Shiv Sena MLA gets 1 year in jail for assaulting cops

January 7, 2017

Mumbai, Jan 7: Shiv Sena MLA Harshvardhan Jadhav, son-in-law of state BJP chief Raosaheb Danve, was on Friday handed a year-long rigorous imprisonment by a district court in Aurangabad for assaulting police officials at Ellora in January 2011.

harshaDistrict and sessions judge R R Kakani fined Jadhav Rs 5,000 each for the two offences slapped in the case under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty) of the Indian Penal Code.

However, Jadhav was acquitted of four charges under sections 307 (attempt to murder) 354 (outraging modesty of policewomen), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation). Two of his aides—Dilip Bankar and Santosh Jadhav—were acquitted by the court for lack of evidence. Jadhav's sentence was suspended and he was granted him till the pendency of his appeal in the higher court. He paid the penalty of Rs 10,000 and pleaded that he wanted to challenge the verdict, prosecution lawyer Arvind Bagul said.

On January 5, 2011, the Khuldabad police arrested Jadhav and two others following a scuffle after the police stopped him at Ellora. Tight security arrangements had been in place at the world heritage site as then chief minister Prithiviraj Chavan was visiting the area. Jadhav, who represents Kannad in the Aurangabad district, was then an MNS lawmaker.

Jadhav was on his way to Kannad from Aurangabad via Ellora when the police stopped his SUV at 10.30am for security reasons. The chief minister's convoy was moving out of the caves around that time.

The prosecution said that Jadhav broke the police cordon and sped towards the caves. Sub-inspector Suryakant Kokane attempted to stop the vehicle but Jadhav allegedly tried to run him over. The police managed to stop the vehicle. "However, Jadhav came out and kicked Kokane between the legs and slapped him," the prosecution said.

Commenting on the row, district Sena chief Ambadas Jadhav said the party respected the verdict. But he defended the MLA, saying, that "he was only making efforts to highlight people's issues."

Panaji, Feb 23: A MiG-29K aircraft crashed off Goa during a routine training sortie on Sunday morning, the Indian Navy said in a statement.

"The pilot ejected safely and has been recovered. An enquiry into the incident has been ordered," the statement said.

On November 16, a MiG-29K trainer flight had crashed after a bird hit, soon after it took off the Dabolim International airport, which functions out of the Indian Navy base INS Hansa.

Both pilots had managed to safely eject themselves to safety after both the engines of their jet failed.

According to data tabled in the recent budget session of the Goa Assembly, every ten days, at least one aircraft landing or taking off at Goa's Dabolim international airport faces dangers involving birds or stray dogs near the runway.

Noida, Jul 28: A doctor admitted at a private hospital in Noida has been accused of sexually harassing a patient in his isolation ward, where both were undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the police said.

The 20-year-old woman, in her complaint to the police, alleged that the incident took place on Monday and based on that a case was filed at the local expressway police station, they said.

A senior police official said an investigation is underway and there might be lapses on part of the hospital which allegedly admitted a man and a woman in the same isolation ward, in violation of the norms.

The woman and the doctor had tested positive for coronavirus last week, according to officials.

"The woman was in the isolation ward of the private hospital. There was a man, a medical practitioner, who too was infected with coronavirus and was sharing the ward with her," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.

He said the woman alleged molestation and upon being informed, the police immediately lodged a case and initiated a probe into the matter.

"There appears to be some irresponsibility on part of the hospital too. We are communication with the medical departments to check whether the patients were being kept in accordance with the guidelines," Mr Singh said.

He said the accused is still in isolation but the police will reach out for his statement following due protocols of COVID-19.

"All necessary action will be taken as per the truth that will emerge after a thorough investigation," Mr Singh said.
