Siddaramaiah bats for ST status to Karnataka’s 39 sub-castes of fishermen

Bengaluru, Oct 30: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that his government was keen on including 39 sub-castes of fishermen into the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category.

Addressing a state-level convention of Gangaamatastha (inland fish farmers) in Mandya, Siddaramaiah claimed that twice he had sent proposals to the Centre seeking inclusion of sub-castes of fishermen under the ST category.

“However both the times, the Centre rejected Karnataka’s proposals. Another proposal would be sent to the Centre, after obtaining a research report from the Kannada University, Hampi, shortly,” he said.

The CM said that his government is working on a comprehensive fisheries policy, on the lines of the one in Andhra Pradesh and Haryana, to ensure the development of the fishermen community.

The government is committed to form boards and implement schemes to ensure increase in the income of fishermen as well as to uplift them, he said.

A sum of Rs. 32 crore has been released for the development of the ‘gadduge’ (samadhi) of Ambigara Chowdaiah, a social reformer and vachanakara from the fishermen community, and will allocate Rs. 5 crore for Ambigara Chowdaiah Development Authority, he said.

The Chief Minister said that the government would provide land for construction of educational institutions and hostels for the backward classes across the State.

Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, Housing Minster M. Krishnappa, some MLAs, and zilla panchayat and taluks panchayat members were present. Inland fish farmers from different parts of the State attended the programme.

Bengaluru, Jul 30: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika (BBMP) on Wednesday issued a notice restricting the sacrifice of animals during Bakrid or other religious occasions in certain places.

This year Eid al-Adha or Bakra eid will be celebrated on August 1.

"The administration has prohibited the sacrifice of animals in public roads, footpaths, inside or outside the premises of hospitals/nursing homes, schools and colleges, temples mosques, other religious places or public places," the BBMP said in a public notice.

Person or organisation violating the notice is liable to be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, stated BBMP.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: In the wake of the fears among local people regarding the cremation of coronavirus victims, an understanding has been reached with all stakeholders that the Mangaluru city corporation's crematorium here will be the official funeral site for such cases in future.

Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, who had to face stinging criticism on social media for his alleged support to local people who stopped the cremation of a COVID- 19 victim at Pachanady near here on Thursday, took an active role in finding the solution.

The body of the victim, a woman, had to be taken from Pachanady to Kaikunje during the night, delaying the funeral by hours.

Kamath visited Boloor on Saturday and sought to convince the people that cremating the bodies of coronavirus victims would not endanger their lives in any way as the guidelines of WHO and union health ministry are being strictly followed.

The crematorium at Boloor is run by the MCC and has an electric furnace and firewood pyres.

Kamath said a tacit understanding that final rites of COVID-19 patients inDakshina Kannada will be performed at Boloor has been reached at a meeting with all stakeholders.

Cremating bodies in such a controlled environment is deemed safe as per guidelines, he said.

City Mayor Diwakar, local corporator Jagadish Shetty and MCC assistant commissioner Madan Mohan took part in the meeting.

The decision was conveyed to the DK district administration.

The district administration has also launched a campaign on dead body management protocol to convince the people to ignore misinformation being spread regarding the cremation of coronavirus victims.

Kalaburagi, Mar 16: In the wake of coronavirus scare, the public gatherings including local markets, village fairs, Urs festival in Kalaburagi district have been banned, said B Sharat, Deputy Commissioner, on Sunday.

"Gatherings including local markets, village fairs, Urs festival in the district have been banned as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus until further orders," Sharat said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Europe has become the new 'epicenter' of the global coronavirus pandemic that has infected more than 15 lakh people with over 4,000 deaths globally.
