Sindhu's Macau win caps best year for Indian badminton: Gopichand

December 1, 2014

GopichandMacau, Dec 1: After successfully defending her title at the Macau Open, India's teen sensation P V Sindhu today said she was happy to win her first title of the year and end the season on a high.

Two-time World Championship bronze medallist, Sindhu outplayed Kim Hyo Min of Korea 21-12 21-17 in the summit clash that lasted 45 minutes at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion.

"It was a good win. She played really well. I knew it won't be easy. She had beaten some good players coming into the finals. The scoreline might say it was a straight game win but it was tough. I am happy I could play my game and I am happy with my performance," Sindhu said.

"It has been a good year for me. I beat some very good players and won some important medals in big events such as World Championship and Asian Games. I will look to work harder and do better next year," she said.

Talking about the losses this year, Sindhu said: "There are some defeats which will always bother you as a player like the loss at Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. At Glasgow, gold medal was for the taking but I could not do it.

"Also at Asian Games, I could have won but I guess that is part and parcel of the game. Good thing is that I came back to do well at the World Championship," she added.

Chief National coach Pullela Gopichand also heaped praise on Sindhu for defending her women's singles title at Macau Open and said it was her consistency which helped her to do well this season.

"It is a good win for Sindhu. She played really well. I think she has been very consistent throughout the year. She beat some good players such as Michelle Li and Busanan (Ongbumrungpan) getting into the finals. The Korean also beat Sun Yu to get into final. More importantly what she showed on court was good. She was sharp," said Gopichand.

"We have seen her play in Korea. She played in the Asian Games. She had beaten P C Thulasi. We knew she is good. She had beaten some good players like (Nichaon) Jindapon. It was a tough match and a good quality match. Both the players played brilliantly," he said. .

Sindhu scripted some historic moments for Indian badminton this year as she became the first Indian to win two back-to-back medals in the World Badminton Championships. She also won the bronze medals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Asian Games at Incheon.

The 19-year-old also won a team bronze at the Uber Cup, which was hosted by India for the first time.

Gopichand said despite the losses Sindhu has shown that she can beat the top Chinese players on a given day.

"Overall, it has been a hectic year with lots of big events and she has shown that she has the cheek to beat the Wang Shixians and Wang Yihans. Every 2-3 months, she had had good results this year and so she has been consistent," he said.

"Of course, there has been some losses but at 19 if she starts winning everything that will be surprising. There has been few ups and downs but the ups have been good and that what matters," said Gopichand.

Asked about the tournaments that she will play next, Gopichand said: "She will next play in Malaysia and India GP Gold. She could not play the China Open as she had cold and she was recovering. So it will be a break for a month. She will be playing a mix of Grand Prix Golds and Super Series, may be 2-3 GP gold and rest super series events."

The former All England Champion, Gopichand said it has been the best year for Indian badminton.

"Over all it is great for Indian badminton. It has been the best year for Indian badminton. The Uber Cup and Asian games medals have been first ever and these are really big and it shows team strength," he said.

"Again by the end of the year, Srikanth beating Lin Dan and then also doing well at the Hong Kong. That is also a great performance. We had three different champions and it is always good to see," Gopichand said.

Vitoria, Jul 20: Lionel Messi won a record seventh top scoring title in the Spanish league after netting twice in Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Alav s in the final round.

Messi ended with 25 goals, four more than Karim Benzema, who did not score in Real Madrid's 2-2 draw at Legan s.

Messi is the first player to finish as the league's top scorer in seven different seasons. He reached the milestone despite missing games because of an injury early in the season. The Argentine's 25 goals came in 33 matches.

Messi was tied with Telmo Zarra with six scoring titles. He has also now equaled Hugo Sanchez's feat of four straight top-scorer trophies.

"Individual achievements are always secondary," Messi said on Sunday.

"I wished it could have come along with the league title."

This is also the third successive season that Messi finished with the most assists 21 in the league.

Ansu Fati, Luis Su rez and Nelson Semedo also scored Sunday for Barcelona, which had already secured second place behind Madrid.

Fati opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Messi added to the lead 10 minutes later and Su rez closed the first-half scoring in the 44th. Semedo got on the board in the 57th and Messi in the 75th to help Barcelona rebound from a 2-1 home loss to Osasuna.

"Today things were different," Messi said.

"The team showed better attitude and commitment. It was an important step forward for us ahead of what's left in the season."

Barcelona now turns its focus to its Aug. 8 home game against Napoli in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The first leg, played before the break, ended 1-1.

Barcelona coach Quique Seti n finished under pressure after the team relinquished a two-point lead over Madrid when the league resumed following the pandemic break. It was four points back before Madrid's match at Legan s.

Barcelona defender Cl ment Lenglet had to be substituted early in the second half because of an apparent muscle injury.

Alav s, sitting in 15th, had already done enough to stay up.

BAR A "B" TEAM

American winger Konrad de la Fuente scored twice as Barcelona's "B" team beat Valladolid B to keep alive its hopes of reaching the second division next season. The victory put Barcelona in the second round of the promotion playoffs.

The 19-year-old De la Fuente, who recently had his contract with Barcelona extended through the 2021-22 season, scored in each half.

May 5: Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar says he is interested in becoming India's bowling coach if there is an offer, asserting that he is capable of grooming "more aggressive, fast and talkative" pacers.

Akhtar expressed his willingness in an interview on social networking app 'Helo'.

Asked if he would like to be associated with the Indian bowling unit in future, he responded in the positive. India's current bowling is Bharat Arun.

"I will definitely. My job is to spread knowledge. What I have learned is knowledge and I will spread it," Akhtar said.

One of the fastest bowlers to have played the game, he added, "I will produce more aggressive, fast and more talkative bowlers than the current ones who will tell-off the batsmen in a way that you will enjoy a lot."

He said he has always wanted to share his knowledge among budding cricketers and that he is looking to produce more aggressive bowlers.

He also added that he would like to "coach" IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, for whom he has played in the cash-rich T20 league's inaugural edition.

The former pacer also spoke about his early interactions with Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar in the 1998 series.

"I had seen him but didn't know how big a name he was in India. In Chennai, I got to know that he was known as a god in India.

"Mind you, he is a very good friend of mine. In 1998, when I bowled as fast as I could, Indian public celebrated with me. I have a big fan following in India," Akhtar said.

New Delhi, Jul 28: 'Your character stood out for me than the number of runs you scored," said India skipper Virat Kohli while explaining his decision to give opening Mayank Agarwal a Test debut in the 2018-19 Australia series.

Mayank Agarwal had made his Test debut against Australia in the third Test of the four-match series.

Playing the third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Agarwal managed to register a half-century in his very first innings in the longest format.

"I had seen you play for RCB, even then you played international bowlers with conviction and you would take them on. You were performing in first-class matches in a dominating way. That is something always stood out with you, I would say your character stood out for me than the number of runs. I knew you would be fearless without having any baggage," Kohli told Mayank Agarwal in a video posted on the official website of BCCI.

In the longest format of the game, Agarwal has managed to score 974 runs from 11 matches at an average of 57.29 with three centuries as an opening batsman.

The Indian skipper also explained as to what makes him notice in a player and added that it is important that guys in the team look to face new challenges and emerge triumphantly.

"For me, the biggest marker is how a person approaches the game, so for example when you opened and we made Vihari open with you. The first opportunity we presented Vihari to open the batting, he said yes to it and that matters me to the most," Kohli said.

"I opened in my first series for India, I said yes to this opportunity and things worked out fine for me. So, a guy who wants to get into tough situations will come out either holding his head high or learning from his mistakes," he added.

Kohli and Mayank would soon be seen in action for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab respectively in the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting from September 19 in the UAE.

The comparisons between Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar keep on growing and many have picked the current Indian skipper to break the records set by Tendulkar.

Tendulkar called time on his career after registering 100 international centuries, while Kohli currently has 70 centuries across all formats.

At present, Kohli is ranked at the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings while he is in the second place in Tests rankings. Kohli has so far played 86 Tests, scoring 7,240 runs with 27 centuries at an average of 53.62.

His knock of 254 against South Africa at Pune in 2019 remains his highest Test score to date. When it comes to ODIs, the current Indian skipper has played 248 matches and has 43 centuries.
