Bengaluru, Oct 1: BJP leader Jagadish Shettar has written to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to stop evicting Kannadiga families from Baina beach and rehabilitate those who have already been displaced due to demolition of their houses.
In his letter, copies of which were released to the press, Shettar stated that these Kannadigas have been living near the beach for the past four decades and are now being evicted by the local administration on the grounds that the land belongs to a church, which has sold it to a construction company.
“Most of the Kannadigas living near the beach are from Gadag, Bagalkot and Vijayapura districts, who had migrated to Goa to escape the recurring drought in North Karnataka. The demolition drive of the hutments has led to resentment in North Karnataka,” the letter states.
Shettar has stated that most of the residents are legitimate citizens of Goa and hold documents like ration cards, voters ID among others. The Goa government should stop the demolition of the structures in the interest of justice and to safeguard the interest of Kannadigas, Shettar stated.
