August 30, 2016

Bengaluru, Aug 30: After a long wait and several delays, a special court for speedy trial of cases pertaining to land encroachments will finally be inaugurated in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

landgrab

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Law Minister T?B?Jayachandra said the special court will be headed by retired High Court judge Justice H N Narayana. Retired district judges Rayappa Hanumanthappa Reddy and B Balakrishna will be judicial members. A premises for the court has been provided on the third floor of Kandaya Bhavan on KG Road.

The orders for establishing the court was issued on March 22. Chairman and members of the special court have a three-year term. The court is set up as per the provisions of Karnataka Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act, 2011 which provides for putting a curb on grabbing of government lands, including properties coming under Wakf or religious institutions, charitable endowments, local authorities or other statutory or non-statutory bodies owned, controlled or managed by government.

It has been a long journey for setting up of the special court. The Act which provides for setting up of the special court was passed by the state legislature in 2011. However, the bill was returned by the President, seeking clarifications. Then, there was a delay in finalising the location and staff for the court.

The special court has state-wide civil and criminal jurisdiction to complete trials within six months. Under the Act, punishment for land grabbing, is imprisonment not less than one year and up to three years and fine up to Rs 25,000.

Lake encroachments

A report being prepared by a legislature committee constituted to study lake encroachments in and around Bengaluru will be encyclopediac in nature and comprehensive, panel chairman K?B?Koliwad said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Koliwad, who is also the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, said the report which will be submitted by October end is likely to run into around 8,000 pages. Details of the quantum of encroachment of each of the 1,545 lakes surveyed in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts will be included in the report. It was left to the government to implement the recommendations, he said.

Koliwad said the government had done the right thing by taking up demolition and eviction drive to clear encroachments. The Speaker said he had directed Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike officials several months ago to clear encroachment on rajakaluves to prevent floods and water logging. “Bengaluru should not become like Chennai when it rains”, he said referring to the floods in the Tamil Nadu capital last year. However, his directions were ignored then, Koliwad added.

New Delhi, Aug 7: The Congress on Thursday demanded the removal of Karnataka minister KS Eshwarappa from the cabinet and his arrest for his statement that grand Krishna and Vishwanath temples would come up in Mathura and Kashi respectively after "liberating" them.

Mr Eshwarappa made the statement while reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the foundation of the Ram temple in Ayodhya yesterday.

"By asking kar sevaks (volunteers) to launch a similar campaign, the minister (Eshwarappa) is trying to disturb peace in the society," Congress Karnataka unit chief DK Shivakumar said at a press conference in Ballari today.

"Such people should be arrested immediately, police officials should register a case against him and the Chief Minister should remove him from the cabinet,"he said.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj minister Eshwarappa had said on Wednesday that he was of the firm opinion that "if not today, tomorrow, Mathura and Kashi temples will be liberated and grand temples would be built there."

"A place of devotion has to be built in both Kashi and Mathura. There too, grand temples have to be constructed. The mosques have to be removed from there," he said.

Mr Eshwarappa, a former BJP state president, said the centres of Hindu belief, Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura were a kind of a symbol of "slavery" as "temples of our Rama, Krishna and Vishwanath were destroyed and mosques built."

Stating that Mr Eshwarappa is not an individual but a minister who represents the government, Mr Shivakumar on Thursday sought to know from the Chief Minister whether this was his government's stand.

Hyderabad, Feb 28: The Cyber Crime Police of Hyderabad has registered an FIR against social media platforms- WhatsApp, Twitter and TikTok- for allowing people to spread anti-national activities, as per a complaint filed by one S Srishailam.

Raghuveer, Additional DCP Cyber Crimes said," We have received a court referred complaint, which was filed by S Srisailam in the concerned court stating that social media platforms Whatsapp, Twitter and TikTok are allowing few people to spread anti-national activities and videos."

S Srisailam also claimed that a few people are running a campaign against the CAA on social media platforms to spread hatred which in turn is causing damage to national integrity.

"In this regard, because the complaint was referred by a court a case has been registered against Whatsapp, Twitter & TikTok under the relevant section of Indian Penal Code and IT Act and took up the investigation," the DCP added.

He also added that the police cannot take action against these platforms as they are not banned in India but can initiate action against persons who intentionally indulge in spreading hatred.

"The police are conducting the investigation and if allegations of the complainant are found to be false then we will drop the case. We had received the case one week ago," informed the DCP.
