State honours given to Pejavar Seer

Udupi, Dec 29: Pejavara Mutt Seer Vishwesha Teertha Swami, who passed away today morning, was given state honours in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in Udupi city.

The mortal remains of Vishwesha Teertha Swami have reached Basavanagudi in Bengaluru for the last rites.

The mortal remains of Teertha Swami were kept for the public to pay final tributes in Bengaluru, before being cremated at the evening.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced three-day mourning from December 29-31, following the demise of Pejavara Mutt Seer.

The last rites of Teertha Swami will be performed at 7 pm today evening at Vidyapeeth, Udupi MLA K Raghupati Bhat said this morning.

"Pejavara Mutt Seer Vishwesha Teertha Swami ji passed away at 9:30 am today. His mortal remains will be kept at Ajjarakadu Mahatma Gandhi Maidan for three hours today, where he will be given state honours. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will also pay a visit," Bhat said while speaking to reporters here.

Pejavara Mutt Seer Vishwesha Teertha Swami passed away on Sunday. His demise was announced by Raghupati who stated that the revered saint breathed his last on Sunday morning.

Tabassum wins Mangaluru Press Club Award for service to HIV affected children

Mangaluru, Feb 19: Social worker Tabassum who has been rendering selfless service to HIV/AIDS affected children through her shelter home 'Snehadeep' at Bejai has been selected for the Annual Award of Mangaluru Press Club for the year 2019.

Tabassum, a resident of Konaje was chosen by a team of judges comprising Prof Balakrishna Gatti, Dr Vasanth Kumar Perla and Dr Nagaveni Manchi.

Kannadigas in UAE urge additional evacuation flights to Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 13: Kannadigas in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have sought additional flights to return to Karnataka during a video conference with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa here on Tuesday.

Noting that most of the ex-pats in UAE were from the coastal region, they urged the state government to ensure that most of these flights land in the Mangalore International Airport.

Many Kannadigas in the UAE were left unemployed due to the lockdown. “Many of them do not have the means to return to Karnataka and the state government should aid them,” representatives of various Kannadiga ex-pat groups urged the CM.

Yediyurappa said that the government has made all arrangements to bring back the ex-pats, and assured to fulfil all their demands.

CAA violates Constitution, reiterates Khader

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Congress MLA UT Khader on Wednesday slammed the Central government over the enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and said it violates the Constitution.

"The new citizenship amendment bill is unconstitutional. The citizenship cannot be given on cast and creed basis. Because of these things we are fighting against it," he said while speaking to media in Bengaluru.

Opposition along with several non-BJP state governments, including Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan have refused to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed NRC in their respective states.

The CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
