Shocking! Upset Mahendra Singh Dhoni to quit international cricket after the ongoing World T20!

April 1, 2014

Apr 1: What was just a rumour till a week back is now almost official: Mahendra Singh Dhoni is extremely upset that his name has been badly sullied by irresponsible rumours about his so-called involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) fixing scandal.

A week back an upset Dhoni had phoned N Srinivasan, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President, about his desire to step down from the captaincy. Dhoni, who enjoys the unqualified support of Srinivasan, heard him patiently. The BCCI chief told him that while he has his full sympathy he cannot afford not to have him as India captain.

Dhoni_quitA source who is close to both Srinivasan and Dhoni revealed that the Indian captain is too well-mannered to instantly oppose an elder who has played such a huge role in his career. Srini had told Dhoni to sleep over the matter and that he would have a different view point in a few days.

Srini was right; Dhoni slept over the matter but decided merely stepping down from the captaincy was not going to solve his miseries. He had to give up international cricket and even playing the IPL. For long he has believed that despite achieving far more than any Indian captain and despite being the most dangerous batsman-wicketkeeper in world cricket, he has been viciously attacked by a section of people. The feedback he got was that these people were targeting him because of Srinivasan, who proximity with Dhoni needs no elaboration.

Dhoni spoke to his wife Sakshi and his business manager and they felt that financially his retirement would not have any adverse effect on him; if anything being free from international cricketing assignments would give lot more free time to tap his commercial value, the way Sachin Tendulkar is doing. Moreover, there is nothing more left to achieve for Dhoni: he has taken India to the pinnacle of success in the World T20 (2007), the Asia Cup (2010), the World Cup triumph (2011) and the Champions Trophy (2013). Besides, he has led India to the No 1 position in Tests and has made Chennai Super Kings a powerhouse, winning both the IPL and the Champions League T20. He has got everything and more a cricketer can aspire. Dhoni, who will be 33 in a few months’ time, wants to go out with his head high.

That Dhoni has made up his mind about his retirement comes from someone who is extremely close to the Indian captain. He has apparently told the team of his decision and the team wants to win the remaining two matches to give their beloved captain a fitting farewell.

Dhoni has requested the BCCI to make the announcement a couple of days after he lands in India, so that he can get time to pack up and leave the country to an undisclosed destination to be away from the media frenzy that will follow once the news becomes public. Quite clearly, Dhoni has a few good years of cricket in him to serve Indian cricket. It’s unfortunate that he has been forced to make a premature exit because of entirely avoidable circumstances.

Potchefstroom, Feb 10: India's under-19 cricket team manager Anil Patel says the ICC has taken a serious view of the aggressive celebrations by Bangladesh players after their World Cup triumph and will be reviewing the footage of the final game's "last few minutes".

Some Bangladeshi players got carried away while celebrating their historic three-wicket win over India in the final on Sunday. While their captain Akbar Ali apologised for the "unfortunate incident", his Indian counterpart Priyam Garg said their reaction was "dirty".

"We don't know what actually happened," Patel told 'ESPNCricinfo' on Sunday.

"Everybody was in a shock, absolutely, but we don't know what happened exactly. The ICC officials are going to watch the footage of the last few minutes and they are going to let us know," he said.

Even when the match was on, the Bangladesh players were overly aggressive while fielding and their lead pacer Shoriful Islam sledged the Indian batsmen after every delivery.

As soon as the match ended, it became tense with Bangladeshi players rushing to the ground and displaying aggressive body language. The two teams nearly came to blows before the situation was defused by the coaching staff and on-field officials.

Patel claimed that match referee Graeme Labrooy met him and expressed regret at what transpired on the field.

"The referee came to me. He was sorry about the incident. He clarified the ICC is going to take very seriously what has happened during the match and the last session. They are going to witness the footage and they will tell us in the morning (Monday)."

New Delhi, Mar 1: Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif on Sunday heaped praise on Ravindra Jadeja after the all-rounder took a spectacular catch on the second day of the Christchurch Test against New Zealand.

Jadeja grabbed a one-handed stunner at deep square leg in the 72nd over to dismiss Neil Wagner, who had to depart after scoring 21 runs.

"Sir Jadeja for a reason! Jadeja Airlines, flying high! Terrific stuff," Kaif tweeted.

In the match, Jadeja also impressed with the ball. The left-handed bowler took two wickets while giving away 22 runs.

On day two, India bundled out New Zealand on 235 runs in the second Test. However, in their second innings, Indian batsmen again struggled to tackle the New Zealand pacers and lost six wickets with a lead of just 97 runs.

India went to stumps at 90/6, with Trent Boult doing the majority of the damage with three wickets.

New Delhi, Mar 12: No foreign player will be available for this year's IPL till April 15 due to visa restrictions imposed by the government to contain the novel coronavirus threat, a top BCCI source told PTI on Thursday, casting fresh doubts on the fate of the event.

"The foreign players who play in the IPL come under the Business Visa category. As per the government's directive, they can't come till April 15," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The government issued fresh advisory with a ban on all existing foreign visas, except a few categories like diplomatic and employment, till April 15 in the wake of new positive cases of novel coronavirus in the country.

India has reported 60 positive cases in the outbreak which has led to over 4,000 deaths globally.

The fate of the IPL itself will be decided on March 14 at the event's Governing Council meeting in Mumbai. "All decisions will be taken by the GC in Mumbai," the source said.

Having the IPL, starting March 29, played in empty stadiums is an option being explored.
