Six children drown during Ganesha Idol immersion in Karnataka’s Kolar

Bengaluru, Sept 10: In a shocking incident, six children lost their lives as they drowned during a Ganesha idol immersion in Maradaghatta village of Karnataka's Kolar district today.

Four boys and two girls — all aged between 7 and 12 — drowned on Tuesday evening during an immersion. Three bodies have been recovered so far and brought to KGF Hospital.

The children hailed from Maradagatti village in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) taluk of the district. The children were identified as Rakshitha, Tejaswi, Veena, Vyshnavi, Rohit and Dhanush.

However, Baithamangala police, under whose jurisdiction the taluk falls, said the children were out for a swim in Maradaghatta lake and had drowned.

Kolar Superintendent of Police Mohammed Sujitha is at the spot.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur. 

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman. 

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way. 

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment. 

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: Karnataka Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar on Friday announced to sanction 160 acres of land at Kenjar in the Taluk for setting up the Indian Coast Guard Academy.

The land was allotted from the land bank of Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

Mr Bhaskar made the announcement at the commissioning of the high-speed interceptor boat C-448 of the Indian Coast Guard at New Mangalore recently.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: Four people, including a minor and a teen-aged boy, have been arrested on charges of spreading false messages on social media with in Bantwal taluk of Dakshnina Kannada District.

Police said on Friday that the arrested have been identified as Siddik (27), K Mohammed (19), Hanif (25) and a 16-year-old boy.

They are accused of spreading false news on social media using different mobile numbers in Bantwal Taluk for disturbing communal harmony, police said adding a case had been registered at the Vitla police station in this connection.
