SM Krishna complains to Sonia, Rahul against Siddaramaiah

March 30, 2016

New Delhi, Mar 30: Senior Congress leader S M Krishna on Tuesday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi here, to present what was described as a candid' picture of the state of affairs in Karnataka under Siddaramaiah.

krishnaThe veteran leader conveyed to the party high command that things would be dangerously on the slide, if they went unchecked and correctives were not applied soon.

Krishna impressed upon the two top leaders about the scenario in the State on account of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's approach to issues, including the handling of the severe drought and more importantly, the “unwarranted” controversy caused by setting up the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), which will take over corruption cases being probed by the Lokayukta, Congress insiders said.

He reiterated the views of a large number of Congressmen that the move on ACB was a bad development'. He said that the Karnataka Lokayukta had earned a good reputation under some able Lokayuktas.

MLAs unhappy'

Krishna told Sonia and Rahul that many Congress MLAs were very unhappy with the drop in popularity of the State government in view of the controversies and perceived lack of good governance.

Setting up of the ACB was a unilateral decision of Siddaramaiah and he had not taken the party into confidence, Krishna is learnt to have told the party leaders.

The State is facing unprecedented drought this year and there is an impression that the administration is not focusing adequately to address the situation, he reportedly said.

While the chief minister's luxury watch row had embarrassed the party as well as the government, Siddaramaiah's defence on this issue was not convincing.

Krishna's interaction with the party high command was seen as an attempt to convey a “wake-up” signal from the State leaders over a growing political situation, which could be exploited by the opposition parties, particularly the BJP, ahead of the 2018 polls.

The former chief minister was worried that unless urgent corrective steps were taken, it would be difficult to stave off the possibility of dissidence, which could be exploited by BJP, like in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Chennai, July 25: A widow living alone in her apartment in Chennai city suburbs has filed a police complaint against ABVP national president Dr Subbiah Shanmugam, accusing him of harassment, including urinating and throwing used surgical masks at her doorstep.

Shockingly, no action has been taken so far by the police, even though the complaint against Dr Shanmugam, who is in government service, was filed on July 11 at the Adambakkam Police Station here by the widow’s relative Balaji Vijayaraghavan.

Dr Shanmugam and the 62-year-old widow were living in the same apartment complex in Nanganallur and an argument broke between them over a parking slot. “He wanted to use our parking lot. We agreed but demanded a nominal charge for using it. He was outraged by our demand and even broke our signboard at the parking lot,” Vijayaraghavan wrote in his complaint.

He also alleged that Dr Shanmugam began harassing her by throwing “pieces of chicken” outside her apartment despite knowing she is a vegetarian. Vijayaraghavan also alleged in his two-page written complaint that the ABVP National President had urinated outside the woman’s apartment gate and had been throwing garbage and used masks at her gate.

The 62-year-old woman has been living alone in her apartment for the last year following her husband’s death. In his complaint, Vijayaraghavan also said the family was “concerned about her safety”, while asking police to take action against Dr Shanmugam, who he says, “has a bad track record in maintaining rapport with neighbours.”

CCTV footage corroborates with the allegations of urinating outside the residence of the widow. However, the ABVP claimed the incident as a “malicious and derogatory propaganda” by the Congress’ student wing of NSUI.

Bengaluru, May 22: Karnataka Congress delegation met Chief Election Commissioner, Dr B Basavaraju in Bengaluru, urging him to guide Karnataka Government to conduct local body elections and not to allow State government to nominate their party men to the local bodies.

The delegation was led by Congress leader Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar.

"They (State government) wants to postpone the election, they have a lot of other provisions. We are demanding to protect the law, the government doesn't have the power to interfere in the system. We will not allow the state government to nominate their party men.

The CM and his entire team is responsible for this, they are killing the democracy and Panchayati Raj system of the State," said Shivakumar while speaking to the reporters.

The local body elections were scheduled to take place in the month of March or April, which were postponed in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

However, the date for conducting the local body elections has not been decided yet.
