Smug cheat? No, I'm a silent assassin: Stuart Broad

November 21, 2013

Smug_cheatBrisbane, Nov 21: Stuart Broad said England felt like "silent assassins" over their understated Ashes build-up after he made his loudest critics eat their words with a memorable five-wicket haul on Thursday.

The paceman was dubbed a "smug Pommy cheat" by a local newspaper as the series got under way, over his decision not to walk during the last Ashes Tests, and was booed loudly by the Brisbane crowd.

But Broad let his bowling do the talking as he removed all four of Australia's top order and then broke up a dangerous rearguard partnership for first-day figures of five for 65 off 20 overs.

Afterwards, with Australia at 273 for eight at stumps, the beaming 27-year-old walked into the post-play press conference with a copy of the offending newspaper under his arm.

"I saw this outside (the press conference room) and it made me smile," he told reporters.

Broad said the tourists had come into the Ashes "under the radar", with all the attention on the Australian team and their predictions about what was in store for England.

"We've never focused on what the other team are doing, we've got a lot of experience in that dressing room and we almost felt a bit like silent assassins on this trip," he said.

"We were just going under the radar, all the attention had been on the Australians. That was perfect for us, it meant we could just get on with our business and get ready.

"Now we're in for the fight, you'll see our players stand up. It's a relief we've actually started the series quite well, we'd usually be under the eight ball by now so we're delighted in that changing room."

Broad said he took no extra motivation from the boos at the Gabba ground, where Australia are unbeaten in 25 years, calling it all "good banter".

"Good fun. It was something a bit different but I think I coped with it okay actually," he said. "It's all good banter.

"There's something about Ashes cricket that brings out the best in me. Playing against the Aussies, it means so much to me. I'm delighted with today's performance but looking to the future and obviously I want a lot more."

Broad revealed that in medical assessments he was among three players mentioned by the team psychologist who would thrive on getting abuse, along with Kevin Pietersen and Matt Prior.

"So they picked good men to go at and it's good fun," Broad said. "I wouldn't class it as one of my better five-fors from a bowling point of view, but I would say I would class it as my best from a scenario day and experience."

Broad said he was particularly delighted to get the wicket of Australian skipper Michael Clarke for the sixth time in eight innings.

Clarke looked uncomfortable against a planned short-pitched delivery and popped a gentle catch to Ian Bell at short leg for one.

"He's obviously their star man, averages over 50 in Test cricket so we know what a big player he is for them," said Broad.

"So I think you always have specific plans for their best players so to have two short legs in to get him caught short leg, was awesome.

"For the plan to work gives us as a whole team a lift, but as bowler to execute it, when you said you would, is obviously brilliant."

Bengaluru, Jun 4: Indian men's hockey team defender Harmanpreet Singh is delighted and honoured to be nominated for the Arjuna Award by Hockey India.

The Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal has been nominated for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award while her compatriots Vandana Katariya, Monika and Harmanpreet Singh have been nominated for the Arjuna Award.

"I was extremely delighted to hear the news. It's an honour to be nominated for the Arjuna Award and I am sure the nomination will motivate me to perform even better in the upcoming years. All of us have received tremendous support from Hockey India over the years and I was extremely happy to know that Rani has been nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Vandana Katariya and Monika have been nominated for the Arjuna Award. They have put up some brilliant performances in the recent past and I would like to extend my congratulations to them," Harmanpreet said.

The 24-year-old dragflick sensation stepped up his role in the team and shouldered the responsibility of vice-captain with aplomb. As a defender-dragflicker, he was instrumental in the team's winning performance in the FIH Series Finals in Odisha. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Test Event, he captained the team to victory in the absence of Manpreet Singh who was rested for the tournament.

Harmanpreet was also part of the Indian team that won the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers against Russia last year. Harmanpreet said that he has been able to perform for the team only because of the support he has received from his teammates.

"I am very happy with the way I have been contributing to the team in the last couple of years. However, I have been able to come up with the goods only because of the way my teammates have supported me. Hockey is a team sport and all of us ensure that we are contributing to the team's cause in some way or the other. If we score a goal, then it's not only the goal scorer, who takes the credit, but the entire team is credited for a particular effort," said the defender.

Harmanpreet added that booking a place in the Tokyo Olympic Games was the biggest achievement for the team in 2019.

"It was simply amazing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in front of our home crowd last year. I will cherish the memory forever. The balance of our side was fantastic and everyone chipped in to make the tournament a memorable one. Now, we will give everything we can to come up with great results at the Olympics next year. It's our sole target at the moment and all of us are up for the challenge. Hopefully, we will become a much better side once we play our first match in Tokyo," he said.

Jul 2: Cricket Australia has decided to not use the Dukes ball from this summer's Sheffield Shield, having used it alongside Kookaburra for four seasons.

CA has confirmed that the Kookaburra ball will be used for the entire 2020-21 first-class season.

Australia has been using Dukes ball since the 2016-17 season in Shield matches with an aim to help its cricketers prepare for the hostile English conditions.

CA's Head of Cricket Operations, Peter Roach, said the decision to axe the Dukes was the right call. "The introduction of the Dukes ball has been a worthwhile exercise, particularly in the lead up to overseas Ashes series where the Dukes is used so well by our English opponents," Roach said.

"We have been happy with how the ball has performed when used in Australian conditions over the past four seasons. We do, however, feel that reverting to one ball for 2020-21 will provide the consistent examination of our players over a full season that CA and the states are presently seeking. The Kookaburra is the ball used for international cricket in Australia and many parts of the world and we see benefits this season of maximising our use of it," he added.

Roach said the ineffectiveness of spinners in first-class cricket in recent times played a role in CA's decision to do away with the Dukes. "We have noted that spin bowlers in the Sheffield Shield have been playing less of a role in recent seasons, most notably in games when the Dukes ball is in use. We need spinners bowling in first-class cricket and we need our batters facing spin. We hope that the change to one ball will have a positive benefit here," he said.

The CA official, however, didn't rule out the possibility of re-introducing it later.

"We see a definite opportunity to reintroduce the Dukes ball at some stage in the future."

Bengaluru, Feb 25: India opening batsman KL Rahul will be available for Karnataka's Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Bengal at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on February 29.

Rahul had asked to be rested from Karnataka's quarter-final match but is now available for the climactic stages of the Ranji Trophy.

Karnataka had already been strengthened by the addition of Manish Pandey for the quarter-finals, with both Pandey and Rahul having returned from New Zealand after India completed the limited-overs leg of their tour, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Last year's finalists Saurashtra will take on Gujarat in the other semi-final at Rajkot. The other prominent players who will be part of the last four include Parthiv Patel (Gujarat), Jaydev Unadkat (Saurashtra) and Manoj Tiwary (Bengal).

Gujarat, Bengal, Karnataka, and Saurashtra had finished on top of the combined Groups A and B table, and all four progressed to the semi-finals after dominating their respective quarter-final matches.

Rahul has been phenomenal with the bat in the limited-overs series against Australia and New Zealand. He scored one century and four fifty-plus scores in his last ten innings in ODIs and T20Is combined
