Sufi singer Ibrahim Sutar, midwife Narasamma among 9 Padma awardees from Karnataka

As many as nine achievers from Karnataka figure on the list of those chosen for the prestigious Padma awards for 2018. Cue sports stalwart Pankaj Advani has been chosen for the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the country.

Eight persons have been chosen for Padma Shri. Rudrapatnam Brothers — R.N. Thyagarajan and R.N. Tharanathan, Ibrahim Sutar and R. Satynarayana have all been selected for the honour in the music category. The others are writer and film lyricist Doddarange Gowda (lyrics), Sitavva Jodatti from Belagavi (social work), midwife from Tumakuru Sulagitti Narasamma (social work), and Siddheshwara Swamiji (spiritualism).

Sufi singer

Known as Kannada Kabir, 77-year-old Sufi singer Ibrahim Sutar is famous for spreading social and communal harmony through his songs and bajanas for the last 40 years in Karnataka and neighbouring states.

Born at Mahalingapura in Mudhol taluk in Bagalkot district in 1940 in a poor family, Sutar set up Harmony Folk Music Mela (team of artists) in 1970.

He used funds collected at his performances and organised social welfare programmes including yoga sessions, set up water tanks in villages and built class rooms to government schools.

A weaver by profession, Sutar studied till Class 3. Sutar and his team members staged performances singing devotional songs in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi, Goa, Odisha and Rajasthan.

He is popular among masses in North Karnataka region for his spiritual discourses. He is married to Marembi and has three children.

1,500 deliveries in 70 years

The famous midwife from Tumakuru district Sulagatti Narasamma, 97, started performing traditional deliveries when she just a 16-year-old girl.

A resident of Krishnapura village of Pavagada taluk, Narasamma, has performed over 1,500 deliveries over the last 70 years, without failed evence once.

An illiterate Narasamma learnt midwifery from her grandmother Marigamma. She was married to Anjinappa, at the age of 12.

She performed traditional deliveries not only Karnataka, but also in neighbrouing Andhra Pradesh.

She also provides neonatal care for about nine days.

In 2013 she was chosen for a national award recognising her contribution to the women's health by performing out such a large number of deliveries among poor families in remote rural areas.

Such is her popularity that there are instances when people from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh have taken her to their villages for deliveries.

She is a recipient of Rajyotsava award. Tumkur university has conferred an honorary doctorate degree on her. A lesson on her life has been prescribed in Class 9th text book.

People in this Karnataka city boycott health survey mistaking it for NRC

Chamarajanagar, Jan 3: The residents of Galipura layout in Chamarajanagar city boycotted the annual Community Based Survey (CBS), conducted by the Health and Family Welfare department, mistaking it to be the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Majority of the residents in the layout belong to Muslim community. The people, who mistook CBS to the NRC survey, got into arguments with the Asha workers, who were given the responsibility of collecting information. They even tore the forms into pieces and vent their ire.

The Health Department conducts CBS every year in the urban areas and collects all details including Aadhaar number, residential address, details of family members, health problems and others.

Fifteen Asha workers were deputed for the survey in the layout. A few youths started questioning them alleging it to be an NRC survey and started arguing with them.
Tahsildar Mahesh, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr N C Ravi, with the help of Muslim leaders cleared the confusion. The community leaders assured of explaining it to the residents and extend cooperation to the survey.

Its not the fault of the residents. Sanghis are planning to approach citizins disguised as health workers and else to get details of residents. such trouble makers should be noted and handed over to police. Police should arrest such fake people and put in jail. such fake people are trying to terrify poors and collect money assuring to help them. So, please be careful.

Karnataka govt refixes rates for RT-PCR, Antigen testing

Bengaluru, Jul 24: Karnataka Government on Friday issued an order regarding the refixation of rates for RT-PCR testing and Rapid Antigen testing for private laboratories in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state induced Task Force Committee has revised the rate of RT-PCR testing to cost Rs 2,000 per test and Rapid Antigen testing for private samples to cost Rs 700 per sample.

Ceiling rate for private samples in private laboratories including screening test and confirmatory test is Rs 3,000 per test, read the order

The cost is inclusive of the price of Personal protective equipment (PPE) kit, stated the government in the order.

Karnataka has reported 5,007 new COVID-19 positive cases and 110 deaths on Friday.

The total number of cases stands at 85,870 including 52,791 active cases and 1,724 deaths, added the state Government.

Bengaluru top cop calls meeting of essential services representative at his office

Bengaluru, Mar 25: Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Wednesday called a meeting of online, e-commerce food, medicine, groceries or animal products delivery aggregators at his office in wake of situation arising out of lockdown imposed in the entire country due to coronavirus epidemic.

The Police Commissioner has appealed one representative from each agency to join him in the meeting at 7 pm.

"I have called a meeting of online, e-commerce food, medicine, groceries, vegetables/fruits or animal products delivery aggregators today at 7 pm at my office at Infantry Road, Bengaluru," said Rao.

"One representative from each agency may please come. We promise all cooperation, please come," he said.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday confirmed 539 positive cases of coronavirus in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.
