SME wage compliance to rise to 80 percent by 2020: Saudi Labor Ministry

Jeddah, Mar 22: The Ministry of Labor and Social Development said its wage-management system will increase transparency and protect contractual relationships between workers and employers, adding that it expects compliance by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to reach 80 percent by 2020.

SMEThe ministry said the system aims to create an attractive and safe work environment, as it seeks to regulate the labor market and develop pathways to social development within the National Transformation Program (NTP) 2020 and Vision 2030.

The system achieves various benefits for stakeholders, including the release of payments agreed upon and without delay, the existence of reliable databases that regulate the market, the protection of labor parties’ rights, increased financial security and fewer disputes over wages.

Meanwhile, the ministry is monitoring if monthly wage payments are rigorously made to workers in the private sector, and enhancing the audit of wages in private companies in order to ensure their commitment to the paychecks of their workers.

The ministry said the initiative overcomes several challenges in the labor market, including low turnover of Saudis in the private sector compared to the public sector, lack of a wage-protection mechanism, lack of transparency among labor parties, weakness of monthly wage supervision in the private sector, and lack of tools that govern payments.

Beirut, Aug 7: A devastating explosion that destroyed much of Beirut might have been the result of a missile attack or bomb, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said, as the death toll from the blast rose to 154.

More than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate had been sitting in a port warehouse for six years, but there have been conflicting accounts about why Lebanese authorities decided to empty the shipment of explosive material. The vessel carrying the flammable cargo was heading from Georgia to Mozambique when it stopped in the Lebanese port to load up on iron, according to the ship’s captain.

By Friday, 19 suspects had been arrested and Lebanon’s former director general of customs Chafic Merhy had been questioned by military police.

May 21: Mosques across the UAE will remain closed during Eid Al Fitr, a top official has said. The Takbeer, which is chanted before the special prayers performed on Eid, will be broadcast from mosques 10 minutes before the prayer time.

During the virtual press briefing held on Wednesday, Dr Farida Al Hosani, official spokesperson of the UAE health sector, reminded citizens and expats about the importance of adhering to the safety measures as laid out by the authorities.

Contact tracing process

"Before we began to use Al Hosn app to trace the contacts of Covid-19 cases, the tracking process used to take more than 48 hours. It also depended on the memory and honesty of people. The app is an AI-enabled methodological way to trace individuals who came in contact with Covid-19 cases so that they are isolated. It has proven to be an efficient way to stop the spread of the coronavirus," Dr Farida said.

Install the app

She called on all the public to install the app on their smart phones. "The success of the tracing system via Al Hosn app relies on its use. We hope 50 to 70 per cent of people in the UAE instal and use the app in an effective way."

No sermon

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al Shamsi, Spokesperson for the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, said there will be no sermon for the Eid prayers.

He called on everyone to welcome Eid with joy and positivity and to stay connected with their loved ones via social media.

Mass testing

Dr Amna Al Dahhak Al Shamsi, the official spokesperson of the UAE Government, said mass testing continues across the country.

She stressed on the importance of adhering to precautionary measures and cooperating with the authorities.

Riyadh, Apr 25: Saudi Arabia announced nine deaths and 1,197 new cases of the COVID-19 virus on Saturday.

Of these cases, 120 were recorded in Madinah, 364 in Makkah, 271 in Jeddah, 170 in Riyadh and 43 in Dammam.

The number of people who had recovered from the coronavirus in the Kingdom increased to 2,214 after 165 patients were reported to have recovered.

A total of 136 people have died of the disease in the Kingdom so far.
