Stock markets tumble, rupee down; investors lose Rs 6 trn

November 9, 2016

Mumbai, Nov 9: Stock markets tumbled today with an estimated Rs 6 lakh crore getting wiped off from the invested wealth within seconds of opening trade as Sensex plunged 1,689 points on the US election trends showing lead for Donald Trump and the withdrawal of high-denomination notes worth billions.

share marketRupee also lost value, but gold appeared to be a gainer as an investment option with sovereign gold bonds and gold- linked Exchange Traded Funds gaining ground as key non-cash instruments.

The Sensex opened sharply lower at 26251.38 points this morning and moved further down within seconds to touch a low of 25902.45 points -- down 1,689 points from its previous close -- with all 30 stocks from the benchmark index trading deep in the red.

Buying at lower levels, however, helped the Sensex to recover some lost ground in late morning trade. It was down nearly 975 points at 1100 hours.

The overall investors' wealth, measured in terms of valuation of all listed stocks, was down by nearly Rs 6 lakh crore in early morning trade from nearly Rs 111.44 lakh crore at the end of yesterday's trade.

Stocks from real estate and other cash-focussed sectors were hit the worst, while the major losers in the Sensex pack were Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, Hero MotoCorp, ITC, TCS, HDFC, Bajaj Auto, M&M, Maruti and Tata Steel.

Gail, Cipla, ONGC, Wipro, SBI, Asian Paints, L&T, Sun Pharma, RIL, Axis Bank, Dr Reddy's and Infosys were also down sharply.

The rupee turmoil continued as it slumped further by 28 paise to 66.90 against the US dollar in morning deals on the government's sudden action to ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in order to curb black money.

The domestic currency opened lower at 66.70 as against yesterday's closing level of 66.62 per dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market. Soon, it spiralled downward further and languished between 66.90 and 66.70 during morning deals. It was quoting 66.90 at 1045 hrs.

Meanwhile, the dollar index dropped by 2.06 per cent at 95.91 against a basket of six currencies in the early trade.

Taking cues from global markets, spooked domestic investors indulged in across the spectrum sell-off including in secondline shares of midcap and small companies. All the indices pack led by realty, consumer durables, financials, banks, IT, auto, metal, healthcare, power and industrials languished in massive selling.

The Sensex was trading at 26,604.02 in late morning deals, showing a drop of 987.12 points, or 3.58 per cent, from its last close. The 50-share Nifty was also slumped by 319.35 points, or 3.74 per cent, to quote at 8,224.20.

Key frontline shares all fell led by Adani ports 6.29 per cent, Heromotoco 6.13 per cent, ICICI Bank 5.93 per cent, HDFC 5.00 per cent and TCS 4.83 per cent. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 86.66 crore yesterday, as per provisional data.

Overseas, Asian markets slumped in volatile trading as investors await the outcome of the US presidential election, with early results showing Donald Trump capturing several states.

In US, stocks finished in positive territory for a second straight day, as gains in the consumer goods, utilities and telecoms sectors led shares higher.

They said the agency has undertaken the action under the provision of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in pursuance of a mutual agreement between the two nations to combat financial crimes.

The over 60 bank accounts are held by some individuals and businessmen based in the country, they said.

The probe, they said, is linked to some high profile people of Brazil.

The suspected accounts sought to be frozen by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), on behalf of the Brazilian government, are stated to be of banks in Delhi and Mumbai, they added.

New Delhi, Apr 24: The death toll due to the novel coronavirus rose to 723 with 37 fatalities reported since Thursday evening, while the number of cases saw a record jump of 1,752 to go up to 23,452 cases on Friday, according to the Union health ministry.

The previous highest single day increase was on April 20 when 1,540 cases were reported.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 17,915 as 4,813 people were cured and discharged, and one patient migrated, the ministry said.

Thus, about 20.52 per cent of the cases have recovered so far, an official of the ministry said.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that 23,502 samples have been confirmed positive as on April 24 at 9 am.

The health ministry's figure of 23,452 cases include 77 foreign nationals.

A total of 37 deaths were reported since Thursday evening of which 14 fatalities were reported from Maharashtra, nine from Gujarat, three from Uttar Pradesh, two each from Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana and one from Karnataka, the ministry's data stated.

Of the 723 deaths, Maharashtra tops the tally with 283 fatalities, followed by Gujarat at 112, Madhya Pradesh at 83, Delhi at 50, Andhra Pradesh at 29, Rajasthan at 27 and Telengana at 26.

The death toll reached 24 in Uttar Pradesh, 20 in Tamil Nadu while Karantaka has reported 18 deaths.

Punjab has registered 16 deaths while West Bengal has reported 15 fatalities.

The disease has claimed five lives in Jammu and Kashmir, while Kerala, Jharkhand and Haryana have recorded three COVID-19 deaths each.

Bihar has reported two deaths, while Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Assam have reported one fatality each, according to the ministry data.

However, a news agency tally of the figures reported by various states as on Friday showed 23,577 cases and 743 deaths in the country.

There has been a lag in the Union health ministry figures, compared to the number of deaths announced by different states, which officials attribute to procedural delays in assigning the cases to individual states.

According to the ministry's data updated in the evening, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country are from Maharashtra at 6,430 followed by Gujarat at 2,624, Delhi at 2,376, Rajasthan at 1,964, Madhya Pradesh at 1,852 and Tamil Nadu at 1,683.

The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 1,604 in Uttar Pradesh, 984  in Telangana and 955 in Andhra Pradesh. The number of cases has risen to 514 in West Bengal, 448 in Kerala, 463 in Karnataka, 427 in Jammu and Kashmir,  277 in Punjab and 272 in Haryana.

Bihar has reported 176 coronavirus cases, while Odisha has 90 cases. Fifty-five people have been infected with the virus in Jharkhand and 47 in Uttarakhand. Himachal Pradesh has 40 cases, Chhattisgarh and Assam have registered 36 infections each so far.

Chandigarh has 27 COVID-19 cases, Andaman and Nicobar Islands 22 while  18 cases have been reported from Ladakh.

Meghalaya has reported 12 cases, and Goa and Puducherry have seven COVID-19 cases each.

Manipur and Tripura have two cases each, while Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh have reported a case each.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the ICMR," the ministry said on its website.

States wise distribution is subject to further verification and reconciliation, it said.

New Delhi, Mar 31: At least 24 people staying at Markaz building in Nizamuddin area of the national capital have tested positive for coronavirus, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday.

"All of them are being screened. We are not certain of the number but it is estimated that 1500-1700 people had assembled at the Markaz building. 1033 people have been evacuated so far - 334 of them have been sent to the hospital and 700 sent to quarantine centre. Total 24 positive cases have been found so far," he said while speaking to reporters here.

The minister also slammed the organisers of the religious event saying that they have committed a grave crime.

"The event's organisers committed a grave crime. Disaster Act and Contagious Diseases Act was enforced in Delhi, no assembly of more than 5 people was allowed. Still, they did this. I have written to Lieutenant Governor to take strict action against them. Delhi government has given an order to file an FIR against the organisers," the Health Minister said.

Earlier, the Delhi government had said: "It has come to our knowledge that administrators of Nizammuddin Markaz violated coronavirus lockdown conditions and now several positive cases have been found. Strong action would be taken against those in charge of this establishment. Delhi government will ask the police to register an FIR against Maulana of Markaz, Nizamuddin."
