Bengaluru, Aug 28: The state BJP on Sunday commenced district-wise meetings of its units to deliberate on a plan of action to strengthen the party’s political activity at the grassroots ahead of the Assembly polls.

Members of the core committee headed by BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa will be present at each of the meetings which will go on for the next five days. The districts of Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Uttara Kannada and Udupi were covered on Sunday.

The meetings come close on the heels of party national president Amit Shah’s recent warning to state leaders that he expected visible progress in the party’s performance as well as improvement in its image in the coming weeks, failing which he will be forced to crack the whip.

Review meeting

Shah held a review meeting with core committee members in New Delhi on Saturday.

Prime on the agenda of the party is to strengthen booth-level committees and sort out differences, if any among district leaders.

The party has decided to take out “Nava Karnataka Parivartan Yatra” to expose the “misdeeds” of the Siddaramaiah government.

wwThe yatra will start on November 1 to coincide with Kannada Rajyotsava.

The BJP is planning six mega conventions in different parts of the state in the coming weeks. The party will also organise protests, dharnas, rallies, two-wheeler rallies, torch-light processions and silent processions against the government at the state, district and taluk levels.

Speaking at a party event in Bengaluru, Yeddyurappa said a large number of leaders from other parties will be joining the BJP three months ahead of the polls.

He said ticket has not been promised to anybody to contest the elections and it will be decided by Shah. Yeddyurappa said the party should strive to secure a thumping majority in the polls.

DKS ex-aide joins BJP

Earlier, Bengaluru unit Congress general secretary Varaprasad Reddy joined the BJP along with his supporters in presence of Yeddyurappa. Reddy was said to have been close to Energy Minister D K Shivakumar and his brother and Bangalore Rural MP D K Suresh. He recently fell out with them.

Bengaluru, May 19: In the wake of assurance by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to look into their demands, hotels and restaurants in Karnataka today decided to continue takeaway services for three more days.

Hotels were also exempted from the total lockdown on Sundays in Karnataka - under the state guidelines issued for Lockdown 4.0.

The Karnataka Pradesh Hotel and Restaurants' Association (KPHRA) had earlier threatened to stop takeaway services over refusal to allow dine-in facility in the fourth phase of the lockdown.

B Chandrashekar Hebbar, president of KPHRA said that the CM urged hoteliers to wait for three days, assuring that a decision will be taken.

"We appraised the government over the mounting losses by keeping just take-away services open. Noting that social distancing and other guidelines will be followed, we urged him to allow dine-in facility," he said.

The Association will wait three more days before discontinuing parcel services, Hebbar said.

The government also provided relaxation to hotels from the total lockdown announced in Karnataka on Sundays, he said.

A package for hotel employees such as cooks and waiters, along the lines of those announced for farmers, cab drivers and weavers, was also sought in a petition submitted to the chief minister.

In fact the state government had expressed its willingness to open hotels under the Lockdown 4.0, subject to restrictions. However, the central guidelines do not allow dine-in services.

Kochi/Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 7: The Managing Director of Muthoot Finance company was injured after miscreants allegedly pelted his car with stones here on Tuesday morning following which one person was reportedly taken into custody.

George Alexander Muthoot, who suffered head injury has been admitted to a private hospital, police said.

A section of employees have been agitating against the Muthoot management over dismissal of 160 staff from the company's 43 branches across the state in December.

The protest is being held under the aegis of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

While the Muthoot management alleged that "CITU goons" were behind the attack that occurred at around 9 am in front of IG office here, the union leaders have maintained that they have no role in the incident.

Reacting to the incident, Labour Minister T P Ramakrishnan said he does not think any of the Muthoot employees were behind the attack.

"The employees were protesting peacefully. Violence is not part of their protest. Even now, in today's incident, I don't think any of the Muthoot employees attacked the MD.

However, it was the management of the company which had always provoked them by not implementing the decisions taken at conciliatory meetings," the Minister said.

If the management was prepared to change its stance, all the issues would be resolved, he said.

CITU leader Ananthavattom Anandan told reporters that they do not believe in such type of violent mode of agitation.

An official of the Confederation of Indian Industries Kerala chapter condemned the incident, saying "it is a matter of great concern".

Well known businessman and founder chairman and CEO of V-Guard Industries, Kochouseph Chittilappilly condemned the attack and said it was unfortunate that such incidents still continue in the state.

“Earlier also such incidents have taken palace. It's highly condemnable. The union leaders will now claim that the incident took place without their knowledge. But without the backing of union, such incidents will never happen,” he said.

Kerala-headquartered Muthoot Finance is the largest gold financing company in India.
