Udupi, Jul 19: Sri Lakshmivara Teertha Swami, the chief pontiff of Shiroor Mutt, one of the prestigious Ashta (eight) Mutts, breathed his last today morning at a private hospital, here.

The 55-year-old was the 30th pontiff of the mutt. He was initiated at the age of 8 years in June 1971.

It is learnt that was admitted to KMC Hospital in Manipal yesterday following food poisoning and his condition was said to be serious. His followers suspect that it might be a case of murder.

The seer had faced the wrath of many swamijis after a video wherein he was seen speaking about corruption, immoral activities and murder in the mutt went viral. However, the seer had called it a fake video. In March, an emergency meeting of seers of the Ashta mutts of Udupi decided to take action against Lakshmivara Teertha Seer for his allegations against them.

The seer grabbed attention after he had announced that he would contest as an Independent candidate or from the BJP, if given a ticket, from Udupi Assembly constituency in the recently concluded Karnataka assembly elections. However, he was forced to withdraw his nomination.

The seer was in the news recently over the issue of the idol of presiding deity of his Mutt. He had given the idol to Eshapriya Theertha Swami, junior seer of Admar Mutt, a few months ago, as he fell sick.  After his recovery, Lakshmivara Theertha sought the idol back. But the seers of six of the eight Mutts refused to hand over the idol and asked him to appoint a junior seer instead. But Lakshmivara Theertha did not accept the condition and even threatened to file a criminal case on the issue.

Lakshmivara Theertha ascended the Paryaya peeta for the third time in 2010, after 1978-80 and 1994-96. The seer had a keen interest in swimming, collecting antiques, and playing musical instruments.

Mangaluru, June 21: A local court has held notorious serial killer Cyanide Mohan Kumar guilty in the murder of a 25-year-old woman from Kasargod. This is the 20th and the last case of Cyanide Mohan to be tried in the sixth additional district and sessions court.

According to public prosecutor Jayarama Shetty, the victim was working as a cook in a ladies hostel and got in touch with Mohan Kumar, a teacher. He visited her house thrice and promised to marry her. On July 8, 2009, on the pretext of visiting a temple in Sullia, she left home, never to return.

They had travelled to Bengaluru and three days later, when her family tried to reach her on phone, he told them that she had gone for a bath and that they were married and would be returning back home soon.

The next day Ramakrishna, a constable from Upparpete police station, found a lady lying unconscious outside the bathroom and he immediately rushed her to a local hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. Like in all other cases, after staying in a lodge and having sex with the victim, he took her to the KSRTC bus stand and asked her to consume a cyanide laced tablet, stating it was a contraceptive pill.

He asked her to leave behind the jewellery that she was wearing at the hotel room. An unnatural death report was registered and since none of her relatives had turned up for identification of the body, on July 15,2009 the body was buried.

The moment the Dakshina Kannada district police arrested the serial killer on October 21, 2009 and his pictures were all over the media, the family recognised him and the victim’s younger sister filed a missing complaint. The police had also recovered the victim’s jewellery from the house of Mohan’s second wife and the jeweller from whom he had purchased cyanide had also identified him. Meanwhile, the CID had taken over the case and a charge sheet was filed.

"The report from the Forensic Science Laboratory is crucial in this case as cyanide was found in the victim’s viscera. Mohan over the years has become a legal expert and in this case, he had sought two adjournments," said Jayaram Shetty. Mohan is currently lodged in the Hindalga central jail.

Hubli, April 6: A disinfection tunnel was installed at the entrance of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) market here on Sunday.

The tunnel, installed with the help of Young India.org, sprays people with a small percentage of Sodium hypochlorite solution through nozzles in order to sanitise them before they enter the market.

"It is helpful for all the farmers, vegetable vendors and other people who are coming and going to the APMC market. This is very useful," said Jagdish Shettar, Minister of Large and Medium Scale Industries, Karnataka.

With regards to any plans of more devices being added in the near future, Shettar added: "Firstly, we will have to see what would be the public's reaction and then, later on, we will decide."

President of Confederation of Indian Industry, Hubli VSV Prasad said that the setting up of this tunnel can help curtail the spread of Coronavirus "by disinfecting the bacteria of the body".

While it was on the trial stage right now, Prasad hopes that the trial is successful and the chamber is set up in more public places. With regards to the cost of the tunnel, he said: "The cost is around Rs 1.5 Lac to Rs 2 Lac and hopefully it will come down once we go for production," he added.

Srinivas Joshi, a representative of Young India.org, speaking to news agency said: "We have added 1.8 percent of Sodium hypochlorite solution in 100 litres of water. It is pumped through high-pressure pumps and sprayed like a mist via nozzles for 3-5 seconds which is very less time to cause any kind of allergy."

"People who are allergic to chemicals should avoid going through this chamber. We are putting signboard very soon," he added.

The number of positive cases of coronavirus in the country continues to surge. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is 3,577 with 83 deaths.
