Bengaluru, May 30: Four associates of the only suspect to be arrested for the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh have been taken into custody for conspiring to kill rationalist and Kannada writer, K S Bhagawan.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) picked up the four near the Davangere bus station around 10.15 am on May 21 but made the formal arrests only now. It identified them as Sujith Kumar alias Praveen (37), from Kappanahalli near Shikaripur, Shivamogga district; Amol Kale alias Bhaisaab, from Maharashtra; Amit Degwekar alias Pradeep (38) and Manohar Dundappa Yadave alias Manoj (29), both from Ratnapura village, Vijayapura district.

They are close associates of K T Naveen Kumar, who has been arrested for Gauri’s murder. The men are also suspects in that case and will be in police custody for 10 days. The SIT is also hunting for another man named Dada alias Nihal.

How police caught them

SIT sleuths stumbled upon the plot to kill Bhagawan after obtaining Naveen’s call detail record (CDR) while investigating Gauri’s murder. The phone conversations suggested Naveen and Sujith were tasked with the job by right-wing organisations. Sujith went into hiding after police arrested Naveen. But police caught him in Mangaluru, an officer of the SIT said.

Sujith was brought to the Cottonpet police station in Bengaluru and subjected to intense grilling. Spilling the beans on the plot to kill Bhagawan, he said they had bought a pistol and bullets in Belagavi for the purpose and kept them in his grandmother’s home in Davangere. He, however, claimed innocence in Gauri’s killing. He also revealed his accomplices’ visit to Davanagere on May 21 to attend some event. SIT officials took him to Davangere and arrested the three others when they were travelling in a car.

The seizure

The SIT has seized copies of two newspapers from Mangaluru, two black bags, four mobile phone batteries, a map of Bengaluru, four mobile phones, a diary of phone numbers and Rs 22,931 in cash.

Gauri charge sheet today

The SIT is likely to file the charge sheet in the Gauri murder case on Wednesday. The charge sheet will likely mention that K T Naveen Kumar didn’t reveal anything during the interrogation and refused to undergo a narcoanalysis test after initially agreeing to it. In short, the investigation has reached a dead end.

Bengaluru, June 27: In the wake of mounting covid-19 cases across Karnataka, the state government has decided to extend the night curfew hours and to re-impose Sunday lockdown.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa held an emergency meeting on Saturday with the state's top officials to discuss measures to further contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

During the meeting, it was decided that a state-wide lockdown will be imposed on each Sunday starting July 5. Only essential services and supplies will be allowed on Sundays.

Timings of the night curfew have also been revised to 8 PM - 5 AM from the earlier 9 PM - 5 AM. “We have decided to impose a curfew starting Monday, June 29, from 8 pm to 5 am every day. Right now, the curfew timing is 9 pm to 5 am, but it’ll be advanced by an hour to 8 pm,” said Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai

Commissioner of Bengaluru's civic body, BBMP has been directed to set up more wholesale vegetable markets to deter large crowds.

Meanwhile, government offices in Karnataka will open only five days a week and the weekend will be off for government employees.

It was also decided during the meeting on Saturday that a centralized bed-allocation system for Covid-19 patients will be taken up to ensure that each patient gets a bed without overwhelming the healthcare infrastructure.

Yediyurappa has also instructed officials to increase the number of ambulances for Covid-19 patients to 250 apart from arranging separate vehicles to carry mortal remains of victims. The police control room will aid officials in identifying the location and easing the movement of ambulances.

Information about nodal officers working for COVID management will be published. Joint Commissioners of 8 regions will be given additional responsibilities and KAS officers will be appointed to assist them.

The services of 180 ESI doctors appointed by the Labour Department will also be relied on by the state government. CM Yediyurappa has also asked officials to reserve wedding halls, hostels and other institutions in Bengaluru as COVID Care Centres.

Bengaluru Urban DC, on the other hand, was instructed to identify more places for the last rites of patients and also to form more teams for this purpose.

The BBMP Commissioner has been told to notify reservation of 50 per cent beds in medical colleges and private hospitals.

Bhopal, Mar 7: Independent MLA Surendra Singh Shera on Saturday said that he was not in any kind of captivity in Bengaluru and he will meet Chief Minister Kamal Nath soon.

"I was in Bengaluru for my daughter's medical treatment. I was not in any kind of captivity. I will meet CM Kamal Nath soon," Shera told reporters here upon returning to Bhopal from Bengaluru.

Earlier, Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh alleged that the BJP had escorted four Madhya Pradesh MLAs, including three from his party, to Bengaluru.

"Last night, two charter planes were booked by BJP to take MLAs to Bengaluru. One was a 9-seater plane while the other was 12-seater. In the 12-seater plane, four MLAs were taken to Bengaluru. Out of them, three Congress MLAs Bisahulal Singh, Raghuraj Kansana and Hardeep Dang and one Independent MLA Surendra Singh Shera," Singh had said.

He has accused BJP of resorting to horse-trading in order to bring down the Kamal Nath government.
