St. Aloysius College to hold seminar on advances in chemical sciences

Mangalore, January 21: The Department of Chemistry of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) will be organizing a two day national seminar on 'Recent Advances in Chemical Sciences' on January 23 and 24 at Eric Mathias Auditorium on the College premises, here.

Announcing this at a press meet here on Saturday Rev. Fr. Swebert D'Silva SJ, the principal of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) said “This is an attempt to bridge the knowledge gap by exposing the staff, Research Scholars and Post Graduate students of Chemistry to a fund of knowledge, directed by experts in the field.”

He said, Dr. BS Sherigara, former vice-chancellor, Kuvempu University, would inaugurate the programme and deliver the key note address on “Chemistry-Science of Life”.

He said, “The two days seminar is divided into seven sessions facilitated by eminent scientists and expert teachers from various institutes. These include Dr. S Kabilan, Professor in Organic Chemistry, Annamalai University, Dr. Michael Rajamathi, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, St. Joseph's College (Autonomous) Bangalore, Dr. INN Namboothiri, Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Bombay, Dr. SG Prapulla, Scientist, Fermentation Technology and Bio engineering CFTRI, Mysore, Dr. Nityananda Shetty, Professor, NITK Suratkal.

“The resource person will guide the participants in modern areas of Chemistry like 'Designing Organic Synthesis', Metal Mediated Coupling Reactions', 'Multinuclear and Multidimensional NMR', '2D Nanomaterials: Graphene and its Inorganic Cousins', 'Fuel Cells', 'Modern Theories of Coordination Complexes'.

“The valedictory programme will be held at 3:45pm on January 24 at Eric Mathias Auditorium. Dr. Cletus D'Souza, Professor and Chairman, Department of studies in Biochemistry, University of Mysore will be the Chief Guest, Rev Dr. Leo D'Souza SJ, Director, Laboratory of applied Biology, St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) will preside over the function”, he said.

Dr. Ivan Pinto, HOD of Chemistry, Dr. Richard Gonsalves, HOD PG Analytical Chemistry and Dr. Ronald Nazareth, Organizing Secretary were present in the press meet.

Bengaluru, April 3: Messages have been displayed outside mosques in Shivajinagar requesting people to offer Friday prayers at home during the lockdown imposed in the wake of the COVID-19 threat.

In light of the coronavirus outbreak, several Muslim organisations and mosques across various states have temporarily halted the congregational prayers.

The usually bustling Jama Masjid area, today, wore a deserted look.

One new positive case of COVID-19 was reported in Karnataka on Friday.

The patient is a 75-year-old man from Bagalkot and has been isolated at a designated hospital in Bagalkot, the state government said.

"Till date, 125 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the state, this includes three deaths and 11 discharges," it added.

The total number of coronavirus positive cases rose to 2301 in India on Friday, including 156 cured/discharged, 56 deaths and 1 migrated, as per the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Mysuru, Mar 3: Three leopard cubs were rescued by a team of Forest Department in Mysuru on Tuesday.

The cubs were found in a sugarcane field and came into notice of a farmer while cutting the sugarcane.

The villagers alerted the forest department which rescued the three cubs.

Bengaluru, Mar 26: In a second coronavirus related death in Karnataka, COVID-19 test results of a 75- year-old woman who had died on Wednesday has come out as positive, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said.

"I regret to inform that the COVID-19 test result has come out as positive for patient, who had succumbed to death yesterday. The govt stands committed to curb the spread of Corona Virus in the state. Please stay home, stay safe," Sudhakar tweeted on Thursday.

Health and Family Welfare Minister B Sriramulu too said the lab reports regarding the death on Wednesday have come and it has come out as positive, and death was due to COVID-19.

The exact cause of her death would be known only after the final report comes, both Minister had said on Wednesday.

The woman from Gauribidanur in Chikkaballapura district, had returned from Mecca in Saudi Arabia recently.

Sharing details about the woman, Sriramulu in a tweet on Wednesday had said, she died at Bowring hospital here at 1 am, and was suffering from diabetes, chest pain and hip fracture.

The patient was undergoing treatment in isolation ward at a hospital in Gauribidanur, later for more treatment she was shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases in Bengaluru, from where she was shifted to Bowring hospital on Tuesday," he had said.

This is the second coronavirus fatality in the state.

Earlier this month, a 76-year old Kalaburagi man died "due to co-morbidity and was also tested positive for COVID- 19", becoming the country's first coronavirus death.
