Sudeep meets Karnataka CM seeking land for actor Vishnuvardhan's memorial

December 11, 2017

Bengaluru, Dec 11: Popular actor Sudeep met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah here on Monday and urged the State government to expedite the process of setting up a memorial dedicated to late Sandalwood actor Vishnuvardhan.

The meeting also gave rise to speculation that Sudeep may be considering taking a plunge into politics, a rumour that has been heard for sometime.

In a petition he submitted to the chief minister, Sudeep requested the government to grant one acre of land where a 'Dr Vishnuvardhan Punyabhumi' can be developed ahead of the legendary actor's eighth death anniversary on December 30. Vishnuvardhan, who died in 2009, was cremated at the Abhiman Studio in Uttarahalli.

The Karnataka High Court, in 2015, stayed a government order granting two acres of land for the construction of Vishnuvardhan's memorial at Abhiman Studio, based on a petition filed by the sons of late Kannada actor T N Balakrishna.

They argued that the government had granted 20 acres of land to Balakrishna for the construction of the Abhiman Studio in the 1970s.

"I request you to identify one acre of land where Dr Vishnuvardhan was cremated," Sudeep has stated in his petition to Siddaramaiah. "If government rules do not permit development of both a memorial and punyabhumi in the same place, the fans of Vishnuvardhan, including me, are willing to give in writing that we will take up the responsibility of development," Sudeep stated.

"If the government cannot suitably compensate the family of Balakrishna and buy the land, the fans of Vishnuvardhan may be allowed to buy it," Sudeep stated.

"You have given the state many bhagyas (schemes). By taking this request to its logical end, you can take credit for completing the memorial that was announced by the previous government and meet a long-pending demand of Vishnuvardhan fans," Sudeep stated.

The State government has already identified land for a Vishnuvardhan memorial in Mysuru, Sudeep pointed out. "But you are aware that it is the wish of Kannadigas and countless fans that a memorial should come up where Vishnuvardhan was laid to rest," Sudeep told Siddaramaiah.

He also stated that there will be no objection if a memorial comes up in Mysuru as per the wishes of Vishnuvardhan's wife Bharathi.

Mumbai, Aug 1: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has said that Sushant Singh Rajput case should not be politicised or used to create friction between Maharashtra and Bihar.

Amid the ongoing criticism faced by the Mumbai Police following an investigation into Rajput's death case, the Chief Minister stressed that Mumbai Police is not "inefficient" while appealing those who have any evidence in regard to the case to step forward.

"Mumbai Police is not inefficient. If anyone has any evidence they can bring it to us and we will interrogate and punish the guilty. Please do not use this case (Sushant Singh Rajput death case) as an excuse to create friction between Maharashtra and Bihar," Thackeray said on Friday.

"Bringing politics in the case is the most deplorable thing to do," he added.

Maharashtra government has filed a caveat before the Supreme Court in the Rajput's death case.

Earlier, Bihar government and Rajput's family have filed caveats in the top court seeking to challenge actor Rhea Chakraborty's petition that sought transfer of the FIR registered in Patna to Mumbai in the actor's death case.

"After Bihar government and Rajput's family filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, Maharashtra government has filed a caveat before the SC today to ensure that no order is passed in Rhea Chakraborty's petition case without hearing its (Maharashtra) side," said Sachin Patil, standing counsel for Maharashtra Government.

A caveat is a legal process, in which the party which had filed it before the concerned court, shall have to be heard definitely before the concerned court passes any order in future.

Bihar Police has sought the assistance of Mumbai police to probe the Sushant Singh Rajput case, Mumbai police Crime Branch officials told ANI. However, the Police are still considering their request.

Bihar Police team reached after an FIR was filed by late actor's father KK Singh against Chakraborty in Bihar under several sections including abetment of suicide.

Rajput was found dead in his Mumbai residence on June 14.

Mumbai, Jun 15: Maharashtra police's cyber department has asked people to refrain from circulating online pictures of the body of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found hanging in his apartment in Mumbai's Bandra area.

Terming it as a "disturbing trend", it warned that circulation of such pictures could attract legal action.

Rajput, 34, was found hanging in his apartment on Sunday, sending shockwaves rippling through the Hindi film industry and elsewhere.

Later, some people circulated pictures of the actor's body on social media platforms, following which the state police's cyber department said it was in "bad taste".

A disturbing trend has been observed on Social Media platforms by Maharashtra Cyber that pictures of deceased actor Sushant Singh Rajput are being circulated, which are disturbing and in bad taste," it tweeted late Sunday night.

"It is emphasised that circulation of such pictures is against legal guidelines and court directions, and are liable to invite legal action," it added.

Urging netizens to refrain from posting such photos, the cyber department said the pictures already circulated should be deleted henceforth.

"In the digital age, every piece of information we read or watch needs to be cross-checked, verified and we all have to be careful before believing or forwarding them," it said.

After the actor's death, police said no note was found at the spot.

Police sources also said they did not find any foul play in their initial investigation.
