.

The minister opined that the decision on its withdrawal should be based on the COVID-19 pandemic situation at the time in terms of number of cases and response to the outbreak.

When the lockdown is lifted, it has to be in a staggered and phased manner, and not at one go, Mr Sudhakar stressed.

“Where there are red alerts and zones, those zones, in my opinion, should continue to be in a lockdown situation at least for two weeks…till this month-end, I will request them (the Centre) to do this,” he said.

The Telananga Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend the 21-day national lockdown imposed to contain COVID-19 outbreak beyond April 14, saying it was essential to save lives.

Mr Sudhakar said the Karnataka government is facing financial challenges because of drastic fall in revenues due to the lockdown, adding, it would take “tough decisions” to cut expenditure.

The Finance Department is in the process of evaluating the state’s fiscal position.

“Finance department is gathering information…what is the need now, what should be the overall expenditure, how much we can save; financial support for unorganised and organised sector, along with stimulus to other sectors, we have to see where we stand financially,” the minister said.

“Based on that, we have to take certain steps for sure because after all the government runs on the exchequer money. Once the exchequer is stopped because of lockdown, we are not getting GST, no motor vehicle tax. No tax money is coming.”

Government also has to run right? he said.

He said commitment and obligations with regard to paying interest on loans taken at the national and international level would have to be met.

“So, there are some financial constraints, and financial challenges before the government. The Government will take tough decisions only after studying the entire finance (position of the State).”

The Telangana government last week announced pay cut for government employees.

The Union Cabinet on Monday approved a 30 per cent cut in salaries of all Members of Parliament and a two-year suspension of the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme.

The Bharatiya Janata Party workers belonging to Muslim community are bewildered over the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act. A considerable number of BJP’s Muslim workers have distanced themselves from the pro-CAA meetings being organised by the party in different parts of India.

There is a deep divide within members of the BJP minority wing, with many upset and angry with the party. During its membership drive in 2018 for the minority wing, BJP had enrolled lakhs of Muslims across India.

A senior Muslim member of the saffron party in Hyderabad explained, “We are very upset. There is no one listening to us within the party. Majority of the members are introspecting on their future role in the party. Few are vocal about it. Those, who believe they still have a future in the party, have decided to keep quiet on this issue.”

This is the reason why they are not attending the pro-CAA rallies or interacting with people. If anybody approaches and questions them about CAA, they maintain they have no idea, just like the common man. A member of the BJP belonging to the minority community says they have been hurt by the decision of the government on CAA.

“Shia Muslims in Pakistan are suffering. They have been targeted in that country from time to time. The BJP patronised a large number of Shia Muslims. The Shia community in Uttar Pradesh even sided with the BJP. But what has the community got in the end? The persecuted Shia minorities in Pakistan have not got justice,” the party member from minority community lamented.

There are 400 families belonging to the Shia community in Hyderabad, who have relatives in Karachi and Quetta in Pakistan. These Shias had migrated to Pakistan from the Nizam state after its accession to India. These families were hopeful that after aligning with BJP, there would be a reprieve for them. But the stand taken by BJP has left them in lurch. The CAA provides for granting Indian citizenship only to non-Muslim minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

“We have been left with nothing. Shias have not been politically active in all the three countries of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and have suffered due to this reason. There was some hope in India, but even that has been lost now,” the minority wing leader remarked.

National vice president of BJP minority cell Farid Sheikh Liaquat Ali says, “Party workers and common people are asking the same question.”

I have told them what union home minister Amit Shah has said in Parliament, that CAA is not against Indian Muslims. But people are not convinced. Every meeting or social function that I attend, I find that people are angry and upset. I have been with the BJP for 33 years and whatever I hear from the people is being conveyed to the party.”

The incident that occurred at the madarasa in Uttar Pradesh has led to a pointed question: “If this can happen to Muslims in UP, will it not repeat elsewhere?”
