Under the banner of Kana Nagarika Horata Samiti, the residents took out a protest march from Suratkal and converged in front of the main entrance of Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Limited.

Before reaching MRPL, the protesters stopped their padayatra' in front of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and BASF for some time to raise slogans against them.

Addressing the protesters near the main entrance of MRPL, Muneer Katipalla, the state president of Democratic Youth Federation of India, said that both the company and the civic body are trying to evade their responsibilities.

Criticising Mangaluru Mayor Harinath for his recent statement that he would join the protest against MRPL if it fails to take up the repair work, Mr Katipalla said that the former's responsibility is to govern and not to protest.

“Elected representatives should use their capacity and power to force the company to fulfil its responsibilities. If they cannot pressurise the company, they should tender resignations to their posts and then join the protesters,” he said.

Mr Katipalla said that both MRPL and MCC should stop drama and take necessary step to fix the road immediately. He said that the residents will intensify the protest against the company if it continues to exhibit its indifferent attitude.

Office bearers of the Samiti BK Imtiyaz, Naveen Poojary led the protest march. Hours after the protest Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner K G Jagadeesha paid a visit to Kana to inspect the road along with officers from MCC.

Chitradurga, Feb 10: President of the BJP State unit Nalin Kumar Kateel on Sunday hit out at Congress leader M. Mallikarjun Kharge for allegedly likening Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a “zero candle bulb”.

Mr. Kateel told reporters here that Mr. Modi was a “1,000 watt bulb that gave light to the world”, and compared Mr. Kharge to a lamp that had burned out politically.

Mr. Kateel charged that Mr. Kharge had become frustrated after losing the elections and after his party did not even consider him for a Rajya Sabha seat. And this had made the Congress leader to make wild charges against the Prime Minister.

Lashing out at the Congress, Mr. Kateel alleged that the Congress was continuing the “divide and rule” policy of the British and accused the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda of being the “other face of the Congress”.

Mr. Kateel also came down on the former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He ridiculed the Congress for the delay in choosing a new KPCC chief after Dinesh Gundu Rao submitted his resignation.

Mangaluru, Jan 29: Days after some youths allegedly threatened to 'behead' local MLA and former Karnataka minister U T Khader during a pro-CAA rally here, the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Congress on Wednesday urged the police to register a case against the culprits.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the youths raising slogans that they will "cut off his limbs and chop off his head if necessary" during the rally organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.

Addressing reporters here, District Congress Committee president Harish Kumar demanded that the police register a case on their own against the youths. He said if prompt action was not taken against the youths seen in the video, the Congress will launch an agitation before the office of the Commissioner of Police.

When asked by reporters about the video, Khader had on Tuesday brushed aside the threat, saying he had not taken it seriously. The MLA had also said he did not file a complaint with police as he had concern for the families of the youths.
