Kasaragod, Mar 7: The police have arrested three persons, including a minor, on the charge of supplying ganja to a Class 10 student of a school here who was found dead four days after he had been reported missing from his house on March 1.

The highly decomposed body of Muhammad Jasir (15) was found in a drainage along the railway tracks at Kalanad, near Uduma, on Monday.

A team led by Bekal Circle Inspector V.K. Vishwambharan arrested Subeesh and Sameer, both aged 20, on the charge of possessing 250 gm of ganja.

They were arrested under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and remanded in judicial custody by the Hosdurg Judicial First Class Magistrate court at Kanhangad.

The third accused, a 17-year-old boy, was sent to a Juvenile Home near Paravanadukkam. The police, assisted by the forensic surgeon at the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital, confirmed that the boy was killed after he was knocked down by an express train on Thursday.

There were no marks of inflicted wounds on the boy’s body.

The police have taken urine samples from the boy’s body to ascertain whether he was under the influence of ganja at the time of death.

The boy was a student of Chattamchal Higher Secondary School. He had left home under the pretext of going to buy new clothes to wear for a send-off ceremony at the school.

A group of local people took out a march to the Bekal police station alleging that the boy was murdered by a vested group.

The agitators said that there were no signs on the body that indicated that the boy was hit by a train while walking along the tracks. A deliberate bid to eliminate him resulted in his murder, said his father who took part in the march.

Kalaburgi, May 27: Karnataka's Kalaburgi district recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, as per information provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In light of the increasing mercury levels, people here were seen consuming sugarcane juice and cold drinks to beat the heat. Animals and birds could also be seen searching for water for relief from the scorching sun.

Locals of the area requested the district administration to take necessary actions such as spraying water on roads, in order to bring down the temperatures.

"We are facing huge heat waves in this district from the past two days, and even the temperature is around 44 to 45 degrees on a daily basis. So, it is a very alarming situation in Kalaburgi. When we move around the city, we are unable to find water and fresh fruit juice, and even if fresh juice is available, we are afraid of getting infected by COVID-19," said one local.

"If we carry cold water, it gets warm within half an hour, and gets unfit for drinking, and it is tough for us. I request the district administration to look into this matter and do the needful such as spraying water on the roads, etc. for slightest relief," he added.

Hassan, Feb 9: Accusing the Centre for treating Karnataka as its enemy Former Minister and Congress leader UT Khader on Saturday said that the state did not get support from the Centre on the Mahadayi issue and flood relief and even the Union Budget.

Speaking to the media here, he said that the state has elected 25 BJP Lok Sabha members. Three from the state were Ministers in the Union Cabinet and another MP has been appointed president of the party’s state unit.

'None of them have spoken about the injustice done to the state in the budget. The budget document announced Rs 18,600 crore for the suburban railway in Bengaluru. But, ultimately the amount earmarked for the project is only Rs 1 crore. How can any BJP leader justify this?', the Congress leader wondered.
