Sidhu likely to join AAP next month

New Delhi, Jul 28:Navjot Singh Sidhu, who quit the Rajya Sabha earlier this month and fired uninterrupted salvos at the BJP for asking him to remain away from Punjab, is likely to join Aam Aadmi Party in the second week of August.sidhu-759

The 52-year-old former cricketer, who had a long innings with the BJP in Punjab, has alleged that the party had asked him to stay away from Punjab to serve "personal interests".

Sources in the AAP said Sidhu will formally join the party next month, possibly in the second week of August. He is likely to be inducted as a "star campaigner" ahead of the assembly polls next year.

AAP is giving a tough fight to the ruling BJP-SAD alliance and Congress in Punjab, and is hoping to cash in on Sidhu's popularity to bolster its chances in the state election.

AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has welcomed Sidhu's decision to quit Rajya Sabha as "brave" and has also called him a "nice" man. Sidhu, however, has not disclosed his plans yet.

Earlier this week, he parried queries during a media interaction on whether he would join AAP, saying he will be standing wherever the interest of Punjab are served.

Sidhu has alleged he was told to remain away from Punjab to "serve personal interests," apparently suggesting that the BJP was acting under ally Shiromani Akali Dal's pressure.

Sidhu has had a running feud with the Akalis, who have accused him of being an "opportunist". They have said that "fugitive" leaders like Sidhu have no place in state politics and people will teach him a lesson. But BJP has maintained that Sidhu has not quit the party yet.

Bengaluru, Mar 24: Underlining the seriousness of the coronavirus, which is spreading like wildfire in Karnataka, renowned Heart Surgeon and founder of Narayana Hrudayalaya Dr Devi Shetty on Tuesday predicted that Karnataka alone will have more than 80,000 people affected with the dreaded killer disease COVID-19 if people fail to protect themselves.

He urged the people to cooperate with the Government in preventing its further spread and immediately treat those who are affected.

Dr Shetty, urging the people to remain indoors and not to venture out, said those who are affected should not come out and remain in isolation even in their houses and take all precautions advised by doctors.

He said if 80,000 people in the state were affected, more than 20,000 need to be admitted to Hospital for treatment.

"More than 2000 affected need to be kept under ventilation and it requires more infrastructure in the hospitals," he said.

Kalaburgi, May 27: Karnataka's Kalaburgi district recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, as per information provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In light of the increasing mercury levels, people here were seen consuming sugarcane juice and cold drinks to beat the heat. Animals and birds could also be seen searching for water for relief from the scorching sun.

Locals of the area requested the district administration to take necessary actions such as spraying water on roads, in order to bring down the temperatures.

"We are facing huge heat waves in this district from the past two days, and even the temperature is around 44 to 45 degrees on a daily basis. So, it is a very alarming situation in Kalaburgi. When we move around the city, we are unable to find water and fresh fruit juice, and even if fresh juice is available, we are afraid of getting infected by COVID-19," said one local.

"If we carry cold water, it gets warm within half an hour, and gets unfit for drinking, and it is tough for us. I request the district administration to look into this matter and do the needful such as spraying water on the roads, etc. for slightest relief," he added.

Mangaluru, June 14: Private schools under the aegis of Association of English Medium Schools in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi urged the State government to reimburse the arrears of the fee related to admission of students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

Speaking to newsmen here on Sunday association president Y. Mohammed Beary said the State government has not cleared the arrears for the last two years. “The 400 private schools in two districts have to get around Rs 2 crore,” he said and added that the overall arrears that the government has to pay to schools in the State are around Rs1,200 crore.

Mr. Beary said arrears have made the school managements like his, who collect annual fees of about Rs 20,000 from a student, hard to function. Due to lockdown from March the schools could not conduct annual examinations and hence they could not collect pending fees from parents.
