Study on alternate commercial uses of areca needed'

Mangalore, April 25: An extensive study to figure out potential profit making alternatives of areca crop is necessary, said Tamil Selvan, Director, Directorate of Areca and Spices, Calicut.

Speaking after inaugurating a seminar on 'Choice of Fertilizers in Areca Farms' organized by Campco Ltd and Areca Research and Development Foundation, Mangalore, in the city on Wednesday, Mr. Selvan said that although arecanut is not injurious to health, the general perception is that since it is used as an ingredient in gutkhas, it is harmful for health and this perception had been hitting the areca business real bad. “Areca as such is not injurious to health. It is tobacco and other ingredients that go into gutkhas that are harmful. Governments are banning gutkhas and hence areca growers are facing problems. The real problem however is that so far a comprehensive study has not been made as to what other alternative means of using areca as a commercial commodity are available”, he said.

Mr. Selvan advised farmers to not depend on areca crop alone and adopt multi-crop system to avoid financial risks caused by marketing issues and also diseases such as 'kole roga'. “Prices are a major problem. 75% of the marketing is done by private parties and the farmers are not getting the retail price that they deserve”, he said, adding that during times when the farmers are concerned about protecting the crop from diseases, the chemical and fertilizer companies exploit them by hiking the prices.

Stating that expansion of cultivation area is not the solution, Mr. Selvan said that it is the increase in productivity using better technology that is more important. “Karnataka produces 2, 58,000 tonnes of areca over an area of 1.95 lakh hectares of land, almost half the areca produce of the country. The right technology and fertilizers will help in increasing productivity”, he said.

Mangaluru, Jan 9: A forest guard was arrested caught red-hand by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials while accepting Rs 3,000 bribe from a person for granting permission to cut Mahogany trees for his personal use, a statement said on Thursday.

According to the statement, the arrested identified as N Sudheer sought bribe of Rs 15,000 from Gopalakrishna Herale, a resident of Beltangady.

Mr Herale, in a complaint, lodged on January 7 said that he had sought a permit from the forest department for cutting of Mahogany trees purchased by him.

Bengaluru, Jul 6: Karnataka government has revised quarantine norms according to which those entering the State from other states, including from Maharashtra, shall be placed in 14-days home quarantine.

Until now, the state government had issued that those returning from Maharashtra are to be placed under 7-day institutional quarantine followed by 7-day home quarantine.

A fresh state government order with the subject line "Regulation of movement of persons from other States to Karnataka" reads: "Whereas the State Government vide Order dated June 30, issued unlock 2 guidelines which permit reopening of more activities in a calibrated manner, in areas outside the Containment Zones, and to extend lockdown in Containment Zone upto July 31. The guidelines also permit unrestricted interstate movement of persons and goods adhering to the SOPs/ Guidelines issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare and Department of Revenue (Disaster Management)".

Whereas, the Department of Health and Family Welfare issued revised SOP for the moment of persons from other State to Karnataka vide document dated June 8, this year, further, quarantine norms were modified vide Orders of even number dated June 15 and June 26.

"The quarantine norms are regularly reviewed and calibrated with the prevailing Unlock 2 guidelines and infusion of technology and community involvement to enforce the strict home quarantine. In light of the above, the quarantine norms issued vide Order dated June 26, has been further modified and is follows--Persons coming from other State to Karnataka, including Maharashtra shall be placed in 14-days Home Quarantine," the order read.

"The other conditions as specified in the Order dated June 15 and aforementioned SOP enclosed issued on June 8 by the Department of Health and Family Welfare shall continue to be in force until further orders," it added.

Bengaluru, July 31: Denying irregularities in covid-19 equipment purchase by the Karnataka government, the state unit of the BJP has issued legal notices to Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar demanding that they apologize or face a defamation suit. 

The notices seek a public apology for the allegations levelled against the government on irregularities in the procurement of Covid-19 equipment and supplies. 

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress president, have been doggedly pursuing allegations of corruption against the BJP government and have demanded a judicial inquiry. 

BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar said that while the Congress leaders claimed that Rs 4,157 crore was spent during Covid-19, they also allege that the government has not responded to any of the 20 letters written by them. "If the government has not provided any answer to the Opposition, where did they get the figures from," he said.

None of the allegations of corruption is specific and the statements made are factually incorrect. "These statements, without any basis, have been issued calculatedly to lower the image and damage the reputation of the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party, representatives of the party and the ministers in the government," the notice issued on behalf of Ravi Kumar read.
