Stop playing politics over farmers: HDK tells Modi after latter calls him anti-farmer

Bengaluru, Mar 7: Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government of Karnataka an “enemy of farmers” on Wednesday, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy asked him to stop playing politics over farmers.

Addressing the farming community after presentation of the Krishi Pandit awards to progressive farmers at the Banquet Hall of the State Secretariat here, Mr. Kumaraswamy said Mr. Modi spoke volumes about farmers but his decisions were not implementable.

The Modi government has released only Rs. 415 crore against the State’s demand for Rs. 2,000 crore for tackling drought, he said. “Mr. Modi not only cut funds under MNREGA, but also denied promised funds under the scheme to the State,” the Chief Minister said.

On Mr. Modi’s allegations that the State government was doing injustice to farmers by not cooperating in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, Mr. Kumaraswamy pointed out that the State had waived crop loans amounting to Rs. 11,000 crore this year and Rs. 13,000 crore had been set aside for 2019-20. 

But the Union government has done no more than deposit Rs. 2,000 in the bank accounts of farmers, he said. Taking a dig at Mr. Modi, he said: “Politics should not come in the way of helping farmers to better their lives.”

Bengaluru, Jun 19: Congress leaders BK Hariprasad and Naseer Ahmed filed their nominations as party candidates for Legislative Council elections in Bengaluru and KPCC chief DK Shivakumar said that the two leaders have been given ticket to strengthen the party with their guidance.

"The Legislative Council means the Upper House and the Elders House. We have unanimously agreed to select and send these two senior leaders to discuss the party organization and various issues of the state in Legislative Council. There were plenty of aspirants to enter the Upper House. But it is decided to elect these two leaders and they will contest the election," Shivakumar said.

"We need seniority to guide us... That's the reason we are selecting these leaders... The high command has given these senior leaders the opportunity to discuss with all our leaders about strengthening the party," he added.

The elections are scheduled to be held on June 29.

Udupi, Jul 21: Sri Sugunendra Teertha Swami, the chief pontiff of Puthige Mutt, has tested positive for coronavirus. 

The pontiff got admitted into KMC Hospital Manipal last night and his treatment is in progress at the said hospital.

He was supposed to initiate his annual Chaturmasa Vruta at Padigaru Mutt on Tuesday.

According to sources, he was suffering from fever and hence he opted to get tested for covid-19. His health condition is said to be stable.

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday demanded that the state government drop its plan to provide doorstep delivery of liquor.

"After faltering in mopping up revenue, the state government is mulling over allowing doorstep delivery of liquor by enabling online sales and starting new MSIL liquor shops in rural areas. I demand that the state government drop its plans," he tweeted.

"I came to know that the excise commissioner is keen to hold talks with a private firm to enable online sale of liquor. The government should back out from such a foolish decision. Otherwise, agitation is inevitable," Kumaraswamy said.

He said opening new liquor shops or online delivery will ruin the health of society.

"Post-COVID outbreak and subsequent lockdown, people are facing financial distress, struggling to lead day-to-day life. 

The government must withdraw such an imprudent decision to deliver liquor at doorsteps. Opening new liquor shops or the decision of online delivery in times of distress like this will spoil society's health. 

It is not fair for the government to fill its coffers by robbing people's money," he said in a series of tweets.
