State govt to acquire 33 acres for Mangaluru Airport runway expansion

Bengaluru, Jun 10: The Karnataka government will take steps to acquire 33 acres around the Mangalore International Airport at Bajpe for extension of the runaway, Industries Minister R?V?Desphande informed the Legislative Council on Friday.

Replying to a query by Ganesh?Karnik (BJP), Desphande said the state government has written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation that the expenditure for the expansion will have to borne by Airports Authority of India (AAI) which operates it. The state government has already provided land for construction of a new terminal building.

Extension of the existing runway will help in meeting the critical mandatory requirement for safe landing of aircraft, the minister said.

Desphande said a meeting was held between Chief Secretary of Karnataka and Chairman of AAI on June 1 regarding the expansion and upgrade of the airport. The AAI?had provided four options but none of them was feasible as it required investments of Rs 4,000 crore.

It was decided that for the present, the runway extension programme will be taken up by acquiring 33 acres. At a later stage, a feasibility study will be taken up for an alternative site between Udupi and Mangaluru for development of a new airport.

The minister pointed out that the director, AAI, Mangalore airport, in his proposal had stated that Rs 1,120 crore will be required for the expansion of the airport. However, the AAI has not committed to bearing the cost.

Kochi, Mar 2: The Vatican has rejected the second appeal by Sister Lucy Kalappura -- one of the nuns who protested against rape accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal -- against her expulsion from Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC).

In her plea, she had demanded that her version be heard and her expulsion from FCC revoked.

She was expelled from FCC for participating in public protests demanding the arrest of Franco Mulakkal in the nun rape case.

''I got a letter from Vatican which says my appeal has been rejected. But the rest of the letter is written in the Latin language. So after I understand it, I will respond," Sister Lucy told news agency.

''The authorities are contemptuous of those who make such complaints. That is why the letter is written in Latin. Sister Lucy would continue her legal fight in the courts,'' said George Moolechalil, who has been authorised by Sister Lucy to communicate with the media on her behalf.

A petition of Sister Lucy is still pending at Mananthavady Munsif Court at Wayanad that demands that she should not be expelled from the convent where she is staying.

People should search for truth and follow it.

 

Example, the religion never told to remain unmarried for priests or nuns.

They go against its teaching inveting their own idea against God's teaching.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: Activist Irom Chanu Sharmila took part in a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) at Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall here on Sunday.

Sharmila, who came in the protest along with her child, took part in a 'burqa and bindi' protest marking the birth anniversary of social reformer Savitribai Phule.

Protests have erupted across the country over the CAA which grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Udupi, Aug 6: Three people including police personnel entered a well and rescued an elderly woman who had accidentally fallen into Udupi on Thursday.

A police sub-inspector and two others got down into a well and rescued the elderly woman, who accidentally fell into well at near her home at Kukkikatte.

The locals immediately alerted to police and fire and rescue personal.

Udupi town police sub-inspector Sadashiva Govroji, fire and rescue staff Vinayaka and a local Auto-driver Rajesh Nayak got into the well and brought the woman out safely.
