Udupi, Jun 3: Manpower crunch is faced by almost every sector and government departments are no exception. Udupi district has witnessed commendable progress over the last few years and if one looks at the revenue of RTO, then it is easier to imagine the growth that the region has experienced.

ksrtcThe Regional Transport Office, which had  revenue of Rs 3 crore way back in 1984 today has a revenue of Rs 90 crores.  However, the startling fact is that the department earning such huge income has only 8 officials for the district. The number of employees sanctioned by the government about 30 years ago has been faithfully maintained till date, without taking into consideration the quantum jump in revenue and number of vehicles in the region.

The result is that the existing handful of employees has been overtly burden. There are 2.50 lakh vehicles estimated to be plying in the RTO limits here. Large section of these vehicle owners frequent to the RTO for issue of license, renewal of license or various other reasons. Due to scarcity of manpower the vehicle owners are either sent back to return after a few days or they are made to wait in the pipeline for several months. The employees here are undoubtedly unable to handle pressure.

Vacancies

Though the RTO has been given a spacious office at Rajathadri in Manipal, when it comes to number of persons working in the department, the office looks way larger than what was needed.

One of the most important posts, the post of Assistant RTO itself is lying vacant since several years. While a Regional Transport Officer has been working, there are three sanctioned posts for Senior Inspector of Motor Vehicles, out of which only one post has been filled.

There are three posts of Office Superintendents, out of which two are lying vacant. Two posts of second division clerks are yet to be filled. Posts of one stenographer and one typist are vacant. One post of driver is lying vacant.

Density of vehicles

According to data available with the department there are 2,48,875 vehciles registered in Udupi. On an average 50 to 60 two-wheelers are registered every day. Amidst the pressure of performing various responsibilities in the office, the staffs are expected to hold camp every Tuesday at Kundapur and every Thursday at Karkala. Every third Saturday the camp is held at Padubidri where the officials have to be present without fail. Everyday 250-300 applicants for new license are to be tested on various yardsticks by the officials concerned. Due to this three inspectors have to be in Udupi throughout the day. The RTO officials are working 16 hours a day.

Kundapur office

It is said that 60 per cent of the department's income comes from Kundapur taluk. Further, the officials of the department are available here only on Tuesday. Hence the vehicle owners of Kundapur, Byndoor, Kollur and nearby areas have to depend on Udupi invariably. The locals have floated a demand to start a sub office in Kundapur.

New Delhi, Feb 4: "I own my statement," said BJP lawmaker Anant kumar Hedge on Tuesday amid the raging controversy over his remark on Mahatma Gandhi while adding that he has never said anything against the Father of the Nation.

"All related media reports are false. I never said what is being debated over. It is an unnecessary controversy. I own my statement made on February 1, 2020, in Bengaluru. I never made any reference to any political party or Mahatma Gandhi or anybody else, I was just trying to categorise freedom struggle. That's all," Hedge told news agency.

"I am surprised by the discussion around it. What can I say about something that is not there? There is hullabaloo going on without anything. My statement is available in public forum. If anyone wants to see, it is available online and on my website. Show me if I have said anything against Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and any other freedom fighters," he added.

The BJP leader continued: "That programme was about Savarkar. With due respect of all our freedom fighters, I was just discussing our freedom struggle, there is no confusion or any derogatory comment on freedom struggle or fighters. Unnecessary nuisance has been created."

Hedge stoked a controversy after he had attacked Mahatma Gandhi by calling the freedom struggle led by him a "drama" and also questioned as to how "such people" come to be called 'Mahatma' in India.

"None of these so-called leaders was beaten up by the cops even once. Their independence movement was a big drama. It was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an adjustment freedom struggle," he had said.

While several Congress leaders have condemned his remark on the father of the nation, BJP leaders too has distanced themselves from it.

Top leadership in BJP is unhappy with Anantkumar Hegde over his controversial remark on Mahatma Gandhi, party sources had said on Monday, adding that he has been asked to issue an unconditional apology.

Bengaluru, Jan 22: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa has urged the business community to focus on industries that are farmers and job-oriented and promised that his government would provide all the assistance it can in setting up these industries.

“My government will go the extra mile to facilitate industries that help farmers and provide jobs for youths,” Yediyurappa said during a meeting with several investors and entrepreneurs on the first day of the World Economic Forum, which brings global industry players and government representatives face- to-face, in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday.

The chief minister met representatives of 2000 Watt Smart Cities Association, which is represented by sustainability professionals of Nuesch Development, a Swiss Company, and ReNew Power. Both made presentations of their projects to the state delegation.

Yediyurappa appeared impressed by the 2000 Watt’s food processing clusters (development of modern infrastructure and common facilities) projects in rural areas. While presenting their concept, company representatives said they are willing to invest in food clusters, which can provide a better remunerative price for farm produce.

“We will provide all assistance and scientific farming techniques to grow healthy food and market them with added value to the produce,” said Andreas Binkert, scientist and academician, 2000 Watts.

Madhav Bhagwat, CEO of Nuesch Development India, told the Karnataka delegation that the company specialises in carbon-neutral smart township development projects and it has already signed an MoU with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

ReNew Power delegates expressed interest in setting up solar power plants in North Karnataka districts like Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Koppal and Raichur. Samanth Sinha, CEO, ReNew Power, urged the Karnataka government to remove bureaucratic and legal bottlenecks in acquisition of land.

Industries minister Jagadish Shettar and chief secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar among others were present at the meeting.

Yediyurappa and members of the state’s delegation attended US president Donald Trump’s address at the meet. Union minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goel and Union minister of state for shipping Mansukh Mandaviya were also present in the audience.
