New Delhi, October 3: Union coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal on Tuesday apologised for the derogatory comments he had made on women, but said he had been quoted out of context.

"I apologise if people are upset, but my comments were taken out of context," Jaiswal, also a Congress Lok Sabha member, told reporters.

He was reacting to criticism of his comments made during a poetry meet at K K Girls College in Kanpur Sunday night when he had likened "the joy of a new victory to a new marriage" and said "as the years go by, the celebrations like in a marriage become old".

Women's organisations have slammed his remarks as sexist and deplorable.

Cornered by reporters, Jaiswal said he was reacting after India's big T20 victory over Pakistan during the poetry meet.

"My remarks have been totally taken out of context. I was inaugurating a kavi sammelan when the news of the cricket victory came. The audience was in a celebratory mood, and I said that a fresh victory when celebrated is good, like a new marriage. In the same way, when a marriage becomes old, then the celebrations are not so much. However, my remarks were taken out of context," Jaiswal said.

National Commission of Women chairperson Mamta Sharma said: "What the coal minister said is very wrong. You cannot compare a woman to a victory. In a marriage as years go by, relations become stronger. He used wrong language for women and he should apologise," Sharma told IANS.

"We shall be writing to the prime minister and to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the issue," Sharma said.

However, she said the women's panel would not be issuing a notice to the minister.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said that "since the coal minister has already explained and apologised, the matter should rest there".

Jaiswal has been in the eye of a storm over the coal block allocations which the government auditor has faulted for allegedly causing massive loss to the exchequer.

Amaravati, Jan 21: Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu and at least 17 MLAs of his party were taken in police custody late on Monday as they tried to conduct a foot march from the state assembly to nearby Mandadam village in violation of prohibitory orders.

TDP leaders started off on the march after staging a sit-in near the assembly main entrance following the suspension of 17 MLAs from the House for the day.

They were protesting the AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Bill, 2020, that was passed by the assembly, enabling the establishment of three capitals for the state.

The TDP leaders were taken to the Mangalagiri police station.

Meanwhile, tensions prevailed at the Jana Sena Party headquarters at Mangalagiri as police prevented its president Pawan Kalyan from proceeding to the Amaravati region to speak to protesters fighting for the retention of only one capital for the state.

DIG Kanti Rana Tata and other senior police officials reached the Sena office and blocked the exit of Kalyan and political affairs committee chairman Nadendla Manohar, resulting in an argument.

Kalyan asked how could police impose restrictions within his own office.

Scores of Sena workers gathered outside the office even as a large posse of police was posted to thwart Kalyan and other leaders' plans.

New Delhi, May 23: India will try to restart a good percentage of international passenger flights before August, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Saturday, three days after announcing resumption of domestic flights from May 25.

All scheduled commercial passenger flights have been suspended in India since March 25 when the Modi government imposed a lockdown to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic.

"I am fully hopeful that before August or September, we will try to start a good percentage of international civil aviation operations, if not complete international operations," Puri said during a Facebook live session.

"I can't put a date on it (restarting international flights). But if somebody says can it be done by August or September, my response is why not earlier depending on what is the situation," he said.
