SIT hunting for 2 conspirators in M M Kalburgi assassination

Bengaluru, May 3: The Special Investigation Team probing the killing of rationalist M M Kalburgi is hunting for at least two persons directly involved in the crime, sources in the SIT said Friday.

Kalburgi was shot dead on August 30, 2015 by two motorcycle borne assailants, who entered his house in Dharwad posing as students.

The criminal investigation department was investigating the case.

However, the Supreme Court hearing a petition by Kalburgi's widow Umadevi ordered in February this year that the SIT, which cracked journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh murder case, should investigate this as well as there were similarities between the two killings.

Investigating officer in the SIT, M N Anucheth, refused to divulge any detail except for saying they have startedinvestigation.

While probing the Lankesh murder case, the SIT arrested 16 people belonging to an organised gang of right wing people but two are still at large.

SIT suspects that a few members of the same ring were also involved in Kalburgi's murder.

Two bike-borne assassins shot dead Lankesh, a Left leaning journalist known for her strident anti-Hindutva views, on September 5 2017 evening outside her house in Bengaluru.

According tothe SIT, Parashuram Waghmare was the hitman while Ganesh Miskin rode the bike.

Two other rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare were also killed in a similar way in Maharashtra and investigating agencies suspect that all the cases were interconnected.

SIT officials suspect the involvement of Miskin in Kalburgi's murder.

Waghmare and Miskin are among the arrested.

Bengaluru,  Apr 30: As many as 30 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka from April 29, 5:00 pm to April 30, 5:00 pm, taking the total number of cases to 565, informed the State Health Department on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,718 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 33,050 in the country.

A total of 630 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, as per the latest data provided by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Karnataka and five other states have their coronavirus antibody test kits stuck in China because of the country's new policy of getting clearance from their government before a company exports its products.

Singapore-based Sensing Self Ltd and China’s Wondfo are the only companies that have cleared Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV)’s validation for rapid antibody test kit.

Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and nodal officer for COVID-19 lab testing, Karnataka, said, "Inventory is ready in Hong Kong Airport. Karnataka's consignment is stuck with five other states' consignments: Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Meghalaya. On April 1 or 3, China's policy changed saying any exports going out of China has to be certified by the Chinese government."

Bengaluru, May 31: With places of worship expected to reopen on June 8, the Karnataka State Minorities Commission has released guidelines for mosques and dargahs, that include social distancing, temperature testing and compulsory hand washing.

Abdul Azeem, commission chairman said, "Everyone will have to maintain one-metre distance and carry their prayer mats. They will all be scanned and Farz prayers will be held for 10-15 minutes. Friday prayers should be completed within 20 minutes."

Distribution of tabarukh, shaking hands, and overcrowding inside mosques will not be allowed.  The Muzrai department also issued guidelines for temples, like mandatory face masks, sanitisation of sanctum sanctorum and thermal screening.

In a letter, the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment Department mentioned that while temple authorities and devotees should wear masks, priests, helpers and workers are exempt, in the core area of the temple.

"Devotees should be scanned using infrared thermometers at the temple entrance, and must be given hand sanitiser. The temple trust is expected to bear the expenses," it added.
