Special 'abhisheka' by NRIs at Shravanabelagola on Feb 21, 22

Shravanabelagola, Jan 29: Vice president of the Non Resident Indian (NRI) Council Arathi Krishna said on Sunday that NRIs would be given an opportunity to take part in special 'abhishekas' during the Bahubali Mahamasthakabhisheka on February 21 and 22.

Mahamastakabhisheka, the anointing ceremony to the 57-foot tall monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali at Shravanabelagola, is performed once in 12 years. This year the event is being held from February 17 to 25.

Speaking to DH after visiting the temporary satellite towns under construction in the town on Sunday, she said already 200 NRIs belonging to Jain religion had registered their names with the NRI group. The members staying in Germany, Kenya, Dubai, Brazil, England, Indonesia and other countries will be visiting Shravanabelagola to be a part of the Mahamastakabhisheka.

The NRIs are expected to contribute for the development of Jain basadis and also for Prakrit language under 'Namma Ooru, Namma Naadu' scheme.

Over the past 10 years, NRIs have been extended an invitation to be a part of the 2018 festival. So, far 200 have registered their names and more are expected to visit the shrine during the month-long festival, she said.

The district administration has been requested to provide them air-conditioned accommodation near the satellite town identified for the police department, Arathi said.

Mangaluru, May 12: Two people hailing from Udupi district tested positive for covid-19 today. The sources of this infection is said to be Mangaluru's First Neuro Hospital.

Fresh bulletin from health and family welfare department revealed that a 52-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man from Karkala in Udupi were tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.

Among them, the woman had undergone treatment at the First Neuro Hospital. She is said to have contracted the infection from P-507 who was also was tested positive  April 27. And the youth was in touch with the woman.

The duo have not visited their home in Karkala for past few days. They were in quarantine and tested positive while being admitted at the same hospital.

With this the total number of COVID-19 cases found in Dakshina Kannada district are 33 now. Three among them have died and 14 have been discharged. Now, the district has 16 active coronavirus cases.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Karnataka on Tuesday reported its biggest single-day spike of 6,259 Covid-19 cases and 110 fresh deaths, taking the total infection count to 1,45,830 and the toll to 2,704, the health department said.

The day also saw a record 6,777 patients getting discharged after recovery, outnumbering the fresh cases. Out of 6,259 fresh cases, a total of 2,035 cases were from Bengaluru Urban district. The previous biggest single-day record was on July 30 when the state added 6,128 cases.

A bulletin from the department said cumulatively 1,45,830 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state and it included 2,704 deaths and 69,272 discharges. Out of the 73,846 active cases, as many as 73,212 patients were stable in isolation at designated hospitals while 634 in the intensive care units.

Among the fresh deaths, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 30 followed by Dakshina Kannada (13) and Mysuru (9).

Most of the people who succumbed either had a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI), the bulletin said. Besides Bengaluru Urban, the other districts which reported higher fresh cases on Tuesday are Mysuru 662, Kalaburagi 285, Ballari 284, Belagavi 263, Dakshina Kannada 225, Davangere 191, Dharwad and Hassan 188. Bengaluru Urban district continued to top the list of positive cases with a total of 63,033 infections, followed by Ballari 7,638 and Dakshina Kannada 6,388.

Among discharges too Bengaluru Urban tops the districts with 27,877 discharges, followed by Ballari 3,724 and Kalaburagi 3,470. A total of 14,89,016 samples had been tested so far, out of which 42,458 on Tuesday with 29,488 being rapid antigen tests.

Bengaluru, May 9: The bar owners in Karnataka, while welcoming the state government's decision to allow takeaway sales of liquor, said that the move is not going to benefit them much.

Venkatesh Babu, a Bengaluru-based bar owner said, "We welcome this move, our bar was closed for two months due to coronavirus crisis. We have been facing losses since then."

"The state government has told us to sell our stocks at maximum retail price (MRP). It is difficult for us to manage as the rent is high and we also have to pay salaries," he added.

The owner of Pingara Bar and Restaurant, Shivamogga said, "The government has said that is for parcel only and that too at MRP. There is no benefit to our business. We are only clearing the existing stock. They have given us time till May 17 and are not even giving us fresh stock. We are only allowed to sell what we have already."

Karnataka government in its Friday order allowed restaurants, pubs and bars to sell liquor at retail prices from May 9 till May 17, the day the third phase of lockdown is slated to end.

Earlier, the government had allowed the opening of liquor shops in order to mobilise revenue.

However, bars, pubs, restaurants were ordered to remain closed amid the COVID-19 lockdown.
