Bengaluru, Mar 26: Late Union Minister Ananth Kumar’s wife Tejaswini, who was a strong contender for the BJP ticket from Bengaluru South, has expressed shock after the party decided to filed 28-year-old Tejasvi Surya instead of her.

Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, 53, had been recommended for the seat that her husband held till he died last year. Ananth Kumar was a five-time parliamentarian from the seat.

Karnataka BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa, who had recommended her name to his party bosses, told media that she would be the Bangalore South candidate. However, Last night, Tejaswini Ananth Kumar learnt that she had been passed over for Tejasvi Surya.

"It is shocking to (my workers) and even to me. I have been telling myself it is important to show our maturity, that we are a party with a difference," Tejaswini Ananth Kumar said in an interview to a news agency.

“I stand with the party's decision. Let's not start asking questions. If we have to contribute to the country then we have to work for (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi ji," she said.

She referred to defence personnel who worked for the country without bothering about their families.

"(My husband) worked all these years. We always worked with the idea of nation first, party next, self-interest last. Now it is the time to show we always believed in that," Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, an engineer by qualification, said.

Party sources say in the race for Bangalore South, the party preferred Tejasvi Surya because of his sharp oratory. Many in the BJP argue that will be an asset in a constituency that has intricate caste math.

Also, a combined Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress will be a tougher challenge than before. In the high-profile Jayanagar assembly seat in south Bengaluru, which has traditionally voted BJP, the Congress's Sowmya Reddy with the help of JD(S) was able to narrowly win in the state election last year. She defeated the brother of the BJP legislator, Vijay Kumar, who had died while campaigning.

Tejasvi Surya, say BJP leaders, is a young, dynamic face who is known for his strong speeches. He has also a strong association with the BJP's ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Civic authorities have already shifted around 50 Covid-19 patients to Haj Bhavan.

Bengaluru,  Jul 9: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said that he was opposed to a tie-up with Janata Dal-Secular in the last Lok Sabha elections but the party high command did not listen to him.

"I had suggested that we should fight alone (in Lok Sabha elections) because JD-S votes would not have come to us and our votes would not have gone to JD-S," Siddaramaiah told reporters here.

Congress leader said that he was the only one to make the suggestion and he did not get support.

"I was the only one to raise a voice that's why it was not heard by (party) high command and I did not get support. We might have won over seven seats in parliament election if we had fought alone," he said.

After forming government in Karnataka in 2018 with support of JD-S, Congress had fought the 2019 general election in a pre-poll alliance with the party. Congress could only one seat of the 21 it contested and JD-S also won one seat of the seven it contested.

Bengaluru, Jan 10: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday launched 'Sapthapadi', a mass marriage program in Bengaluru.

The state authorities will provide a mangalsutra worth Rs 40,000 and Rs 5,000 to the groom. They will also give Rs 10,000 to the bride after marriage.

The state government has also informed that the department has shortlisted some temples where the mass marriages will be held.

Yediyurappa also confirmed that the government will help communities like Muslim and Christians also to organise mass marriage as per their respective rituals.

According to the state government guidelines, issued last year in November, both parents of the couple should attend the ceremony if the duo wants to avail benefits of this offer but those who want to marry without their parent's permission do not stand a chance here.

Also, those wanting a love marriage will not be able to reap the benefits of the scheme. The plan is to conduct about 1,000 marriages in 90-100 temples.

The couples wanting to tie the knot are expected to register themselves 30 days before the scheduled date in the temple. Following which a list will be prepared.
