Shikhar Dhawan, David Warner’s breathtaking knocks help Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Chennai Super Kings by 6 wickets in IPL 2014

May 23, 2014

Hyderabad beat ChennaiRanchi, May 23: Buoyed by one of the best knocks in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 in David Warner‘s stunning 90, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made light weather of a massive target set by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 50th match of the tournament. Warner was ably supported by Shikhar Dhawan at the start where he played a sheet anchor’s role and carried on from all the good of his in-form teammate had put to steer his team to a comfortable six wicket win.

Earlier Chennai Dwayne Smith‘s early blitzkrieg and solid middle order performances by David Hussey and MS Dhoni propelled Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a formidable 185 for three after being asked to bat by Hyderabad on a Ranchi wicket that didn’t show any demons.

After Chennai scored a massive 185 for three after being put into bat by Hyderabad, Warner got the visitors off to a flying start with two hard-hitting boundaries in the first over of Mohit Sharma. The Australian opener spanked the first ball when he was offered width and was trashed on the off-side. The second boundary was down the ground and the fielders had no chance and signs were ominous.

Warner caused further damage off Ravichandran Ashwin’s first over with a huge six over the bowler’s head and repeated the same a few deliveries later. This time the result was a boundary. Mohit continued and some ordinary bowling saw some spanking shots on the off side.

Young Australian cricketer of the year John Hastings came into the attack and Warner went after him as well. First the bowler sprayed on the leg side and ball went to the boundary and more bad balls from Hastings meant more damage and a total of extraordinary five boundaries came of the over. It was a nightmarish start for Hastings in the IPL. Looking uninterested and depleted, Warner was fully capitalising on the lax effort by the home team and the score raced to 64 for none in just six overs.

The spinners were surprisingly poor and Ravindra Jadeja in particular was singled out for some special treatment by Warner and he brought his fifty in just 25 balls. The carnage did not stop there and Warner still found gaps at will and looked poised to score a century. Just then Chennai found an unlikely hero in Hastings when the power-hitting Australian cut the ball onto his stumps. Dhawan took off from where Warner left and went after the slower bowlers. It was apparent that Chennai was missing Ben Hilfenhaus’s presence and even Naman Ojha got on to the act with a huge six. Dhoni’s bowling changes were uninspiring and it could well do with the lack of options available at his disposal. Ojha departed towards the end, trying one big hit too many and Aaron Finch went back to the pavilion of a rather silly run-out.

Looking for the elusive big hit, even skipper Darren Sammy departed after a fine catch at long on by Faf du Plessis and Venugaopal Rao put an end to the stretched nature of proceedings by lofting Jadeja down the ground to inflict Chennai their third consecutive loss.

Brief scores:

Chennai Super Kings 185 for 3 in 20 overs (Dwayne Smith 47, David Hussey 50*, MS Dhoni 57*; Karn Sharma 2 for 19) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 189 for 4 (David Warner 90, Shikhar Dhawan 64*, Naman Ojha 19 ; Suresh Raina 1 for 17) by 6 wickets.

KKR piggyback Uthappa

Robin Uthappa's irrepressible form was extended into an eighth consecutive match as Kolkata Knight Riders became the third team to seal passage to the IPL play-offs, courtesy a 30-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens in game one of Thursday's double-header. Uthappa reeled off his fifth fifty of the season, in the process eclipsing Glenn Maxwell's tally of 533 runs to take the Orange Cap, and was matched by an attacking Shakib Al Hasan who scored a 38-ball 60 in KKR's 191 for 5.

RCB lost Chris Gayle early again and were always behind a rising asking rate, and once Sunil Narine struck twice in the 13th over the match was officially over as a contest. It was KKR's sixth win on the trot and they now have 16 points, same as Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings. Defeat has signalled the end of the road for RCB, leaving one of Rajasthan Royals (14), Sunrisers Hyderabad (10) and Mumbai Indians (10) to claim the fourth and final play-off spot open.

KKR winning has become equated with runs from Uthappa's bat and this was another excellent innings from the in-form opener. He had to bide his time initially while shelving his eye-catching strokes after RCB nipped out Gautam Gambhir and Manish Pandey inside four overs and Yusuf Pathan ran himself out needlessly after clattering two quick sixes.

He crawled to 13 off 13 balls during the Powerplay and didn't hit a boundary until the eighth over, but that lofted drive off Yuzvendra Chahal gave Uthappa the confidence to play his shots. In the following seven balls faced he hit three fours and a six, moving into the forties for the eighth time in a row. The Orange Cap came his way with a deft steer to third man for four and a half-century came moments later.

Uthappa found the required support from Shakib with whom he put on 121 in 70 balls. Shakib was strongest when hitting down the ground and didn't shy away from attacking RCB's spinners, especially Chahal who he clouted for three sixes and a four in the 15th over. Shakib's first half-century in the IPL needed just 32 deliveries. Uthappa finished 83 not out off 51 balls, his best score of the season. RCB's three-pronged spin attack conceded 90 in eight overs.

KKR had twice previously successfully defended scores in excess of 190 against RCB and Thursday became the hat-trick. Needing to chase at 9.85 per over before a ball was bowled, RCB weren't helped by another poor show from Gayle who was lbw to Umesh Yadav in the second over. Takawale and Virat Kohli put on 85 in 10.3 overs with a mixture of sweetly-timed shots (Kohli) and hard-handed drags and swipes (Takawale) but neither really threatened to impose himself. With the required rate having crossed 12, a double-strike from Narine removed the two set batsmen.

Kohli failed to keep down a cut and was well held by Morne Morkel at backward point for 38 from 31 balls, and then Takawale chopped onto his stumps for 45 off 36. From 90 for 1 in 12 overs, RCB were 93 with the asking rate 14.71 and two new batsmen at the crease. Hardly the situation anyone would want to walk out too in a must-win match, and Yuvraj Singh and AB de Villiers perished to Narine in the 17th over, giving the spinner excellent figures of 4 for 20. There was nothing left in RCB's tank.

Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 195 for 5 in 20 overs (Robin Uthappa 83*, Shakib Al Hasan 60) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 165 for 5 in 20 overs (Yogesh Takawale 45, Sunil Narine 4/20) by 30 runs

Indore, Jan 8:  India skipper Virat Kohli has added yet another feather to his cap by becoming the fastest player to score 1,000 runs in T20I cricket as a captain. Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 30 during India''s seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series on Tuesday evening.

Kohli achieved the milestone of scoring 1,000 runs as captain in his 30th T20I inning. He is the second Indian and sixth overall after MS Dhoni to have achieved the feat. Dhoni had scored 1112 runs in 62 T20I games as captain.

Faf du Plessis (1273 runs from 40 games), Kane Williamson (1083 runs in 39 games), Eoin Morgan (1013 runs in 43 games) and Ireland''s William Porterfield (1002 runs in 56 games) are other captains on the list.

During India''s emphatic victory at the Holkar Stadium, Kohli also surpassed team-mate Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the series, as the top run-getter in the T20Is. Kohli now has 2663 runs from 71 innings.

Both had finished 2019 as joint top-scorers in T20Is, with 2633 runs each.

India, already with an unassailable lead of 1-0 in the series, will now face Sri Lanka in the final T20I on Friday in Pune. The first match between the two teams was called off without a ball being bowled due to wet patches on the pitch in Guwahati last Sunday.

Dubai, Jul 19: On hold for the past two months, the fate of this year's T20 World Cup will be up for a decisive round of deliberation when the ICC board meets virtually on Monday with the BCCI hoping for a postponement to ensure that the IPL can go ahead.

The global event is supposed to be held from October 18 to November 15 in Australia but the country's cricket board had, in May itself, expressed its inability to host amid a second surge of Covid-19 cases in the state of Victoria.

With India's case load also exceeding the 10 lakh mark, including more than 26,000 deaths, the IPL, if it is held, is likely to move to the UAE once the central government gives its go ahead.

"The first step was postponement of Asia Cup, which has happened. We can only start to move ahead with our plans after the ICC announces the postponement. They have been sitting on the decision even after Cricket Australia said that they are not too keen on hosting the event," a BCCI Apex Council member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

This year's T20 World Cup will likely be held in Australia in 2022 as India doesn't want to swap its 2021 hosting rights with Cricket Australia as of now.

That Australia won't be hosting the mega event was clear after the cricket board told its players to prepare for a white-ball series against England scheduled for late September.

CA has even announced a 26-strong preliminary squad for that tour.

The ICC, on its part, has maintained that it wants to explore all possible "contingency" options before taking a call of such immense magnitude. And it is not unusual for the governing body to wait this long.

"Pakistan was supposed to host the Champions Trophy in 2009. After the terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus, everyone in their proper senses knew that PCB will never host a big event in distant future," said a source familiar with the functioning of the ICC.

"Yet, ICC deputed its employees in Pakistan for months when South Africa was already preparing to host the event. Everyone knew but a formal announcement of shift took months as threat assessment was part of protocol.

"The ICC couldn't have just postponed 9the T20 World Cup) immediately as initially, the top ministers of the Australian government expressed keenness to host," he added.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has also resigned itself to this outcome after vehemently opposing the Indian board.

The postponement of Asia Cup, which was supposed to be hosted by the PCB, to 2021 was a big blow to Ehsan Mani and his team.

"We have had a lot of discussions and the feeling is it (T20 World Cup) would not be possible this year. ICC has World Cups lined up in 2021 and 2023 so we have a gap year where we can adjust this event," Mani had recently said while talking to reporters in his country.

It has been learnt that PCB is contacting other boards in the hope of finalising some bilateral engagements as the national team has nothing lined up after its England tour.

Nomination process for Chairman's election:

The other issue that is likely to come up for discussion in Monday's meeting is the nomination process for the next independent chairman of the ICC after Shashank Manohar's resignation earlier this month.

It is learnt that there is no consensus on what should be the criteria in case multiple candidates join the fray.

"The board is not united on whether the usual 2/3rd majority to decide will be used (as its in case of policy decision) or the case of simple majority among the 17 board members," an ICC Board member said.

England and Wales Cricket Board's Colin Graves was considered the top contender with BCCI president Sourav Ganguly's name also being floated.

Ganguly's candidature will certainly depend on whether the Supreme Court waives off the cooling off period and allows him to continue as BCCI president beyond July 27 when he completes six years as an office-bearer in the Indian Board's state and national units.

When asked about the possibility of taking up the ICC job in a recent interview, the 48-year-old said he is young and and in no hurry for the position.

New Zealand's Gregor Barclay, Hong Kong's Imran Khawaja, who is currently the interim chairman, are also being talked about as potential candidates.

New Delhi, Feb 5: IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has denied any financial dealings with the controversial Rose Valley Group except for it being a sponsor of the side's official jerseys in 2012 and 2013.

KKR issued the clarification after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached Rose Valley's assets worth over Rs 70 crore on Monday. The attached assets include Rs 11.87 crore bank deposits of Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd, that owns KKR, in connection with a money laundering probe.

The franchise said it hopes for the matter to be resolved expeditiously.

"Rose Valley Hotels was one of KKR's IPL jersey sponsors for IPL seasons 2012 and 2013. Rose Valley had paid KKR an approx. amount of Rs 11.87 crore as sponsorship fees," KKR CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement.

"KKR had no other dealings with the Rose Valley Group including Rose Valley’s micro finance business," he added.

The statement added that in July last year, KRSPL (Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd), received a "witness summon" from the ED in connection with an investigation relating to the Rose Valley Group, particularly its micro finance business.

"The ED continues the investigation of Rose Valley. KKR continues to cooperate with the authorities in all respects," Mysore said.

"As part of the investigative process, sometime in October 2019, the ED placed a lien on the said amount earlier paid by Rose Valley to KKR," he asserted.

The directors of KRSPL include Shah Rukh Khan's wife Gauri Khan, actor Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta, Mysore and two others.

Mysore was questioned in this case by ED's Kolkata office in October last year.

Apart from KRSPL, the ED attached properties of two other entities -- Multiple Resorts Pvt. Ltd. and Kolkata's St Xavier's College on Monday.

The ED registered an FIR against the Rose Valley group, its chairman Gautam Kundu and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in 2014.

Kundu was arrested by the agency in Kolkata in 2015 and is in judicial custody at present.

The ED has filed multiple charge sheets in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar courts in this connection and total attachments are now worth Rs 4,750 crore.

The group has been charged by the ED and the CBI with "illegally and fraudulently collecting deposits from public with the intention to cheat them by falsely promising high returns on their investment", thereby perpetrating a ponzi-like fraud.
