New Delhi Jan 16: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and senior Congress leaders may soon embark on a mass contact programme to seek inputs from the electorate on their expectations from the party if voted to power again in the upcoming Assembly elections.

The manifesto-drafting exercise, helmed by senior leader M Veerappa Moily, has by and large been an internal affair involving consultations with party leaders from various regions to understand the aspirations of the people.

On Saturday last, Congress president Rahul Gandhi asked the party leaders to fan out across the state and seek inputs from the people and include them in the party manifesto for the Assembly elections.

The idea was first mooted by the Aam Aadmi Party which had reached out to voters in Delhi ahead of the 2013 Assembly elections seeking their inputs for the manifesto. The fledgling party had also come out with constituency-centric manifesto.

The Congress tried out this concept during the recently concluded Gujarat Assembly elections. Technocrat and Overseas Congress Chairman Sam Pitroda was tasked with drafting the "People's Manifesto" for Gujarat.

Pitroda had held meetings with the residents of five cities – Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Surat to prepare the manifesto covering areas such as healthcare, small and medium enterprises, job creation and environment protection.

For Karnataka, Gandhi has asked the chief minister to involve senior leaders in a similar exercise.

The Congress manifesto is expected to focus on five transformational ideas that would bring about fundamental changes in the economic and social conditions of the people of the state.

Moily had claimed that the Siddaramaiah govenment had fulfilled 98% of the promises made in the Congress manifesto for the 2013 elections.

Bengaluru, May 25: The 36-hour marathon lockdown call given by Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, passed off peacefully with people opting to remain inside their houses and cooperate with the state government to fight against spread of deadly Covid-19.

Though the call was only for 24 hours from 7 am (Sunday) to 7 am (Monday) another 12 hours was added to it as the night curfew was already in force from 7 pm on Saturday and the next day (Sunday) it continued till Monday up to 7 am.

Autorickshaws and bus service were off the road giving a tough time to people arriving from neighbouring places reach home that too during the night. Adding to their woes was heavy rain that lashed the city for more than two hours on Sunday evening flooding the streets.

Karwar: The number of Covid-19 patients in Uttara Kannada district has gone up to 39 with seven more persons from Bhatkal testing positive for the virus on Sunday.

These seven persons include five men and two women. Among them, the youngest is 15 years and the eldest is 60 years. Rest of the patients are 50, 21, 16, 42, and 31 years old, a health bulletin said. All the new seven cases are contacts of the eight persons who were found positive on Saturday.

Of the new cases, one is an auto-rickshaw driver who had reportedly transported one of the patients. Now the administration is collecting the details of the driver’s journeys and the persons who had travelled in his auto-rickshaw. It is said that some of these persons who were confirmed positive on Sunday had travelled to Udupi and moved around in Bhatkal town to buy medicine.

The pressure on the administration is increasing with new positive cases being detected in Bhatkal town every day. After the first 11 cases, there were no new cases for 20 days. However, since Friday, there is sudden spike in the number of new cases in Bhatkal town.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that when COVID-19 has made life and livelihoods difficult, it is unfortunate that charges have been levelled of irregularities in the procurement of COVID-19 equipment.

"The Congress which has levelled charges against the ruling BJP has not so far filed a complaint with any investigating agency. Instead, the Congress has limited itself to getting publicity. On the other hand, the ruling BJP instead of coming clean by ordering a probe into the main charges is indirectly admitting the scam," Kumaraswamy said on Sunday.

"By washing dirty linen in public, both the Congress and the BJP are playing a cruel joke on people instead of protecting their lives," he said.

Hitting out at the BJP, he asked, "Why is it that the BJP is not ordering an investigation into the Rs 2,000 crore Covid 19 corruption charges levelled against the government by the Congress? Why is the government keeping quiet on the corruption charges?"

He said, "Is this the leadership provided by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa? There could be political pressure on seeking resignation of his Ministers. But why has no action been initiated against any officers? Is there any effort to destroy the evidence by retaining officers in their existing postings?"

"Hunger for publicity is evident when we look at the press conference by five Ministers at a time," he said.

The government has countered the charges of the Congress but backtracked on ordering an investigation, he said.

"Would this not give rise to suspicion that the government is involved in the scam?" he asked.

He also asked why Congress leaders have not filed a complaint before any investigating agency despite "possessing documents to prove the charges".

"Are the Congress leaders trying to get publicity or are they concerned about the welfare of the people? The Congress Legislative Party leader is seeking an account (Lekka Kodi) while the BJP president is seeking answers (Uttara Kodi). Is it enough to give such questions and answers?"

Is there a concrete legal plan to deal with the irregularities? he asked.

"Looking at the way the Congress leaders have addressed media conferences and taken to social media campaigns, it appears that they are trying to get publicity," he said.
