Bengaluru, May 23: Municipal Administration and Minorities Affairs Minister Qamarul Islam said that Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka has, over the past three years, allocated Rs. 2,528 crore for minority welfare, as opposed to Rs. 1,145 crore set aside by the previous BJP government during its five-year tenure.

muslimsReleasing a booklet on the achievements of his department in the past three years, in Kalaburgi recently, the Minister said the government has laid more emphasis on education of minorities.

He also said the government has decided to introduce three more schemes for minority welfare — for comprehensive development of minority colonies, for modernisation of madrasas, and for a time-bound capability-building programme for minority students studying in Urdu medium.

He said that Karnataka is the only State in the country to establish exclusive residential schools for minorities. The State has 16 Morarji Desai residential schools and six Navodaya Residential Schools for the minorities.

He said the State's efforts to establish exclusive residential schools for the minorities have received appreciation from the Union government as well.

The Minister said in the first phase, the government had filled up 1,000 posts of teachers, wardens and cooks in these schools, adding that recruitment for another 1,540 posts was under way.

The Minister said there are proposals to establish a few more residential schools.

He also said the State has been a “trendsetter” in extending financial assistance to minority students to pursue higher education abroad, and in the last two years, 50 students have been provided scholarships and financial assistance of up to Rs. 20 lakh.
He said Karnataka also has the highest number of minority hostels — a total of 256. Of these, 132 were established in the past three years, he said.

He said while 45 minority hostels were functioning in their own building, measures have been initiated to identify land and take up construction of their own building for the remaining hostels.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym.

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open.

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health.

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.

Bengaluru, June 23: Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar has urged his party colleagues to be active on social media to counter the propaganda of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to media persons, the KPCC president said that no more than 20 out of the 68 Congress MLAs are active on social media.

“All those MLAs who are doing well need to be projected. We want leaders, not mere followers. They all should be the face of Congress in Karnataka. Party should not depend on just my face or Siddaramaiah’s,” he said.

Shivakumar’s diktat has resulted in the party’s social media unit scrambling to get leaders to create their accounts.

“We’re pressuring all the party MLAs and leaders. We’re asking their personal assistants or gunmen to operate their accounts if they are not savvy with social media,” KPCC social media chief A N Nataraj Gowda said.

He pointed out that the 20 MLAs who are active on social media include U T Khader, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Priyank Kharge, Krishna Byre Gowda among others.

“We’re also trying to get the accounts verified of those who are beginning to get active. For example, it was only recently that we got the accounts of S R Patil and Vijay Singh verified,” Gowda said.

Tapping the full potential of social media is crucial for the Congress because the BJP has found much success in reaching out to voters through various online platforms.

In fact, ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections, the Congress found that there were 10 ministers and some 40 MLAs who had turned a blind eye towards social media.

Shivakumar said he was also working on putting in place a system in the party under which all developments related to the state and country will be communicated to all party leaders at 10 am every day.
