In spite of awareness drives, festival of lights continues to darken children’s lives

Bengaluru, Oct 20: This year too, dozens of people, a majority of them children, suffered eye injuries during Diwali celebrations, in spite of massive awareness drives about the ill-effects of firecrackers. However, compared to previous years, this year the number of people visiting hospital for firecracker-related eye injuries was a bit less. 

In Bengaluru city alone over three dozen people reportedly suffered eye injuries in two days. According to Dr K. Bhujang Shetty, chairman and MD, Narayana Nethralaya, the hospital came across 11 eye injury cases till Thursday. “Half of them are children,” Dr Shetty added. 

"Last year our hospital treated some 70 cases, but this year it is much less, but we are keeping our fingers crossed," he added.

Government-run Minto Eye Hospital has witnessed a few serious eye injury cases. "We have witnessed six-seven grievous cases in last couple of days involving blood clot in the eye because of firecrackers and all these cases needed to be addressed very soon and evaluated," said Dr Najeeha Feroz Torgal, fellow at Minto Hospital.

Rainbow hospital which had opened a helpline did receive calls of burns and accident. Dr Firoz Ahmad Torgal, Consultant, Emergency Medicine, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Yeshwanthpur said they did received one serious eye injury case, which was referred to Narayana Nethralaya. 

Doctors expect more cases to be reported in the coming days as celebrations are continuing in the city. “We usually get around 20 cases of eye injuries due to crackers after Diwali celebrations,” said Dr Ravi Dorairaj, medical director, Agarwal’s Eye Clinic.

He added that the hospital also receives a sizeable amount of cases with eye injuries following Diwali. Dr Ramesh K T, plastic surgeon, Victoria Hospital also said that minor burn cases increase during Diwali. 

Hospitals in other major cities of Karnataka including Mysuru, Hubballi, Belagavi also did report cases of firecracker-related eye injuries.

Haveri, Jan 16: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Wednesday hinted at inducting 16 MLAs into the Cabinet which was due for expansion despite the fact that it was a difficult task.

Participating in a function of Choudayya Community here, he further said one should understand the difficulty faced to undertake cabinet expansion in the prevailing situation and whoever gives suggestion should understand the circumstances otherwise the statements would lead to confusion among the community and people of the state.

He stated that 'as many as 17 MLAs resigned to make me Chief Minister and now their community people want their leader to become Minister, it is very difficult to satisfy all of them'.

Udupi, Jul 14: Abhijna Rao, a student of Vidyodaya PU College, Udupi, has emerged state topper in the science stream of II PUC. 

Abhijna has secured 596 marks in the II PUC examination-2020, the results of which were announced on Tuesday July 14. She scored a perfect 100 marks in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science (PCMC). In Sanskrit and English she scored 100 and 96 marks respectively.

She had secured second position in the Karnataka SSLC examinations two years ago.

She is daughter of Asha Rao and Vittal Rao, a retired professor. Her sister Raksha Rao has completed Engineering from NITK Suratkal.

“After securing second rank in the state in SSLC, my target was to score more in PUC examinations. My parents and lecturers have supported me in my studies. All my teachers gave me proper guidance. Vidyodaya College also supported me. I was studying on a daily basis. The exams were easy and I had expected to score above 590. I am very happy to score 596," she said.

Belagavi, Jun 25: Union Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi on Wednesday said that coronavirus was created to "scare us" and to create tensions on the border, in an apparent reference to China.

He said that everyone should learn to live with the virus and follow all norms needed to combat the disease.

"We all know who created the coronavirus. It was created to scare us and to create tensions on the border, we know who did it. We have to learn to live with the coronavirus. We do not need to be scared of it. We must maintain social distancing and follow all the sanitation norms," Angadi told reporters here.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 397 new COVID-19 positive cases, taking the total count in the state to 10,118.

According to the state health department, the state's death toll has reached 164 after 14 fatalities were reported. As many as 6,151 people have been discharged so far.
