Siddaramaiah, DKS involved in Rs 417-cr scam: Yeddyurappa

Bengaluru, Oct 21: BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa on Saturday released documents, alleging a Rs 417-crore scam in the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL), where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah serves as the chairman and Energy Minister D K Shivakumar as the vice-chairman.

“This is the biggest loot of public money I have ever seen in my political life,” Yeddyurappa told a press conference here.

In September 2002, KPCL formed a joint venture company with Kolkata-based Eastern Minerals and Trading Agency (EMTA) and was allotted six coal mines at Kiloni, Manoradeep and Baranj in Maharashtra. In August 2014, the Supreme Court cancelled several coal allocations, including the ones made to the KPCL-EMTA joint venture. The apex court levied a fine of Rs 295 per metric tonne of coal that was mined. Accordingly, the additional levy payable was Rs 417 crore.

“The private company was liable to pay Rs 417 crore, but KPCL ended up paying it, although it did not have to,” Yeddyurappa said. “Clearly, there were kickbacks involved. I ask Siddaramaiah, why did you act as an agent of the private company? Will you now resign?”

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee working president Dinesh Gundu Rao has rubbished the allegations.

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar on Sunday hit out at the BJP and RSS for taking out a route march in Ramanagara against the controversial Jesus Christ statue.

“Just because the BJP won 25 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress workers need not lose hope. If the Congress and JD(S) had worked out a better strategy, the BJP would not have won even 10 seats. We will correct our mistakes,” the former Congress minister said.

After the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP has failed to do well in assembly polls and has been losing power in many states. People are hitting the streets protesting against its policies such as CAA and NRC, he said.

Accusing the BJP and RSS of not being able to digest Congress’ victory in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha segment in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he said that the BJP is trying hard to make inroads into the constituency represented by his brother D K Suresh. “Let them take out route march, we don’t care,” he said.

“We all know what the BJP did during the Lok Sabha elections, and the media reported how much money they spent in the elections. What was the Election Commission doing? Was the Income Tax Department sitting with its eyes closed? Why did they conduct raids only in Hassan, Shivamogga and Mandya districts,” he asked.

He alleged that false cases were slapped when him and other leaders, including H D Kumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah, G Parameshwara and Dinesh Gundurao.

New Delhi, May 8: After deadly styrene gas leak in Visakhapatnam, Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister D V Sadananda Gowda urged all public and private chemical makers to exercise caution and care while reopening their plants.

Union Environment Ministry and State Pollution Control Boards have also issued separate directives to all companies to take extreme precaution while restarting their units that remained suspended due to the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country, he said.

There was a gas leak from LG Polymers plant at Visakhapatnam in the early hours on Thursday, causing 10 deaths and hundreds of people getting hospitalised.

"LG Polymers does not come under direct control of our ministry. However, we have asked all public and private chemicals manufacturers to exercise caution and care while reopening their plants," Gowda told PTI.

The minister said his officers are coordinating with the Andhra Pradesh government.

He further said LG Polymers, a multinational chemical company, had kept its unit ready for reopening after one and half month of lockdown. The unit started leaking at around 3.40 am on Thursday due to pressure.

"The toxic gas leak has affected both people and animals. Around 850 people have been hospitalised," Gowda said, adding that measures have been taken to control the situation at the plant site and final updates are awaited.

At present, Indian chemicals market size is about USD 163 billion, which is only three per cent of the global chemical industry of USD 5 trillion, as per the official data.
